Karen Willenbrink-Johnsen & Martin Janecky - Heron

- Karen Willenbrink-Johnsen and her husband Jasen Johnsen created a new body of work for Karen's exhibition at Habatat Galleries in West Palm Beach, Florida, December, 2018. Karen and Jasen invited Martin Janecky and Chris Stenzel to come work with them in order to create some larger pieces.
In this instance, Martin is considered the Gaffer of the piece, even though the form and color techniques are all Karen's designs. This piece was about 7 hours work from start to finish, including making the hot-de-verre fusing which create the pattern on the surface of the sculpture.
An avid bird watcher, Karen based this sculpture on the herons which flourish in western Washington state.

A stunning creation, done by very good teamwork.. No wonder glass pieces like this are expensive..Well done guys..
Absolute legends!
The cracked pipe moment was an especially dramatic bit of improvisation.
Omg, welding the pipe mid-blow is one of the most insane things I’ve ever seen in my whole life 😂
I really like how glass sculpting is about team effort
Dear Karen, it truly is the most beautiful piece of glass I have ever seen! Thank you for sharing.
Got to love that weld! I took a class with Karen about ten years ago, one of the most memorable glass experiences I've had the privilege to have.
You glass artists are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FANTASTIC music they’re listening to
Wow, that emergency weld was insane !
I wonder how many glass shops are even equipped to do that.
Yea crazy lol
I'm in love with glass,so beautiful!
Hahaha 8:00 “you spin me right round baby right round” brilliant vision, execution, and teamplay
Holy Crap!!! That's gorgeous glass.
Wow that is incredible!
Ohh my god that is stunning!.. those colours are to die for... just simply beautiful
What a beautiful creation..I loved the way they patterned the glass and the way it looked so colourful afterwards 😀
i dont mean to be off topic but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account?
I was dumb forgot my password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me.
@Diego Calvin Instablaster :)
@Nova Terrance thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and Im trying it out atm.
I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Nova Terrance it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my ass!
@Diego Calvin you are welcome :)
SOOOO BEAUTIFUL~ Simplistic Shape Yet Amazing Pattern & Colors.
Wow. Those colors are absolutely beautiful, kinda reminds me of an opal
Now that's a workshop when you can just pull the welder out and right in the middle have an emergency and take care of it I just wish they could do this under cooler circumstances you guys are great
Beautiful work, must admit though don't quite get the wings
That is BAD-ASS
Watching the Craftsmanship and Process it took to create such a Beautiful Sculpture was AWESOME. NICE WORK LADY AND GENTLEMAN LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ON YOUR NEXT UNDERTAKING CANNOT WAIT
Awesome job👍
Incredible piece. Really cool glass.
A masterpiece of art !!!
I would like to say y'all have out done yourselves, yet I know there is more to come... amazing piece and process... welding a pipe with a piece on the end of it??? wtf... epic. Kudos
Many thanks. It was an amazing day, and I feel fortunate to have been there to capture it.
wonderful in every way: the video, the narration, martin's process, karen's process, the spontaneity of the weld, you are all so accomplished. amazing.
Thanks very much for your comments, Judy. It was a special day, and I'm fortunate that we were able to capture so much of it in video.
@@GregOwen-gmanonfire i can imagine how special it was...you caught it so well...both documenting and teaching. i was fortunate enough to work with karen as my gaffer when i was artist in residence at pilchuck in 2000 and 2001. it was an incredible experience...and work shepherded by the "angels" came out of it...a piece exploring the atomic blast at trinity and the next year one related to the holocaust. martin and i shared an apartment at corning in 2017 when we were there as artists-in-residence (i was collaborating with michael rogers)...it was a joy to watch martin at work each day. and a delight to spend time together. you have caught the hard work and the skill that martin lives in his glass.
Judy Tuwaletstiwa those are some wonderful experiences, thanks very much for sharing them here. I hope some day I can catch up with you in the hot shop while you are working.
@@GregOwen-gmanonfire thanks, greg. what eventually happened was that bullseye glass gave me an 18 month residency in 2012 at their santa fe resource center and i fell in love with kiln firing. i spent the whole residency making 6" sq. color samples, returning to color after over 20 years of working only in black/red/white (paint and natural fibers, not glass). so, dan schwoerer designed a large, bell lid kiln for me and my husband and eric whittemore built it. glass has become central to my art now.
i hope that you continue to make videos that both give the experience and teach...it is rare when a videographer can do both and make it seem so natural.
Judy Tuwaletstiwa that is high praise indeed. Thank you very much. I'll continue to strive for that balance in my videos.
amazing, beautiful, expertly made!
Unbelievable! So beautiful!
Beautiful piece. Great work, congrats.
I would cherish an opportunity to watch them live in action creating a piece! Amazing! Much love, Shelbie =)❤️
Stunning
You've outdone yourself Greg! Thank you for capturing and sharing these incredible people at work!
Many thanks, Jake! This is actually an edited version of a larger 50 minute video of this piece. I'm trying to figure out where to start posting these longer vids...
@@GregOwen-gmanonfire I can't wait to see it! Karen and Martin are fountains of knowledge, I love seeing every little subtle thing they do.
@@GregOwen-gmanonfire When you do, would you be sure to post links on these shorter ones, please?
What an amazing piece!
Love the music choice
Excellent video all around, but I have to say how refreshing it is to hear a narration that isn't afraid of going over viewers heads just a bit. Hitting the 'optimal challenge' (game theory) sweet spot isn't easy, nor is finding your audience. Beautifully executed!
Thank you for your insights. I used to emcee at Museum of Glass, so I hope to be able to relate to people off the street, as well as established glass lovers. It doesn't always work, but better to aim high and fail than just post fluff, in my opinion.
It is beautiful glass but it looks top heavy like it could fall over with the slightest touch. The bird could have been gracefull if the wings had been shaped more delicately, thinner and more eloquently done overall.
The only part of it that looks like a heron is it's head and beak.
Jason
to weld up a pipe with glass on the end of it.......
My hats off to You .........
Absolutely amazing!
Amazing work...
Absolutely stunning!
Beautiful and real art!
Beautiful work.
they also have good taste in music
What a great job. Masters at work
Молодцы👍👍👍
Woohohoooo!!!!!!!! Diz's wat we call fabulous.
I've got to get a gig like this. I draw a vague drawing, get someone with amazing skill and talent to make it a reality while I stand around and shout and curse, and when it's finished, I say "Yep, that's what I imagined."
You gotta do all the shitty work first before you can do something like that. He didnt just walk in and say "hey ill draw pictures and yell at you guys to do your job and youll pay me for it"
Wawa Weewa Looks like he's doing the shitty work now. Should just be doing it for himself.
Very cool Karen!
Beautiful art - congratulations
Amazing!!
I respect the craft, skill and art. These are amazing glasseworkers
However, imho that huge mass of a glass "wing" threw off the gracefulness and delicateness of the rest of the bird. A beautiful bird sculpture with this huge heavy looking clump of glass coming out of the top of it that didnt really fit the resr of the sculpture. It suggested a cactus far more than a birds wing.
yea I was hoping they were gonna separate it into 2 wings, they're also kind of oriented in the wrong direction, off 90 degrees from actual wings. Still looks very cool though
Ya and it looked very top heavy. One little nudge and it’s breaking into a million pieces
Magnifique travail !!!
Great team work!
Beautiful!
06:37 what an emergency handling! it is fantastic!
That was an exciting moment!
This is amazing 😙
Well this channel is super awesome.
Amazing
Out of force of habit when ever he was welding i covered my eyes
Impresionante , que trabajo felicitaciones de Argentina 🇦🇷 julio 2020 ..👏
martin is a beast!!!!!
Wonderful👍👍👍
EXCELENTE, SON GENIALES.
At 13:23 I thought it was gonna be a huge pterodactyl. From the start of the video up until 14:27 when they added the beak, it was pretty hard for me to imagine what they had in mind. Even the drawing at 1:24 didn't help me get it. 😅
Nevertheless, amazing work and result! 👍
Super!!!
Lol, did anyone else hear the guy in the background say 'it's like penis' at 09:35?
Elizabeth Verney lel
But does it though?
Yes😂😂or came to the comments to see of anyone heard it😂
I*
Yep!!
Beautiful work! But don't you need to protect your nose and mouth during the process?
You should but most glass blowers dont
Amazing work!!👍🏻.... would anyone know how much this piece sold for at all please??:)
OMG THOSE COLORS SO INCREDIBLE
BL comidasarrquipeñas
Fabulous
Am I the only one who can’t picture the top part being wings?
wheres the sound? i dont have any sound and my volume is all the way up
Awesome tracks playing, creative environment, you guys hiring??
I aspire to be as calm and collected as these guys are when they realize they need to stop and do some welding.
Нереально круто!
Do you think you could make a glass spoon or fork
How much will it cost to buy 1 of these????
Очуменный красавец!

Who else heard Tainted Love when they ran back to the room.
Is it only me tht thinks tht guys tattoos look like really well drawn sharpie tattoos
I got a Marco Pierre White feel here.
And that's not a bad thing.
Powdered glass.... Screw the heat, there's the really dangerous part !
That good
wow
Muito loko
some G funk vibe in the background
Класс
That guy has a serious focusface
Gorgeous glass. Distinct lack of personal safety equipment. Sorry, I'm not trolling , I was just a little distracted.
Very nice but those wings are not my style.
the wings look more like a peacock tail to me
