Hey I guess Im leaning towards the dislike civil engineering side. Please note that I said civil and not structural engineering. I worked as a site/shop floor engineer for about 4 years in 3 different companies in Asia. And the hours were super loong. But the main problem that I faced was the politics and, should things go south, the finger pointing to blame people. From my visibility and opinions from a couple of friends, this work culture is prevalent in most civil engineering companies in the region. And this was reflected in the engineering offices too. Just wanted to rant. Feels good to blow off some steam.🙂
Im still a freshman so idk anything about working in actual industry. I am also a pretty pessimistic person and worried i might make a mistake in calculation of that sort that will cause an accident. Will that thing happen or am i just paranoid?
Dude Structural Analysis is a topic you will continually keep learning over not only your studies but career. I'm 9 years into professional work and still learning SA and finding new ways to apply advanced topics to the ever more complex projects I get to work on.
Searched “I love civil engineering” in efforts to combat my thoughts that I am not interested in this field, but already halfway through university for it. Thanks for the motivation to stick it out.
My friends got so annoyed because I was heavily involved in a bridge project in our town that we would drive by pretty frequently but I was just so excited about knowing what was going on inside of the structure
Engineering is a creative field, one that requires intense imagination and sometimes lots of sweat, blood and tears! Its can get really tough but yet, is super rewarding! As a mechanical Engineer, I love this video as its so relatable to my field! I'm planning to make a similar video on channel soon. Great video Mat, as always! Thanks for the inspiration :)
Reason #1 is to true. "Everything you ever wanted to know you learned in Statics and Mechanics of Materials." Over and over and over again my professor said this in every one of his advanced design class lectures. The more I practice, the more I realize how correct he was!
I am a Civil Structural Engineer and Project Manager for 15 years. Pandemic hit, the project on my office got low since last. So I do agree on what you say its transferable. Now I landed on a job to Manager a Hardware and Fabrication Company, I used my skill that I learn from more than a decade and apply it into the different industries that I am in now.
watching right now as a student 4th yr civil engineering specializing in structural engineering ill be back on this video when i get that license (God willing) .
Love your energy and point of view! Found myself nodding in agreement to most of these points, and I've been doing this for almost 3 decades. Wish UA-cam was a thing back then, and that I made videos talking about my work. That archive of what it was like would be amazing to have to review. Also...is it just me, or does every civil engineer find Statics to be the! hardest! while they're taking it but as soon as it's over and you revisit some of that in other classes, it's like the simplest thing ever and just clicks into place?
Mam! Just observe the worst scenario for Civil/Mechanical/Electrical in India. Civil Engineers are the poorest among all engineers. And the payscale downgrades them to the status of a mason.
Im structural engineer since 15 years,to me structural engineering is the art of simplifying things,to be successfull in structural engineering one should be very skillful in simplifying complex problems, people who find structural engineering difficult are those who dont have the talent of making things simple
Spending my Junior Year in civil engineering. Currently in Statics which is a bitch to learn ngl. It’s difficult plain and simple but the year just started so I’m not totally freaking out. Since I’m probably gonna be using it a lot after graduation.
I really love structural engineering and as a student will love to focus more it, buh still a little kind of scared bcus of the range of maths, buh I'm sure it'll be fun
Hey Mat! Great video! Really helpful for all the structural engineering students out there, just wanted to ask one question if you could answer that's be great. I have currently enrolled for a master's degree in structural engineering at California State University Northridge, first of all, since you're at California, what do you think about this university? Secondly and most importantly, do you need to gain experience as a site engineer in order to find a job in the structural engineering consultancy? Also, what types of internships would you recommend for structural engineering students?
I too am a civil structural engineer tried site engineering too but was shit nothing else just a day off in a month and during slab casting we we used to spend whole night
Hello Mat, i was wondering if you have any idea on what is the best laptop to use for structural engineer. I would really appreciate your response, thanks and keep posting this great videos!
Welp. I'm currently a third year student. I already finished taking up Mechanics of Materials but I feel like I didn't learn anything. The online class is ruining me. I can't focus on studying. We used to have group studies during face-to-face but now, I have to study on my own. So I ended up cheating on that subject on every opportunity there is. Well, on my defense, I didn't start cheating until after a month when I noticed that my classmates were just lax and copying answers from each other. I passed it with a 2.0 grade but I'm so disappointed with myself. How can I redeem myself? I'm trying to be optimistic abt this since this is the only subject I really cheated almost everything but I still don't know where to start. You know people don't change overnight. I still have that mentality to compare efforts with others but my inner anxiety is making my mind restless to make changes in me. I'm a competitive person and I get fueled by seeing other people work hard but due to pandemic, I don't feel any burning desire anymore.
I feel you. Although I am just starting on my prereqs at the community college, I also have absolutely no motivation due to this online environment. My gpa has been about 2.5 for the past few semesters (GE).
i love ur videos so much man. I wanted to ask u i just finished my bachelor in civil structural engineering and i want to start working. Any tips from u would be great!!
Thanks for the video! I want to know where do you think Ican learn the most and faster ? In the design office project management or in construction companies. Thanks for your return?
I’m a second year student in college right now majoring in civil engineering. Besides classes, what do you think I should focus on to further my career after I get my degree?
Good Afternoon Engr. Picardal, I'm Anton Joseph Mallorca, 1st year college student taking BSCE in National University - Laguna. We are assigned to look and interview a Structural Engineer, i would kindly like to ask for your help, thank you po!!

Hello Sir, i always watch your vids as a aspiring engineering student, by any chance can you tell us ( though its out of topic) what camera you used to record your videos?
Why do you love (or dislike) civil structural engineering?
Sir please make videos on software firms that develop structural engineering softwares
I think it's very risky job.
I make so many mistakes in calculation.
A small mistake in calculation can destroy things.
Thats why I worried
