Same here pal, though a few years behind you at 51. Software should serve, not impede. Software can be as complex as it needs to be, as long as it is well-written; then anyone at any level should be able to use it with ease.

New viewer, first commenter... played in rock bands for 30+ yrs and since the whole collapse of the so called traditional, or physical sales of music has dissolved, accepting lp collectors etc of course, and including the whole streaming thing, my real question is this....
HOW HAVE WE GONE FROM THERE TO WHERE WE ARE NOW, WHO GETS PAID FOR WHAT, AND WHERE DO YOU SEE THINGS HEADING??
Is there really a world where great songwriters/ musicians can move forward without the trad. 'Label' owning and controlling output,, I used to be in awe of the mighty dead moon and how they still made worldwide tours selling mono LPs recorded on the same press as the Kingsmen recorded and cut 'Louie Louie', and thier live shows were a religious experience as well as the devils' riffs, Fred howling like a banshee as he rocked toward his 70s...
I guess I wanna know yr take on the future of Rn'R,
and how the super- auto tuned pop we are having shoved down our thhrouats might be beaten. As we know,
Rock N' Roll will never die.
How do you see the survival plan for such an important social movement?
I hope the head injury and trail of disjointed text above has created some type of solid path of enquiry I have bn able to find the words to ask.
Where in general do you see the industry going?
      Chris

A lot of younger people think that browsing the web on their iPhone = using a computer. Hardly any of them actually knows how to use real productivity software. Somebody who makes a living from producing music and videos, is clearly somebody who knows how to use a computer. And what Rick said about Apple was true in 2017, and it's still true in 2021. They have become a company that makes devices for content consumption, not content production. Why? Because it's more profit for less work. Apple has become irrelevant as anything but a "lifestyle" brand.

@@ThekiBoran You could call it socialism if you want to, in the same way that I could call you a giraffe if I want to. Doesn't make it true. Fascism does not fit into easy left-right categories. It has heavy, authoritarian government control on the one hand (which points left) but that is in service to powerful corporate interests and nationalist (which points right).
The point here, being made well, was that Apple presents a brand image to appeal to those who claim to value 'progressive' causes (which include income equality and social provision) while pursuing solidly 'regressive' causes (naked profit grab, exploitative working conditions, tax avoidance etc) as a company.

Exactly how willing is anyone who must obey the "socialist program" of, for example, a highway speed limit? Usually willing, sometimes grudgingly, occasionally not at all willing. Then they get ticketed to deter them from the cost they might impose on society by destroying lives and property with their reckless driving. That recklessness is narcissistic and a bit sociopathic.
The fact is that ALL social programs exist for the benefit overall of society but cannot of course please or satisfy or fill every member of society's needs. That's the nature of society. You don't get to be an island in which every one of your needs is constantly fulfilled, by mommy or daddy or the government or corporations or your neighbors or your family.

The Problem with apple is that ever since the first iphone came out, their company has gone in a different philosophical direction. They want everything to be on lease to them. Their itunes music for example, you don't really own it, you're renting it. The ipod update from a year or two ago where apple went into people's ipods and removed anything that wasn't in an itunes format, should have been down right illegal. But their agreements point out that they're taking certain privileges with their hardware too. Any time you are to create an iphone application, it has to be submitted to apple for their approval. If it is deemed 'unfit' for the store because of subject matter or quality, then it can be dismissed.

Oneness100 unfortunately, there are a lot of classical CDs out there that are not available on most streaming services and may not ever make it to them. My point being that you could wait a lifetime for the streaming services to catch up to housing all of that missing information. It has the potential to be N Factorial when you think about all of the special editions, EPs, demo tapes, B Sides. My point is life it too short to limit yourself to just one platform for getting all of your music. Seek it out wherever it is. UA-cam has been my primary way of learning about new music.

I'm young, and I've wanted to jump ship from Apple to Samsung for YEARS. Needless to say, pretty much my whole family made the jump. And I've seen iSheep from many ages. It has to do with the mind. But I have seen so many people around my age pretty much indoctrinated into Apple. Hell, my first glimpse into something being WRONG with the company was when I first got my fist phone, which was an iPhone 3gs. Within a year, it started acting up, battery couldn't hold a charge, overheating, AppStore wouldn't work. My next phone was an iPhone 5s. This is when I noticed the pattern, looked it up, and lo and behold, it really is an Apple problem. Within a year and a half of me owning that phone, it too started overheating, battery couldn't hold a charge, constantly spamming me with "Enter your Apple ID" even though I had entered it CORRECTLY five times in a row, and the slowness. Some apps won't even work anymore, even though they came with the phone such as Pages; whenever I try to change a font, the whole thing just crashes. After I came to my family with my problem, they had problems with their iPhones too. Sooo... we all jumped ship to Samsung, and its been almost two years. My phone's battery works just as well, bluetooth is considerably stronger, better features, and still has a headphone jack. My biggest problem is definitely the planned obsolescence... and it hit a whole new level of low; they're planning on further breaking older iPhones that don't have a certain update, so its break you phone either way, or boycott Apple altogether. This company needs to change for it's own sake, otherwise, more and more people will jump ship. Most of my friends, former avid Apple users jumped. And the only ones who haven't have iPhones their parents bought them and don't want to feel mean. Hell, my girlfriend wanted to jump ship for years as well, but her parents, the iSheep that they are keep shoving Apple down her throat.

Dude, ru kidding me? Your channel maybe saved my life. After seeing how you detailed what Boston was, which I never knew, that is was this guy who had a vision of sound, and by combining and creating tech in his basement, mixed to come up with that famous unforgettable stuff. Watching more videos, etc. Then sitting down at a "donated to me" old grand piano sitting in the corner of the house, with a broken sound board, out of tune, etc...and cranking out full grand piano versions of some of these iconic tunes, I'll have to thank you because this grey haired old guy's (you describing yourself) videos have given me something else to feel really good about. All the keyboard videos you have done (reminding me of guys like rick wakeman, to start) had my brain during sleep listening and performing different things. Must have been up for a few extra hours last night rolling over stuff and having stuff come out of my hands that I hadn't done before, especially with the left hand, technical stuff I hadnt' done before.
So I have to say thanks. I don't know where this leads, but music and learning how to manipulate licks, sounds and combine them in me went to a whole new level from your videos. I'm coming to believe that the vibes we get from playing music move through us and affect our organs and brain in powerful ways. So when we are looking for a sound that feels great, when we get it out of our imagination and into a sound making device, we are giving ourselves what we need. It can energize us if needed, heal organs in our body if needed, and synchronize our body/brain in important ways. Im sure everyone else knows all of this and more, but me realizing it for the first time. Anyway, thanks for your awesome videos.

Do I need a better computer? PC or Mac? Is my interface fast enough? How many freakin' microphones do I need to cover all my needs? Right on the money Rick. I'm amazed when I walk into a meeting at the tech company that I work at, and guys try to connect their MacBook Airs to the video system in the room, have to bring out a mess of adapters, then spend 5 minutes trying to figure out how to make the video go to the projector. I walk into the same room, plug in my Win10 laptop to the HDMI cord and it works with no hiccups, no adapters, no problem. The only guys I've seen legitimately use Macs to their real benefit is graphical artists. Those high-end Macs make hi-res photo editing and video editing more efficient, mostly because of the software. My music machine is a high-end PC. I built it myself, and it really smokes. I can run a bajillion concurrent VST FX/Instruments on it with really low latency. If it breaks, I can fix it very easily. It took me like an hour to build, with half of that time just unpackaging the elements. I've never understood Mac fanboy-ism. I'm also an old guy with a lot of white hair and I have no problem with 2020 tech.

There was a time when it was the exact reverse. Plug and Play was originally an Apple concept. All my Windoze friends had to download drivers with every new dongle. I just opened the box, took out the iThing (in the days before the iPrefix), and connected it to the mac. It worked. Now you need a PhD to work out how to connect anything to anything else.

I'm thinking of purchasing one of those pro PC audio/video machines from Sweetwater. I've heard they kick ass and unlike Apple computers, they come rack mountable so you don't have to purchase those expensive special boxes or rack ears. (another ridiculous expense that even most of us gear-heads tend to forget about) But I'm wondering if would be cheaper to just build something myself. (I think you can get rack-mountable computer cases these days) Any advice would be appreciated!

If you have the technical chops, go for it in the true spirit of DIY independence. From a money point of view, you won't really save much, and buying a known good configuration with a warranty is a good option. Don't spend $5000 on a tricked out iMac Pro when you get the same performance in-studio on a good Windows PC. Do some homework, find out what the pros use.

    • @jacquelinewaters9558

I say build it yourself, it's not like it is difficult. You can choose the components you want based on your budget, doing so will net you a computer that is easily 3x better than any off the shelf computer you can find. Say you find a system that specs out the same as your custom rig, ok now look at the capacitors, mosfets, diodes and the like..a company like Dell is going to trim off every possible cent in manufacturing cost resulting in a far inferior machine than if you just built it yourself with quality components.

The focus is on paywalls and ad inundation in the software.. it's ugly and stupid to use. The beauty in Apple came from the effort to design FOR the user, now the user must retrain themselves to work the programs. That is BAD DESIGN.

Hi Rick I once worked for Apple in the 90's here in Colorado and I can tell you that man you are right on target. I have the old Quadra 650 models and a couple older ones. When I went to the Apple store and asked about upgrading anything they just looked at me like I was from outer space. The customer service lady said " oh you can't " and my reply was why would I pay $6000.00 for a computer I can not upgrade when your are always upgrading everything every 6 months. She said " oh we can do it for you" I told her I worked for Apple and on other computers for a very long time and I think I am capable. She said " well the user can not upgrade it now only techs can upgrade it." I told her have a nice day and left the store. Yes they have become crap and I tell everyone never ever buy a mac if you want to have a computer that you can upgrade yourself. The money hungry corporation has no interest in if your satisfied it got your money and that is all that counts.

+Joseph Murphy I'm not sure what you wanted to upgrade. But in general the mid-90s Quardras and Powermacs where very easy to upgrade. Opening them up and changing Ram or even upgrading the processor was no problem at all. And it was all user replaceable. What you said definitely does not apply to the systems Apple made back in those days. Things changed with the iMac and later machines though.

This means that you must TRANSCODE the video IN THE PHONE when moving it out of the phone. So now moving 60-80 videos out of your phone and onto a hard drive for pro editing takes several hours. If you import into the photo app it is faster... but then moving them out of THAT app takes several hours. Yeah, that's the funny thing about those that have the courage to look over the wall of the little Apple garden. It's an alien concept to a lot of them... choices. With Apple, you get what Apple thinks is important, when they think it's important. Usually, it's a feature that has already existed on several Android-based phones. If you look at Android phones (which many Apple users don't, because they aren't Apple), there are a ton of phones from different manufacturers with different features. Android phone makers have to compete with one another, as well as with Apple, so they innovate and they diversify. No single phone is perfect for everyone, so you get to choose what phone makes the most sense to get the features you want, need, or are actually going to use. Apple's perspective is... "Well, we'll give them choice... We'll have two screen sizes and a few colors".
Apple's planned obsolescence is smart for them. Charge too much (what the hipster traffic will bear), glue and solder everything together, including the cover, so you can't replace battery, add SD memory, etc... keep changing connector types to sell more dongles and adapters, and squeeze developers by taking a third of their sales. As long as there are people who are too afraid (or locked-in) to look over the walls of the garden, they'll keep parting with too much of their money and stupidly shunning anything that wasn't produced at the Church of Apple, Inc.

the lack of the 35mm jack is a step backward until we have the technology for long distance, contactless wireless charging that doesn't kill you (instantly or in months)
when the iphone 7 came out, apple used the word "wireless" to advertise the first iphone packed with an extra adapter (wire), without wireless charging.
more ironic, when an apple event starts with talking about protecting the environment, then they announce their new pro product that you have to completely replace if you want more ram. i'm not talking about replaceable cpu, gpu or such. i'm talking about adding 1 or 2 more years of usable lifetime for an electronic machine "made for professional users" by a company that "protects the environment".
pricing a product based on it's storage is a simple mathematically calculated decision of a company. it has nothing to do with the way of innovation, so it's offtopic.
i'm not a native english speaker and this is the first time i saw the word "greedy". let me try to use this word in some sentences to practice...
      - a company that sells a phone with fast charging capability without a fast charger is greedy.
      - a company that sells their "pro" notebook and their flagship phone without a cable to connect them is greedy.
      - apple is greedy
people should stop watching EverythingApplePro. smoke weed instead. it will also make you think you know what you are talking about but it only lasts for a few hours.

All my FireWire devices became incompatible and the poor quality adapters are unreliable - in with you in the build my own device! For the record, for 20 years I’ve been producing music on a self built Windows XP SP1 computer with a RME Hammerfall light pipe PCI card installed - and running Nuendo 1.6! it’s still running perfectly well and is an incredible sounding multitrack solution. Thank you Bob Clearmountain for pointing this out years back! I have RME converters and some Apogee. VST1 plug-ins work, and I only use a handful of them in any case.
