The shiney cups underneath the risers would benefit from a coat of black paint. You've wire wheeled all the protection off them and now they'll just rust.

BTW, my wife took my mother-in-law to the doctor’s office just yesterday and the diagnosis was that she needed her bottom yoke rebuilt. I borrowed my neighbor’s lathe and ground her down a bit, donned double gloves and packed her full of grease just like in your video. She’s good as new. No more wobble or squeak. I think tonight we’ll let her sleep in the garage again just to make sure there’s no leaks. Hope you both have a great week there- keep smiling!

Hello Del, bit of a tip for when you installed the bottom bearing same way I install wheel bearings run the outside of the old bearing on a grinding wheel and take off a few thou and they still work great but don't get stuck in the lip of the headstock \ wheel etc, I keep all the old ones ground down this way you never no, keep up the series this is really interesting
That lathe is amazing or better yet, watching you build enough tools to pay for itself a couple times over is amazing, This is what separate's you from the rest, along with your innovative skills. Way to work Del!

Sometime try using differential temperatures to slide interference-fit parts apart and together without galling. A friend and I in college replaced steering head bearings using a flame for heat and dry ice for cold, and drifts made from aluminum tubing and aluminum dowel on the physics department lathe. We machined the bearing races for a 0.001" interference fit, and by heating the outer part and cooling the inner part, we could slide a part in and out easily by tapping it with the machined tube or dowel. We had about 30 to 60 seconds to move the parts before they stuck in place. The force of threaded "bearing pullers" or pusher vices were not needed, and no galling occurred.
These are the sort of videos I really enjoy, mainly as I personally need to do exactly the same, well once I’ve finished the SSSA, suspension & Hub rebuild. Currently sourcing alternative bearings as triumph or wemoto do not stock them, however looking elsewhere at bearing manufacturers has ended up saving loads 👍🏼

Great vid Del, must agree with Steve Dennis about the cups being painted as the don't look stainless they could rust... Looking forward to the final result... 👍
The cup washers are zinc plated and the process of gently wheeling them off doesn't cut through the zinc, it just buffs it up and makes it shiney, done it many times and they don't rust, you have to grind a lot harder to wear through it, it's a good option for protecting metal... glad you've been enjoying the videos, loads more to come!

Hi Del, good work as usuall👍 Im sure you have heard this tip before, if you mig weld the old bearing race with high heat the race Will fall out on its own. I work as a fork lift mechanic and I use it when i change wheel bearings, and have a mig welder to use. Try it next time just for fun, you have the perfect tool already thou🤘

Hi Al, great to hear from you brother, decided to go with the gentle bearing press with this one, I could always tap them in, certainly the taper receiving cups, but the radial bearing just seemed more sensible to press in gently... take care of yourself and clan, keep in touch mate, D&Px

Get series Del, really enjoying it. When making a tool that you are going to impact on, it's best to make the surface that is to be impacted on slightly domed. This way you get a much more stable and even impact from the hammer.
Nice job Del , i bet most motorcycle dealers would not go to as much trouble .
Thanks mate, generally speaking the technicians I know would certainly take the time on installation of the bearings the same as I did, but this project is partly restoration and I've no time limit or constraints,... I do have sympathy for commercial technicians as they have a lot of boots up their ass every day, chasing them down to get things done... it's not a job I would want to do again!

make a 'known home' for your chuck key or . . . you'll be 'whangin' it fru da winda'.
For lathes do not care, if you are stood there, when start-up doth lobbeth it's key,
it should not BE there, but safe in it's lair, & it takes but a second to see . . . So . . .
'If the holster ain't full, don't hit the button, for a flying chuck key is a ricochet glutton, & while bouncing around will turn you to mutton, & that's not a nice thing to see . . .' (Must admit, impressed with that paint finish from rattle-cans. Have fun : ) xx

Thank you Graham, yeah just trying to matching things together, the bike's got a black engine, frame and swingarm, but the whole front end was silver and shiney, just stood out a little too much, so just balancing the overall styling, glad you're enjoying, still got plenty to do!!

Hi Alan, yeah, and have you seen the price of them now.. im really going to have to pull out all the stops for a top class finish on this one.. specially with the final paint... i saw a Bud Ekins replica Bonneville at the dealership last week... imagine a 900 Triple version.. ! food for thought aye.

Question though, how'd you find All Balls bearing and their products? I've heard they can be a bit dodgy as they're supposed to be Chinese

OK: your showing off you have a metal lath but you spent all your money and can't afford a bearing greaser . Thanks I'm looking for a 2% triple tree to replace the 4% one that came with my 03 V-rod as a winter project. And I have a 65 pan head motor on a rigid frame and I have a low mileage 2004 front end from an 04 Deuce that I can now put on it. Going from a cable drum brake to a disk brake could extend my life expectancy around here. This information should help me this winter. Now that we no longer have any adult step children or grand kids living in the house and taking up my work space. I'm retired for two years now and though I am busier than I expected in the spring summer and fall I will have time this winter. Thanks this information may come in very handy. Mike

You are so damn clever. Only thing I would need is just a little bit of voice over talking about your pulling tool and the tool you made from the scrap rod in your drawer to push out that ring from the headstock.
Hardly clever mate, it's only basic stuff, and it looks like you understood the screw press and the bent chisel without talk over, I try to let the demonstration make it clear, but feel free to ask if you're not sure mate.

Hi Dylan, this is the caliper I use, it's designed for use on electrical work, so has no metal parts, it's made from very hard composite material, it is accurate but does have a little flex in the jaws, so not to be relied on for precision work, for that I'd still use a metal caliper, but here's a link mate, and I love them, they do a great job for general measuring! www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/Wiha-Analogue-Calipers-Dialmax-ESD-31439?search=dial%20caliper&description=true

I want to do this over the winter but live in Western NY so cold and my garage is only
Insulated where it meets the house. Should I prep and do inside or temp not a problem?
If you're referring to installing bearings, then normal outside temperature is ok, but if you're referring to painting, then 15 centigrade is minimum, at least during and for an hour or so after the paintwork, so perhaps a heater in your garage whilst you're doing it!
What type of paint was that you used?

You've gone all posh in us with all the pulls etc for head stock used to be a hammer and a drift in the "old" garage but now all posh P.S.My head stock is possibly 50,000 miles old but I'm not touching it as I'm getting shot after xmas

I have a steering head bearings question. Do tapered steering head bearings have a different feel than when using OEM roller steering head bearings?
Not at all mate, if in good health and correctly adjusted, they will both feel the same.
@@Moonfleet41 ok thank you man. I have a Yamaha fjr1300es with 13 thousand miles on it and I recently had the oem bearings changed to tapered bearings and I have had a shop adjust the torque settings twice now. And the bike is sensitive to steering input especially at speeds above 55 mph. Is there any ways that the shop installed the bearings incorrectly or anything. I'm starting to get mad about all of this
@@marshall3498 The method of checking headstock bearing correctness is not riding it at speed, but actually a static check. If you can lift the front wheel, crouch down in front of the bike, and grab the bottom of both fork legs, turn the steering through it's full range of lock side to side, there must be no pinching or resistance, and no notch in the centre, it must glide smoothly lock to lock. Then pull the bottom of the fork legs towards you and away again, to check for any free play or float in the bearings... there should be none! If that is all good, it's not the bearings. Other things can affect your steering, tyre pressures, tyre condition, wheel bearings, rear wheel alignment! So perhaps check a few of those things too to make sure it's not something else that's wrong before you blame the shop!
@@Moonfleet41 ok thank you man very much. I have checked the tire air pressure several times. And the front wheel bearing and the tires have only about 1500 miles on them and the wheels are balanced and not bend either . I have no idea what the problem is now. The shop told me the torque settings on the bike are correct now.

Hello, I know you have mentioned this in a previous video, but what is the paint you use on the headstock? And secondly, where do you get the bearings from? I have a 1982 Yamaha Seca 650 and want to replace mine with a new and improved set
Hi Mark, the paint is Simoniz Tough Paint in Satin Black, and we got the bearings from Wemoto... they will certainly have bearings for your bike, and what a fabulous old muscle bike that is, be proud of it mate, they're getting rare now!

Just out of curiousity, I wonder if you could have "milled" the old risers to fit the new fat bars youre going to use. What would be the process, or what would be the things that make it not possibel? By the way, I really enjoy your attention to detail when you are doing these projects. You really seem to enjoy the process. Almost as if its a relaxing for you. I tend to get too impatient when im doing things like this. I need to learn to enjoy the process more.
Hi John, yes that would have been cool to mill them out, but its a much bigger hole to make, 22mm out to 28mm and there isn't enough metal on the factory castings for the bigger bar, and even the bolt holes are too close together... plus of course, more obviously, i don't have a milling machine.!!! and yes, it is relaxing to assemble things, take pride and enjoyment from each little item, and see the job as a long row of tiny projects, one component at a time, and not one single job... i spent many years as a mechanic on the clock and time constraints.. now i can take time and enjoy it..!

@@undrtkr26 Thanks buddy, yes a fat bar as referred to, is a motocross style bar that's 28mm at the centre in the clamp and as it curves out to the grips it tapers back down to 22mm, makes them stronger with zero flex and they look chunky as well.. you'll see. I'll get to them in a few video's time!

Great job though some of the tools you use may hinder some from attempting it themselves, I don't blame you for using them as it lets others on the next level know what tools are available and you probably did it in the past without them anyway so reference to that would be good.
It would be interesting to hear what the channel that does nothing has to say.
Incidentally, I'm not sure if you're aware he has thrown the gauntlet down to a build off with Alan Millyard. I doubt Alan Millyard will put his reputation at risk, lol, so I made it easy for him and suggested if he builds and finishes anything will be a challenge and will impress me. I await with bated breath. And I know this will get back to him but hey he hates me anyway and I wouldn't want it any other way.

What happened to your quick change toolpost?
I've never had one on this lathe mate, I was generously gifted one by a viewer, but it doesn't fit this machine, but it's saved for a day for, maybe, one day I get a larger lathe.
