  • Can game design straight out of the 90's still hold up today? We got a hold of the PS4 version of Yooka-Laylee and we're going to take a look as we eagerly await its Nintendo Switch release.

the Problem with Yooka laylee is that this the first banjo Kazooe esk game that didn't have Greg Mayles involved and it shows. You see every Banjo games has always been directed by Mayles. Sadly he was working on the Sea of Thieves.

I'm not a fan of having everything shown on the map. It makes all the collectable feel like a checklist and you don't get the satisfaction of discovery.

I disagree with your assertion that Nuts and Bolts sets out to be a Banjo-Threeie: it always felt to me like a spin-off that faced unfair expectations. That said, I agree with the thrust of your argument, and I think you're right that the Switch will prove a better environment for this game.
I think there's also a genre confusion contributing to the criticism of Yooka-Laylee. Colllectathon platformers occupy a weird middle ground both historically and structurally between the modern open-world game and the traditionally linear platformer. When these games are judged by the standards of linear platformers, they feel unstructured and aimless. if they are judged as open-world games, they seem lacking in scope both in size and variety of activity.

As a theatre manager, I have very little free time, and I'm lucky to get days off. The fact that I can't spend much time playing video games makes them all the more valuable to me, but even so, it seems the child in me won out because the collectathon enthralls me. It's a fun, colorful world to explore and relieves a lot of stress for me whereas games like Breath of the Wild and Mass Effect Andromeda can be overwhelming if I don't sit down with a goal in mind. Minecraft also relaxes me because your goal is what you make it to be. Currently, I own the PS4 version of Yooka-Laylee since I don't own an XBox or Switch, but because its world is so detailed, I feel like playing in handheld mode would really detract from the adventure. It's also much more comfortable to hold a more traditional style controller than the Joy Cons.

Amanda J. Adamson id argue that the switch is a perfect fit for the game .
i tried vita remote play, it sucks harder than just using a pair of joycons. the switch has amazing appeal to me and being unchained by my tv as wii u tethered a gamepad.
im able to combine my switch thinking were as the vita fell flat when its the same (something that Sony dont get, is that switch is a powerhouse as a hybrid console (but because it is able to swing 3rd party AAA games like Zelda) it feels natural to play zelda on switch in handheld mode, and having a table top mode is able to simultate the home console feel. albeit a small screen but The controllers feel comfortable as one controller (hands do cramp in handheld mode but still able to enjoy zelda)

basically, the vita lacks the l2 and l3 buttons but the joy cons have that in spades , a vita 2 is a issue because it will take from the Playstation 4 and 5 juggernaut. whereas the switch is a hybrid solution to the handheld ds line and wii line it folds both markets and produces console quality games and handheld titles on the go or can be docked to connect to the tv
Sony knows a vita 2 would not work, a unified library makes the switch double trouble.

Another name for collectothons is garbage collecting. Give us a real reason to collect items, such as upgrading a character. Locking levels behind collecting pages is like locking us out of levels with keys. Kinda feels like an old mechanic. Many modern games have clever obstacles you need to work through to progress, which feels more organic than reaching a certain number of items.

This was a great video. My intent with this game was to just to have fun and go for the platinum trophy, which is technically a goal. Since I had winter break, I spent a whole week playing, and I waited to play, so I see what you mean by not having enough time. Like when I first played Uncharted 4, I had school so I played like 2 hours a day, but that had direct goals. This game I just wouldn't do until I had limited time. But I absolutely loved the game. Stuidly, I think its one of the best I've ever played. Also, I've never played a single Banjo game and grew up with a PS1 and Crash Bandicoot.

I find Yooka Laylee as good game. Not excellent and there are few reasons why.
Pros: Character designs, some world designs (Tropics, Galleon Galaxy and Glacier look beautiful), soundtracks, bosses are very challenging and took more time to beat them unlike in Crash Bandicoot 2-3, Quack Quiz!.
Cons: Some worlds are bland and some are poorly designed (swamp world, Hivory Tower, Cashino - they tried their best, but they weren't that good), gibberish voices (annoying since Banjo Kazooie, sometimes you can't even skip them at all. Some of them are good to listen), Rextro Arcade minigames (some of them are hard to complete, takes multiple attempts. Up N' Nova is the example).
Overall it's good game, i completed it, collected everything before beating final boss and got Platinum trophy.
I hope the DLC will bring the new world in the game that'd be interesting to explore unlike Swamp, Hivory and Cashino worlds, but we don't know what'll be next.
Currently the robot (UFO easter egg) at Galleon Galaxy says 75%, it was 50% when 1.02 patch was on. It can be just a 64 skin unlocked at Tonics or new world. That's just my opinion, we don't know yet about it.
They said there will be DLC on Kickstarter.

I dont think its that collectethons don't work as well for modern audiences, or a matter of them taking too much time. I just found Yooka Laylee...unpolished and unsatisfying. Not even for any one big reason but rather for a lot of little reasons. Now that its out, play a bit of mario odyssey or hat in time and then a bit of yooka laylee and you'll see what I mean. Just moving around in those games is fun, Yooka Laylee just felt like it lacked confidence. I don't think its bad...its just not...very...good.

I never like collectathon games from the onset but I did not mind mario64. They appeal to a certain kind of gamer. the collectathon part should be inthe sidequests - not the main game.

I agree, pretty much up until the end. Personally, whether it's on a handheld or a console, I always like to have a goal I'm working towards. But I do think you're on to something: why people can love BotW so much but at the same time have such mediocre reception to Yooka Laylee, when they're both essentially open world games with an emphasis on exploration and "collecting." For me, I think the art style and direction of BotW will make the difference, as I'll want to explore just to admire the sheer beauty of the environments. But fundamentally, open-world games really aren't my thing, for mostly the same reasons you're describing. I think it's great BotW has such a vast world, but I would prefer a more objective and mission-driven quest, with 8 or 9 epic dungeons you can journey to with their specific location in mind, as opposed to 150 scattered mini-shrines and 900 (!) Korok puzzles that you can probably find mostly by sheer luck/accident, just happening to bump into one as you wander around the world. But this is probably turning into a rant so I"ll stop now, lol.

oh cmon. people grind mmos for hours. or all the multiplayer games like lol, dota 2 or overwatch. people have time, they are just lemmings and playing pubg, day z , h1z1 and all the other garbage.

    • @javiergimenez40

in those games you arent searching. you are grinding. the progression is constant. yo always see your numbers increasing. in a collectathon to see a number increassing first you have to find it and later on complete it.
Also, I have seen more people liking the game than reviews showing it. that leads me to believe that the people who like this grind fests arent reviewers. Or have you forgotten about when mad max game first came out?

    Interesting analysis.
I don't agree with this though: YL is well designed though and the collectathon just hasn't aged well.
Now at risk of appearing to view BK and BT through rose colored nostalgia glasses, I will say that the genre DOES need a few items to be updated to really succeed in 2017. However, for me BK was a masterpiece. Even playing it today as an adult, the feeling of wonder and liveliness while exploring is still with me (and that music, PERFECT!)
I think that YL did a lot well, but ultimately came up way short in too many basic gaming concepts to succeed. The opening area of the game is small and claustrophobic (vs BK's sprawling landscape with a clear ominous entrance into Gruntilda's lair). By contrast, YL's actual worlds aren't "too big", they are just EMPTY. Preexpanded worlds felt incomplete, which made world expanding feel like a stupid add-on feature. Perhaps they should have made more, smaller worlds. But that would require more variety which is a problem because there are only 4 enemy types in the entire game (1 with different skins and 1 only appears before the end). The mini games are a bit of a chore (arcade games sucked, but I must be the only person who liked the cart sections!). The characters look like life-like wax models with stiff movement, vs BK's chartoony and vibrant style (I prefer BK style). The music had the right spirit, but lacked actual memorable melodies (of which BK's I can sing to this day).
I could go on and on. But I think that they can improve all these things and make the second game way better! They are a talented team and they can succeed!
