Its funny yet surprising cause yesterday i was just talking about this portrait effect with my brother and always amazed to see you guys being that creative ..
ePaper might be better for something like this than eInk. But always updating the screen takes to much power. Idk. Smart home devices with classic screens and tons of sensors might be better for this. Though currently google won’t display videos as screensaver. Most likely power and that it‘d be too attention grabbing
Great video! These techniques translate pretty well to other editors, but I gotta say this process looks painful compared to doing the same thing in Resolve.
A bit of a random comment I realize, but I can't wait to watch the first feature your team ends up putting out. I don't even care what it is. I'm in. Whenever that time comes, I'm in.
OMG. Ive seen this in person at Universal Florida. Haven watched this vid yet but wanted to ask if anyone knows what screens/techniques they use at the park to get the mat appearance. The newspapers and portraits waiting for the ride look really cool as an effect. I could have sworn I've even seen brush strokes for the portraits. I wouldn't be surprised if its like brushed-on mod podge. Even UA-camd ride vids just to see the effect again. Wanted to ask now because I'm never early enough to post this soon. If I ever find and answer, I'll be sure to post a reply. Thank in advance.
You're basically right, it's just a screen with multiple physical filters over it! It's explained more in-depth in this video at 3:50 ua-cam.com/video/BILzx7vkhLQ/v-deo.html
Awesome effect! Love how I always learn something new from you! Have been following you since the beginning and now I just finished the first semester in film school😁
I emailed and asked for this effect several years ago when I first subscribed. Love this In art school i had to use green screen effects using adobe premiere pro in a class. Your tutorials really helped me get through that course and in turn I'm now learning more editing for my own channel.
This looks great! I tried a really similar effect as a pickup for a short I made that's in post right now! The opening shot wasn't working so I decided to shoot a new intro with an empty frame and got the lead actress to send a photo to track into it! Wish I'd had this tutorial but it seems to be almost exactly what I did
Dude you guys should PLEASE PLEASE release more raw footage for people to edit just like you did back in 2009. No one releases good footage anymore. Also great video lol!
It would be cool to do this effect in a birthday card or another truly impossible location like the page of a book or newspaper. That way the tablet-feel would disappear and it would be a real mind bend.
Man, I'm following this so exactly but I my footage for appearing in my frame just wont follow my camera track for some reason.... I have no idea what I'm doing wrong haha
Will you guys ever show how to do some of your tips in other NLEs? I’d love to see this in DaVinci or FCPX. I’m just not sure on the best tracking solution…
Davinci has some good tracking tools. Not as robust as Mocha, but still very usable. FCPX on the other hand, as much as I love cutting in it, sucks in that department
you can add a transform effect and then add set matte using original photo size, and then move corner pin to the bottom. and set transform effect width value up to match aspect , and you dont have to precomp anything.
Film Riot is great... It's even better with Emily on screen. Her attitude onscreen just shines through. More Emily please. Maybe she could dismember Josh with a chainsaw or something. No offense Josh. Lol.
Its been awhile since the apparition tutorial. And I was hoping you could redo it with a camera move, and without using a motion control rig. I know how hard it is, but it would be awesome if you did it!
1:57 Hmm, Ryan's right, the animated-photo effect isn't as amusing or surprising anymore with digital picture-frames, let alone mobile phones and tablets. It was interesting as recent as 20 years ago, but it's over now. 😕 _Technology - Taking the magic out of life for over a century. Get yours today!_
Do anyone know how to make that Iconic Hogwarts Express rainy..atmosphere and that blue ice-cold sky and 😍dementors Also, curious what VFX software they might have used..any ideas guys ?
Has anyone else noticed that mocha & mocha pro seems to have lost its efficiency in tracking? It used to be so good felt like it could almost track air. I tried tracking log footage a few weeks ago for a photo frame replace & it wouldn’t stick so I added some contrast & converted the log to rec709 to give it the best chance & it STILL failed. I ended up just using 4 point corner pin track instead which was frustrating because mocha used to work like magic
Im doing this effect in my project, but It kinda doesnt work - when I try to apply export of my (moving) photo on mocha AE, it disappears. Does anyone know what could be wrong and how to fix it? please please
Ok, here's an added challenge to what you presented in this episode: try creating an animated oil-painting portrait, WITH DIMENSIONAL BRUSHSTROKES. This would be done using the already recorded footage of your performer, (Emily). And, yes, it CAN be done ENTIRELY inside After Effects, without the use of any 3d programs, such as Blender. Hint: a certain After Effects plug-in was made for a movie based on a story by Richard Matheson will go a long way toward creating the effect. It does not create dimensional brushstrokes though. And, you're not allowed to cheat by having Andrew Cramer figure it out for you!
Aaahhh how thoughtful and loving of her to do that. Clearly Josh is her favorite. I wish my sister cared like her.
Josh + Emily = best duo EVER! I want more!
every time i'm watching your episodes, i want to start working immediately! thanks!

That's hilarious. Hope this becomes a real technology some day. Maybe with e-ink.
They can do that now with digital frames. E-ink sucks for this type of thing

Did you really need to guess the aspect ratio of the frame? If it was a 5x7 frame, then the ratio is 5:7, right? You had it right in front of you.

Is this how they do the effect where the camera moves in front of a mirror but you can’t see the camera?
