- Roy Keane Rep of Ireland individual match clips vs Holland from September 1st 2001 during a World Cup Qualifier in Dublin Ireland. Keane was immense helping his team to a 1-0 victory despite playing for much of the game with a man less following a red card for Gary Kelly.

I remember reading somewhere that Van Gaal said this was probably the best performance by an individual player he had ever seen.... and that Keane had simply 'trampled' over his entire team.
yep, Van Gaal even voted for Keane for FIFA Player of the Year.
Van Gaal was also a fan of Kinsella in the first match.
When you look at the Dutch team on paper, they were packed with world class players. Ireland had no right to beat them. But Keane was the best player in the world at the time in my opinion.
That’s his job 🇮🇪
@@robertpirsig5011 no we had some world class players too. Was not aonce off, they got lucky 2-2 draw also. They could not handle quinn.
When Ireland had a Champions League winning captain in their midfield. Could you imagine uttering those words today or any time in the future??? I don't we appriciated some if the players we had then!!
A decent side, had a lot of players playing at good clubs. Now we are lucky if we can scrape together a team of championship rotation players.
Dont forget a player like duff. One of the best chelsea players in first mourinho years, and one of the finest wingers in europe at that time. He was simply brilliant.
Football is cyclical though. Ireland have overachieved got over 30 years now in spite of some squads lacking in genuine top talent. Even now they’re punching relatively speaking. And don’t forget a few years ago Wales were down in the doldrums even though they’d had great players previously and achieved nothing like what Ireland have and then came along Bale. You never know who might rise up in the next 10 yrs.
I'm a huge Roy Keane fan and I don't think his football intelligence and awareness get praised enough by fans (though plenty of players speak highly of him in this respect). He really takes the sting out of this game at times when the heat is on Ireland but at other moments he's rampaging around all over the place trying to make things happen. A very versatile and clever player who in the age of opta stats and detailed media coverage would be appreciated on a more technical level had he played nowadays. There's a match on UA-cam against Liverpool at Anfield where his passing is just flawless and he must have made nearly a hundred passes with only one that was misplaced. An immense player.
He was, for me, the best central midfielder of his generation.
I know the game you're talking about at Anfield and he absolutely schools Gerrard. But it was just another day's work for Roy. Ridiculously talented player. Always in space, available for the ball, never gave it away.
Dictated the game's tempo, had an engine unlike anybody else and a desire that was unmatched.
Popped up with more than a few important goals and was the only player back then that was able to put it up to the brilliant Zidane. (I don't say that lightly)
I miss him so much but what can you do?
Time moves on, unfortunately.
I'm so glad to be among people who actually acknowledge keane as a player. I'm an arsenal fan, but I'm just so baffled reading comments about keane nowadays, how he was just a tough man with no skills or football knowledge whatsoever. Those are just arrogant and naive people. Keane is a player I hated so much and admired so much at the same time. For me the best old school no. 6, defensive midfielder I've watched, alongside makelele, although personally I favourite keane. Yeah, he had that box to box ability in himself too, knew kow to make a late run, score, had a huge engine, but he usually played as "the" defensive midfielder in the team. He knew how to control a game, was highly intelligent and aware of his defensive and offensive impact and duties. Neat, accurate passer, very tidy and efficient on the ball, quick, mobile.. For me he was undoubtedly a world class player and a probably one of the best leaders in football, and biggest personalities in football I had the opportunity to watch. And admire. And hate :).
@@siberianTiger639 hes kne of the greatest players of all time.
@John Davies But it is the complete twat part that will win you a Champions' League and win titles! Does Kante have the drive to do what Keane did? We'll have to wait and see. He is a fantastic player though. I see him as a cross between Keane and Makelele.
I used to be guilty of this until i saw this channel. Just judged Roy as a hot headed passion merchant. His latter years when he sat deep and just passed it around. Beautiful passes between the lines, always found space to dictate play and very good feet when pressed. Top player
Roy Keane was and is my number one player. He commanded respect and he played his socks off. Man of true grit and honour. Thanks Roy for the memories.
I think this was Keane's best display. He was absolutely unbelievable. No bullshit, no show pony tricks, kept things simple, brilliant anticipation and awareness, immense fitness and drive, brilliant first touch, sensed danger....a truly, truly, world-class midfield player. The best of his type in that era. No wonder Manchester United did so well....Keane, Scholes, Giggs, Beckham; what a midfield. But Keane was the driving force, no question.
The Holland line up was immense.
Keane ran the show, an amazing performance.
People always talk about juventus 99, but they don't mention how brilliant Roy was here. One of the greatest performances of all time.... what a player.
Agreed and suffice to say I GUARANTEE Ireland would have no qualify without him, great great player!👍
@@jordan7326 Holland away, Portugal away, Portugal at home, Holland at home. MOTM performance in all of them. And away against Holland he was playing half-injured.
I think even with these highlights you can’t see how immense his off the ball play was aswell. You see his full value when you watch the whole match.
Roy Keane the greatest midfielder and captain of all time.
I eat lefties 4 breakfast No for anyone.
Keane wouldve been an asset to any team. He was an inspirational leader and the engine room of the team. He was always 100% dependable . and commanded alot of respect . Id dont think he was a great playmaker by any means but he would win the ball , break down the oppositions attack and give others the opportunities to create chances . He performed the basics extremely well without fancy footwork or showmanship. Incredible player !!
What a player and leader wish United had a player like him now
Lol Casemiro staking a claim
Pity we didnt get to see him at that world cup!!!!!! Great days though
We would had in 2002 if not for that incident
Jesus forgotten how immense and brilliant Keane was
Ireland played some great football those days. No fancy haircuts or tattoos. Just pride to wear the green shirt and hard work.
Yes i say the same, players now seem more interested in their tatoos and haircuts.
There really did know how to play soccer back then there shit now it’s all about the money
Ian Harte was Ireland’s best player
@Kengo XC Yes, he's been playing very average at best also.
They play for money now no loyalty at all just look at Declan rice 🇮🇪☘I always thought that green Jersey was to big for him anyways👍😜
This was on my 13th birthday. I remember it like it was yesterday. I’m a Liverpool fan but even before this game Keane was my hero. This cemented it.
Kliuvert moaning about a tackle like he didnt kill someone in his car.
This match & Juventus away for United in 99 were 2 of Keane's greatest ever performances.
The juve performance was so so, exaggerated because of the yellow.
McCarthy must’ve had some kind of respect for Roy Keane at the he runs a fair bit to go shake roys keanes hand 😂 and Roy just walks of like a boss after bossing the game
Watched this in a bar in Italy full of Dutch, my one memory was an old Irish couple dancing away at the final whistle singing ole ole ole ole 🤣 great memories
It was one off rep of Ireland 🇮🇪 best games. and it was so sad 😭 what happened to Roy keane in 2002 World Cup
He could control it, turn on it and pass it short. He just did those 3 things really well and he also had great running power and knew how to time a run into the box.
What a great day that was.....watched it on the big screen at Slane before the U2 gig
Wow!!!
One hell of a footballer!!!
Van Gaal called this the best individual performance he’d ever seen. Roy Keane got one vote for World Player of the Year in 2001 - from Louis Van Gaal.
"Ju tink Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink is eatin f'kin cheese sandwiches??!!"
Remember when it was fun and exciting to watch Ireland play?
I'm Irish and much prefer international football over club football so, I still watch all of Ireland games but, the last 10+ years has just slowly been down grading to just sheer embarrassment!
Jason , love or hate him, he was always giving 100%
What a player!
One of me favourite players ... but at the end of the day he walked out on us !!
Barry Callaghan He walked out on mediocrity, then came back. Whether or not he walked out the second time or was booted out remains unclear. I wasn't there. You weren't there. Only Keane and McCarthy know the truth.
Keepitonthedeck There's no doubt, when Keane focused on playing Football&competing sensibily-His ability spoke for itself..This was a Strong Dutch Team&Keane gave a World class display of how to play in Central Midfield..And then he went to Asia&was sent home like a Naughty Misbehaving Schoolboy!
Much better then Zidane at that point and greatest player in the world. Imagine how many ballon dors he would of got if he played for madrid or Barcelona! No other player ever has drove a team on to win so many trophies
We had 4 world class players , the 2 Keano's, Duff and Given. Remember this game well nail biting stuff, the old landsdown was a fortress back in them days
Steve Finnan & Iain Harte were also very talented full backs & Harte was a free kick artist to boot.
@@GholamFareed Team full of top 6 Premier league players, serious side back then. But look at that Dutch side who we stopped from getting to the world cup 😳😳😳
@@philbradshaw7650 Eire are now dire, sad state of affairs.
To be world class you've should be able to walk into any other club team in the world at that time, would Robbie Keane, Duff & Given walk into any team around that time 🤔
@@GholamFareed Yep Steve Finnan champions league winner with Liverpool and made the Premier League team of the year a couple of times. Mick stuck with Gary Kelly for too long...
No Irish footballer will be better than Roy Keane
I think this match, the 1996 FA final against Liverpool and his epic performance in Turin are his 3 of his absolute finest
Juve performance was so so, exaggerated because of the yellow.
@@richardjones3792Nah it looked simple enough but if you keep an eye on him through the whole thing he had Zidane mostly locked down during that game, and Zidane was like a ghost usually magicking himself into space everywhere
Saipan was such a shame especially for a small nation like Ireland when you have a smaller pick of world class talent. This team had already proved they could compete with truly world class teams like Portugal and Holland and if Keane had played in what turned out to be a truly odd world cup they could have easily had one of the runs that England just experienced given that so many top teams imploded early on. Keane guiding Ireand to a world cup final or semi would also have massively boosted his reputation given that he would probably have made team of the tournament. Unfortunately egos got in the way for both Mick and Roy, neither one is blameless and they were both great servants in their roles for the nation.
Mick is completely to blame!! Any good manager never treats his best player like that! And he's not even Irish
The thing I remember most about this match to do with Roy Keane is that we were up 1-0 and down to 10 men. We only needed the draw really and the rest of the Irish team were parking the bus with ten minutes to go. But Roy was up front harrying the Dutch defenders and nicking the ball off them in the Dutch half. No leaning back in defence for him, take the match to them.
Keane just listed this as possibly his best ever performance in his career along with a game against Italy
Football needs players like Roy Kean more than ever.
That Irish team that qualified for the 2002 world cup was very good. Robbie Keane, Shay Given, Damien Duff, Matt Holland, Steve Finnan, Ian Harte and Roy Keane were just awesome. Too bad Roy Keane had his issues and didn't play the world cup. They would have gone very far. They lost to Spain on penalties in the round of 16 but they should have actually gone very far.
Harte was never a decent player but was an ok Free kick taker
World Class, simple as. Head and shoulders above the rest of them that day. Between 98 and 03 he was imperious
Keane was superb that day. I had watched that game at the time and the tackle popped in to my head tonight as I was watching the Ireland game. No particular reason. What a will say imagine some of comings together in this game today, var frothing at the gash.
At that time someone who annoyed me was Matt Holland. Whenever Keane would be setting standards and being hard on the tackle telling people to get up and having a go at refs, Holland is a teachers pet uncle tom over telling Roy to stop it and calm down. Don’t know why it bugged me at the time but it did. That being said I’m no Irish and I don’t even bother with international fitba!!
Absolute legend of a man
Absolute Legend!
I wish keane was still playing 😢
Most if not all of the Irish team were playing at the top level in England. Compare that to what O’Neil and Keane were managing over the last number of years.
Indeed, ROI had a great selection of talented players in the early-mid 2000's... Roy and Robbie Keane, Ian Harte, Damien Duff, Shay Given, Steve Finnan and also solid, dependable players such as Matty Holland, Lee Carsley, Steve Staunton, Kevin Kilbane and Jason McAteer...
What a player and leader Super Captain R Keane
The quality that regularly set Roy Keane apart from the players around him was his understanding of spaces on the field.
His judgement on how to time the ball to fill the spaces was unique, instinctive, and virtually infallible.
Keane was a beast!🥰
This personal performance by Roy Keane (acceptedly, as part of a team of top class Premier League players) eclipses his personal performance for Manchester United in that famous Champions League semi final second leg in 1999.
Such a shame we were forced out as we would of won the world cup with Keane easy!
is there going to be another academy cup that you will cover many people liked them keep up the good work
KEANO !!!
Dont know why but atmosphere was better in Lansdowne
Fletcher said he had the best first touch in the whole of United, I believe that after seeing 6:12
How good was Keano
This looks like it's footage from the 70's
Ugh makes me sad. Really wished he stayed in saipan Ireland would've def made the quarters
In fact, would’ve made the final when you look at the run in through quarter and semi. Then, who knows….. Dreams 😁
The good old days 🇮🇪
Respect Keane the legend
Coldest handshake ever
Such an underrated passer an d tactician
Keane to Kilbane was the outlet
MASTERFUL
Fit man Roy Keane it’s very difficult to play soccer with that intensity,i think it would demand a lot of discipline and dedication
Does someone know what was actually the content of the conflict between McCarthy and Keane in Korea?
Played in England and to this day is arguably the best midfielder in premiership history but is rated way higher in Italy and Germany who have both won 4 world cups compared to England 1 fixed in 66.They hate to give it to the Irishman but the Gerrard lampard vieria all say he was brilliant especially the closest I've ever seen to keane in English football in Steven Gerrard.
Sadly, today he would have got 2 yellow cards and off for this performance
And well deserved... he was a reckless thug on the pitch at times.
TheWallethead disagree I think game has become like a bunch of fairies now.
It’s not rugby... that first tackle would warrant a red card.... nowhere near the ball and leaving the foot in tackling from behind...
Mark O Callaghan this isn’t a good example to link to this... that tackle has never been ok. I don’t think it’s gone soft... it’s supposed to protect players and their careers
Before the hotel was not good enough.........
From player of the match to quitter all in 3 years! He knew he was done.
It was clear from this match that Roy Keane would lead Ireland to the WC final in 2002
Keanoooooooooooo
At Manchester United he never had to beat people or anything flash but he could when needed
He was arguably better in the previous game against Portugal. Some player
11/10
maybe just maybe if mick mccarthy watched this before what ever happened in Saipan
Roy Keane gets a lot of crap his way
Simple he won this game
His best game for Ireland for me general
Vot is deese holland yu speek ov, it is called Netherlands!
That first tackle woulda been a red in todays game
Imagine being Mick, and letting this man leave your team?
It was in Japan, but I get your drift, best Irish footballer of all time, and possibly the best mid-fielder the world has ever seen. He would defo be on my all time best 11.
@Noggsy Joggsy I still believe to this day that if we had Roy we would have at least made the semis. We should have been Spain and I dont think that S Korea team would have had the beating of us.
Looked like the Dutch were on average 5 inches taller than the Irish! 😅
Must of drove Keane mad playing with those especially when some aren't real Irish as a person who lived in Ireland would say
Van Bommel was completely schooled by Keane. A humiliation
4:07 hon the Dunphy !
Height of his peak.
I really think he’s the best back to back CM ever. Dude was always so calm with the ball. Wasn’t the best creatively but fuck that dude was everywhere, tackled, and rarely lost the ball.
have you ever seen a better MD general in the premiership if you have your prob a pool fan end of
0:10 clear red card. That was already the moment i knew The Netherlands can’t win.
a yellow at the most.
That first tackle is at least a yellow. Roy Keane would last 5 minutes in today's game.
Ontheup that’s why today game is shit
Shame on mccarthy for throwing Roy under the bus during world cup.
Roy Keane what a performance, fai rte can shut up,
when u have 99 ability on fifa games
Roy Keane clattered Marc Overmars!!!!
you've come straight from Paul Howards assessment of the game
Leon Rifki White And Stam clattered Keane in the sequence leading to the goal
Roy Keane it's 3 points what are ye celebrating Bout.good man Roy.😂😂😂😂😂😂
One of the clips was keane passing the ball 3 yards to his right. Wtf. Who needs to see that.
A Ferrari in a garage full of Skodas
Pitch wasn't great, more like a carpark I'd say
when beautiful football met the Neanderthal...
lets be honest holland played on the day like s hit, keane should have sent off, good player keane was but do not say he was world class,he wasn t not by a long shot
alex zandberg shut up bellend a world class player is not someone with tricks and skill, he was a world class cm
@@phillipbodium893 I can name you 10 better
@@phillipbodium893 I make it better 10 Dutch midfielders who are and were better
He was world class though. He was a PFA winner. Finished in the Ballon D'or top 10 contenders. 3 times. Single handily tore apart a world class midfield of Zidane, Davids and Deschamp in one of the greatest CL performances ever in 99.
@@barryb90 world class i define people like pele maradonna cruijff beckenbauer messi ronaldo,i said keane was a good player and i would have liked him in my team, but world class????no fuckin way
This Dutch team might be the greatest team to never reach a world cup, only because they were beaten by a better side 😂😂😂😂
Roy you were never lucky, they were lucky to have you,a average player playing in a good side ,don't insult yourself, two teams did well to have you for so long,by the way that tash makes you look like Tom selleck.
The salt is impalpable. Keane is the greatest player Ireland has ever produced.
Laughing and smiling just before ko. This fraud should be more focused on the game
Van bommel was better this game
😂
That’s why it was a highlights reel of van bommel? lol I watched it at the time, Dutch massive favourites it was winner takes all. Roy Keane drove the team to the win, Ireland had Kelly (I think) sent off in second half and Keane still ran it. Mad take
