The Story of LEGO’s Failed Barbie Theme

Barbie is this summer's smash hit, and naturally, many LEGO fans would love to see LEGO collaborate with Barbie on a wave of sets. Unfortunately, that day will never come, as Barbie's owned by Mattel- the same company that controls Mega. But that being said, it'd be wrong to ignore a LEGO theme that was present in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s- that being Scala : LEGO's Failed Barbie Theme

2:25 fun fact: this flower stem existed on system LEGO pieces for years after Scala declined, notably a modified 1x1 round plate as seen in 2001 Harry Potter all the way to early minifigure-based Minecraft sets (see fence posts and plant roots).

First off, I was shocked Scala commercials were even a thing. But yeah, that dog handling business definitely took me by surprise. I've seen this theme in passing before but I'd always write it off as just part of Belville, once I did more research into Belville though I learned this was a whole separate theme. Scala really clashed with Bellville in the late 90s. Scala in the late 70s took the friendship bracelet trend and made it look tacky imo. Glad Scala isn’t recognised nowadays because it’s just too weird

scala flower studs actually are somewhat compatible. they allow 2x2 Lego plates and studs to stick to the top and 1x1 round plates and 1x1 cylinders to stick onto the flowers. theted actually no scala anti studs but the bottom of acala pieces actually have normal anti studs
