I am trying to escape NYC after 25 years and am absolutely shocked at how overpriced everything is even in the dumpy areas way way way out from NYC. There is no cheap area to go to. People keep saying "move somewhere else" but I cannot find anywhere remotely affordable, even if it's under an airport 100 miles away. Way worse than people who haven't been looking know
I think stuff is expensive because there is less oil
NYer all my life. Still work In the city but commute now. It’s a sh@t hole! The stuff I see daily is disgusting and it’s gotten worse over the last 2 years. As far as expensive, Hell yeah!
You’re out in the suburbs where everyone is killing themselves with opioids - YEAH SOUNDS GREAT
A bunch of boomers, who know DAMN WELL that nyc is waaaayy safer than what was going on in nyc in the 80s & 90s
You just got old and bitter and allowed yourself to be brainwashed online

When you have an unsafe, unclean, overpriced environment, with bad urban planning = people are not going to want to be there. NYC politicians are extremely short sighted, think they can continue to move taxpayer money into the pockets of 3rd party contractors (MTA, EZ Pass, Construction). But people will continue to leave, rightfully so.
As much as I want to blame the media for blowing things out of proportion, more than a few women walking alone have been randomly punched in the face by different men & that is not made up. My husband surprised me with a resy this w/e @ Pastis & I had him cancel it as I would be walking solo for the rest of the day after brunch. It breaks my heart as I have been to NYC many, many times & it has always been my fav city. I really hope something changes.
From a native New Yorker: (1) Avoid certain neighborthoods that have a high crime rate, (2) make AT LEAST a six figure salary per year or have side investments, & (3) DON'T be poor/low income. Those are THE THREE rules for living in New York.
Avoid East/South Harlem and the entire South Bronx especially
Also don't drive or own a car. NYC is actually very safe, in part because most people here don't drive, which greatly increases your chances of dying or being maimed. Cars are also really expensive.
So be rich
Lol
@@JeremyPGreen Speak for yourself if you live in Manhattan and Brooklyn you might not need one but you do need one in some parts.
@@centipedekid9824 I don't need to speak for myself. Most people in NYC don't have cars. Even in the parts where you "need a car", there are good buses and many people don't have cars. Even on Staten Island, where I used to live. Also, we're talking about how to be safe. Not having a car is by far the most effective lifestyle change you can make to be safer.
I've lived in NY all of my life. That being said, I have never seen crime and mental health issues so bad on the subways. It used to be that you would hear about terrible shootings/stabbings happening at 3am in very isolated areas. Now they happen all the time at 4pm in midtown.
tbh I think it's more about the availability of this info with social media/citizen/nextdoor. Objectively, the numbers are lower.
Although moved back recently, this is home no matter where I've been. Every place has pros & cons, just a ? of what routine you have and be safe in all you do 👍🏽
yes.. a fact
I just returned from a trip to NYC with my aunt and sister. Not once did we ever feel in danger or scared. It seemed very safe to us. We did a few things that you have mentioned to do while visiting and really enjoyed them! Thanks for the tips!!
Statistically, it is the safest big city in the country
I'm going to assume you were in Manhattan, specifically Midtown and/or Lower Manhattan.
Thank you so much for your clearheaded response to the crime issue in nyc. So many "new york youtubers" have either moved away or turned their channels into panic magnets. I was relieved to hear you break it down the way you did.
panic magnet such a perfect term for the one channel I used to watch which was entertaining and funny and informative and has changed to a bunch of dramatic fiction all for more viewers and the almighty dollar. My advice is if you subscribe to a channel that starts doing this unsubscribe at once.
I bet you’re both talking about Cash Jordan… Unsubscribing wasn’t enough. I had to block his channel from my feed, because it was still getting bombarded with his right wing racist dog whistle clickbait and its ludicrous AI-generated thumbnails.
Indeed!!!
@@barbaramuzychka3836just watch the Cambodian vlogger for laughs about bedbugs (he's just joking) and his constant Mamacita.😄😄😄. I come to HerebeBarr for good info, but when I want to laugh, I watch the Cambodian. 😄😄😄
Yes, the attacks on women were due to Maga toxic masculinity according to some papers. Those white supreemists are everywhere. I'm sure the women concerned agree, too. Cognitive dissonance is real, especially in NY.
My dad finally visited me. I got to take him around my favorite places in the city and where I live. His experience of the people here was vastly better than what the media spewed at him. It was an awesome reunion!
I saw a guy on crack eating a coke can in central park
Last summer my 12yr old daughter and I spent 8 days in NYC and stayed in 4 locations: Financial area, Time Square, Chelsea and Greenpoint Brooklyn. Before leaving we were told to avoid eye contact with New Yorkers, don’t do this or that, avoid the Subway at all costs, don’t walk anywhere, etc…
Happy to say I didn’t want to leave NYC and would happily return. I was so glad I made eye contact with a Mets fan on the subway en route to the Yankees game. He was awesome to talk with and got the whole car going! I’m so glad we felt safe enough walking around all the areas we went to and what hours we did. We loved the city and the people. I would love to come back. Only wish we’d gone to Jackson Heights otherwise a perfect trip!
And we did the Staten Island ferry for the statue at sunset and it was perfect and free!!!
YOU ARE RIGHT! News are always highlighted the more sensational. I am in LA, and the homeless are in lot of places but still millions of people live here and aren't leaving.
Went last week. With an 11 year old. Went to theatre, museums, visited relatives. NO PROBLEM!!! Walked all over.
Check your pockets again.
Crime is definitely overblown for a city with over 8 million residents but legislation like bail reform hasn't exactly made this place a paradise the past few years. Main issue is that it's way too expensive, and the same house that my parents bought in South Queens in the late 90's for 275k ish is now worth over a million. Taxes are sky high too, working 7 days a week at my previous job would gross me around $1600 but barely net me $1100 after taxes and union fees. Once I get my Engineering degree, I'll be eying a move to somewhere like Texas. New York City is a nice place to visit but living here is rough if you're not rich.
I have been watching your videos ever since I booked my trip in November, I arrive in a couple of weeks and after seeing so many negative videos about NYC it made me start to worry but this channel always gets my excitement back for my trip. Truly the best NYC tourism UA-camr out there
Ty for this video brotha, me n my family are from PA and we love visiting NYC cuz of the ppl and atmosphere n beautiful communities. You did a great job being honest about my home away from home 🏡
Its the catch and release and non prosecution of theft under 950 dollars which has caused a lot of the problems . My uncle was a cop in Chicago and he said laws were the same there too. The whole system are just way too soft on actual criminals
Bail reform is the main problem. They're passing all these laws for the sake of not discriminating against minority but what about the victims and the law enforcement who put their lives on the line to catch people? it's so cringe. They want to make it a race issue, but it's not.
No, it's not. That's just the elites trying to blame the problems they created on drug addicts. The real problem is private equity firms destroying NYC real estate and the city constantly being lobbied (or taking bribes) by billionaires to cut and defund city services and programs.
Apparently there’s people further above in the comments that think things like that are fine.
@@Scarsofevil I agree with you. The whole system is a total mess to be honest. Its like that here in the UK too particularly in London criminals are getting away with everything
@@xr6lad Some people are oblivious then lol because its far from totally fine The situation is a total mess in my opinion.
Thank you for this video,. Real and honest. Love New York!
Thank you so much for responding to my comment 😊 I went to NY since posting, and was just more focused than usual keeping an eyes on my surroundings while walking around. I felt safe just being more aware.
FANTASTIC video Jon! Great Q’s and thoughtful answers! 🙋🏼♀️👏🏻💫⚡️. TY
Your take on the crime situation was so level headed. Hopefully it gives people some clarity, and eases their fear when they visit. This was a great video!
You’re awesome Jon. Positive and real. You know how much I’ve used your awesome channel in planning my trip to NYC. You better believe I’m going to the bodegas delis and little hole in the wall places you’ve recommended aswell. I pay no attention in clickbait negative news. Thanks for this update, excitement level for September October is getting very high
Very fair assessment, going to visit again this year and will give ya feedback
Thanks so much for this video ! *high fives* !
Great Info Jon Thx
Thank You for this video! I watch other NY UA-camrs and the drift into negativity is real and obvious. I refuse to click on these trolls. Anyway, I really enjoy your videos. Your presentation and delivery combined with the videography is excellent.
I can walk into my local Walgreens or CVS or any store and get what I need. You cant say that about your NYC stores where you have to wait for someone to unlock the case if the item is even still available after the last shoplifting. NYC is beyond gone. Its never coming back. Escape from New York movie will soon be reclassified as a documentary.
Its only big retail stores that do that lol. This isnt an issue in small local shops
@@joles8 --- How many "local shops" are still open? You will notice he says he goes to CVS often, but didnt include the locked cases.
I lived in NYC for 25-years, only leaving during the Mexican Beer Sickness insanity. While business is down, rents are still insanely high, and if you haven't had your rent increased in 3-years as you said, you're either on rent control or won the lottery with your landlord. I'm a big boy so I never worried about the crime, but when all my favorite restaurants were forced out of business I finally decided to leave, and I'm glad I did. But while I agree that some of the bad press about NYC is exaggerated, I didn't hear anything from you regarding the illegal immigrant crisis, and from what I can see from the hundreds of videos, IT IS A FULL-BLOWN CRISIS. So what do you have to say about that??
Just visited NYC, loved the diversity, heard so many languages, felt safe, people were HELPFUL ..braved the subway, I will be visiting again.
yeah right
_Then you woke up._ 🤣
It’s great to visit, and an absolute hellscape to live in.
Eric Adams must had pay you or something for you to say that it’s safe . 😂
diversity is our strength
Thanks for answering the question about Prospect Park or Central park. Was also nice to meet you on the Brooklyn promenade. Thanks for your videos, they have been of great value for our visit. Keep up the good work!
I’m arriving this Wednesday, April 17. I’m traveling by myself, first time ever in New York City let alone the East Coast… I’ve been using your videos as a reference since January and this has made me feel much safer.
This was very comprehensive. It's also what you make of where you are. Cheers, Jon! ✌️
Americans alternatively suffer from TMI (Too much information) and no historical context. Both of my parents are from New York (Queens and Brooklyn). As a young child in the 1970's we would drive from Massachusetts to NYC to visit my grandparents. New York in the 1970's was a dirty, crime-infested hell hole compared to today. Does NYC have issues? Of course. What big city doesn't? But compared to many other cities NYC is 'clean and green'. I ❤NYC and visit whenever possible...
I agree with you, though it’s objectively filthy. A small place with 8 million people that live in its bound to be dirty.
It took years for NYC to become what it was in the 70's,' it might go back to that if it's financial situation deteriorates
I moved from Chicago to one of the largest cities in the world. American cities are crime-infested hellscapes. Crimes and murders are not normal city "issues" in the civilized world
@@JJ-si4qh Which city did you move to? There's crime and murders wherever humans live. My point is that compared to the 1970's New York is cleaner, greener, and safer....
Very informative as always
Thanks for answering my question!!
Very thorough update!
Thank you for answering my question, after years of watching your videos we can’t wait to visit in December 😊
We just visited nyc last week had amazing time everyone from there is very respectful. i didn’t see crime yes im sure it happens ,But definitely enjoyed my time there enjoyed the people there more than the people of the area of California im from. I will definitely be visiting again.
Even the elevated post-pandemic crime level is nothing compared to the NYC I grew up in during the 1980s and early 90s. Media hype is a real thing.
So true. Anyone that grew up in NYC in the 70s,80s and early 90s looks at today’s crime stats and laughs out loud. I remember going to the park in The Bronx when the monkey bars were made out of metal and had to watch where I landed because there were so many heroin needles everywhere. This is nothing compared to back then…
However, back then they jailed them and had bail. Now, they get arrested and slapped with a desk appearance ticket.
Migrant Crime exists now unlike back then.
Not to mention the smog. You couldn't even see the NYC skyline from a plane because it was covered in smog.
@@blpalv15so your saying jail time wasn’t a deterrent then, if crime was higher back then?
A MASSIVE thanks, I was worried about bringing my children to NYC because of the crime, but the way you put it about, its a thing everyone is just jumping on just to make some money and its not really as bad as its being made out has relaxed me considerably.
theres crime in every major city, but crime in nyc is still really low compared to soooo many cities
Thank you for always uploading interesting videos.
Compared to Tokyo, where I used to live ,I inevitably had an image of NYC as a chaotic and dangerous place (in extreme cases, I thought I would encounter some kind of crime if I walked a few meters).
NYC was always at the bottom of my list of potential overseas trips, because my fear exceeded my interest to it.
However, your video gives a very fascinating insight into the culture of NYC, which has changed my impression.
I will try to visit NYC when I get a long vacation.
I visited Manhattan after a year’s absence. The city does not look different than before. More weed smell everywhere. I did not see garbage bags on sidewalks. Instead, there were actual bins, the same as you see in suburbia. Subway smells like piss and hobos, a total dump and an embarrassment. Needs a major, MAJOR cleanup. Great food. As I was riding the subway to my destination, I must have touched something while on the train so one of my hands smelled like homeless person. Yuck. Had to scrub my hands at a coffee house. Great place to visit, especially if you enjoy smelling weed, piss and homeless unwashed smell. I would visit, but never live there. Smelly hobos need to be dealt with one way or another.
Well done! I would like to add just a little more perspective on the crime issue-- you alluded to it briefly when you mentioned Boeing. Other comments here say that NYC crime is "out of control", which is nonsense. Statistically, NYC remains one of the safest large cities in America. And as for the subway, it helps to remember that nearly 4 million people ride the subway EVERY SINGLE DAY. Pay attention to your surroundings.... as you should anywhere you go.... and you'll be fine.
I love everything you wrote bro. This place is literally magical. And if you grew up here during the 70s,80s and early 90s you know that crime now is nothing compared to what it was back then. I couldn’t even go to the park back then because my parents were afraid of me stepping on heroin needles.
People are addicted to online videos of crimes and unable to read simple statistics. It's sad to see.
@@Eliguitar1 its an election cycle so you know what that means.🤦🏾
Well said! I agree!
It's so nice to have the National Guard taking care of you in the subway. Makes you feel really safe that they check old ladies' handbags for weapons and explosives.
Love watching your videos about NYC. Looking forward to coming back in 4 weeks. Especially now o have some great ideas from you about food and bars off the beaten track.
Every city has issues, some more than others, but by and large, NYC is extremely safe. I've lived there, admittedly pre-covid, but loved it. It is such a diverse city. Want to go to the beach? Hop on the subway and head to Coney Island or the Rockaways. Want to go to Connecticut or Long Island? Take the train. Want to visit the grave of Alexander Hamilton? Trinity church is where it's at. A beautiful park that doesn't feel like it's in a major city? Central Park is where it's at, even on a gloomy, rainy day. Take the subway, walk, and just get out and explore.
I stay at Hostelling Internation on Amsterdam Ave on the Upper West Side whenever I visit NYC. I then head out to Brighton Beach, Coney Island and Nathan's for fried clams and sweet corn once a year. Love it!
NYC still the best
Best at what? Crimes?

I am glad you did a video on this topic, I love NYC. I grew up in NYC and I know of places to visit and eat without the tourist, so it makes for a nice trip. Yes it is expensive but ask locates and you would be surprise some of the amazing places to eat. Brooklyn is the better borough for cheaper food and attraction. Have fun safe travels.
Going for my first trip to the US and New York next week.
Your vids are just brilliant :)
Greetings from Poland ;)
We were in NYC last week and loved it! Yes its very expensive but following YOUR tips made the week amazing. Love the deli's & bodega's (as rec). We walked RI and Manhattan Bridge (as rec), spent lots of time in Chinatown, Brooklyn, Meatpacking/Chelsea and Thai-town (Elmhurst). Tried a B.E.C. and went to Pastrami Queen. THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEOS ❤
The crime is over dramatacized. Some of these other "content creators" would have you think New York is cosplaying as the movie mad max.

I was there this weekend. I go six times a year. It was noticeably cleaned up. Especially regarding homeless and drug addicts. Not once was there a homeless camped in my subway car. My hotels homeless guy was gone. Highly visible police in larger subway stops. Markedly better than a year ago. Also seeing the eclipse in Central Park was a blast. Someone needs some credit for the improvement.
Great video ! My parents lived - & met - in Manhattan decades & decades ago ! And my son has lived in Brooklyn for … gosh like 14 years ! I miss it & can’t wait to get back. Love your videos
I was there last week, and we went to Empanada Mama after the theater. We had no problems!
Love that spot, first restaurant I went to on my first trip to NYC❤
well I guess NY is totally safe then.
Doesnt matter what big city you’re in. Situational awareness is a crucial skill and it’s your best weapon to keep you safe. Even empty verbal threats can escalate into something horrendous. You just remove yourself upon notice if possible and your chances of getting in harms way drops tremendously. Always better safe than sorry.
It’s been 2 years since I’ve moved here and still enjoy it. Of course I’ll continue staying alert but I’m not worried. The only thing that will get me out are these ridiculous prices if they get too expensive!
Thank you, Jon - good video with some honest answers to often “heard” problems about NYC, that aren’t accurate. I grew up in another often maligned city of America, Chicago, that also faces the same doom and gloom social media wannabes for clicks. I love visiting NYC, and going back to Chicago (would move back if I could but my work in Atlanta makes this impossible). We who are diehard urbanists, and supporters of what big cities offer can only shrug and ignore those who seem to hate urban cultures. Thanks for all your content.
Thank you for sharing.😊
Another great vid, i'm coming again to NY next week from OZ , with the wife this time her first visit ( your vids help ) p.s. we are going to Bleecker st pizza
Very balanced video from someone who works in midtown Manhattan!
Yes. The key word is "balanced". His take is realistic, not hysterical.
i ll be there in 3 weeks, hope theres good weather!
Those were exactly the questions that I had lately. Thanks dude!
I feel a heck of a lot safer in NYC than I do in London these days. And I live in the UK.
Go back to nyc and watch that change lol
I’m going back in a couple of weeks and I can’t wait.
London is gone! It does not exist anymore.
I wonder what those two cities have in common that makes them so safe and so nice to live in...I left London for good in the early nineties and today those times would be considered paradise.
I noticed this trend during covid. It became a national past time to obsess on NYC. People who don't live here, who have never lived here and in fact hate NYC and cities in general all obsessed with how horrible and destroyed NYC was. It was like an online video game. A way for people to engage in the culture war I guess? Whatever the reasons, it certainly is despicable. Imagine if people in NYC obsessed over every meth overdose in the middle of the country? It would be absurd and mean spirited. If you want to see "death wish" and "taxi driver" as documentaries I guess I just feel sorry for you.
Well said. I noticed that as well.
Not just New York. San Francisco, Chicago, and other big cities like LA. It’s gotten to the point where I avoid the comment section on any video involving these cities because they’re an absolute cesspool. It’s also always the same type of characterizations. “Liberal blah blah blah, sh1it on the streets, crime, you get what you voted for” from people who’ve probably never stepped foot in the cities they’re criticizing. Like Here be Barr said, these people relish it, and it generates clicks.
i will be there in 2 weeks - hope the weather will be good =))
cant wait
Thanks!
I am in the middle of my trip to NYC right now and I have to concede, the crazy people have been pretty prevalent.
I’m from South London (and spend/spent much of my time in what’s perceived as rough areas) so am pretty well versed with minding my own business and avoiding confrontation, but it’s just been another level here… my friend and I were literally screamed at on the subway yesterday in Lower Manhattan.
Awesome city with brilliant people and have had an amazing time, but yeah, have struggled with the crazies a little!
(Really grateful for the content btw, really helped inform our trip!)
Thanks for the info. Really debating on not going on my yearly summer trip to NYC this year.
@@amalgamate860 for what it’s worth, it was actually far more manageable in the time since I commented this. Think we just had a very rough couple of days with it.

Grew up in NY, moved away 30 years ago, visited recently, and loved it. But I wouldn't live there ever again. Cost of living and crime are out of control. Period.
You must realize that crime was exponentially worse 30 years ago, right? All major crimes down double digits from the 90s. murder down 82% vs 1990. Robbery down 83%. Too much media fear mongering has pickled people's brains.
thats why i moved to san francisco. best decision of my life

God. So true. You nailed it. It's not reality, it's the distorted reality portrayed online.
All cities have incidents and undesirable behaviours, that's the nature of the environment - not just limited to NYC. I recently visited for a full week, solo female and it was marvellous. Loved the people, interested in chatting and lots of randomness. Thanks for the videos and thank you NYC 💓💓😊😊
Great video. I’ve visited nearly every major and minor city, town etc in this country. You can find good everywhere, you can find bad everywhere, and you will ALWAYS find what you’re looking for. I love living here and it’s disappointing to see how overblown everything about us has become. Oh and Jackson Heights is the bomb 😊
I'm with you on the crime issue and what would actually cause me to leave NYC. Yes, crime is up, but it's blown WAY out of proportion. I encourage some of these people to read up on the 1970s and 80s - now THAT was a dystopian hellscape time for NYC. Be aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine.
Cost of living though might drive me out. I'm also lucky to be relatively rent stabilized at this time. But yeah, a week of groceries at even the local markets is running upwards of like $100 just for myself. Can't imagine it for families like yours. Thank God I found an Aldi in decent range.
I strongly disagree with you. When we say crime is out of control in NYC we really do mean that crime IS out of control. The problem is that the Mayor of this decaying city is gaslighting New Yorkers into thinking that crime is down when in fact it's not. AI Channels are one thing, but there are UA-camrs out there that will tell you that NYC has gotten bad. Listen to Actual Justice Warrior, listen to Big Hawk Yonkers Native Street Talk, listen to Phily Dom, listen to Danny's Auto Repairs, listen to The Angry Prepper we are not lying to you! There are already UA-camrs who have already left and/or planning to leave NYC for good: Michael Malice, Don't Walk Run Productions, ActionKid, Louis Rossmann, and most recently Xiaomanyc. Xiaomanyc made a video recently on the matter especially on his section on public safety. NYC is 100% done. Please listen to us.
He’s a blue pilled beta obviously.
NYC was worse in the past why didnt xiaomanyc leave when he was younger
500,000 people left New York this past year. There is a 40.2 million dollars dedicated to fighting retail theft alone. The DA has created a revolving door for criminals… I could go on. So you’re right. I think this UA-camr lives in a bit of a bubble and his response shows. Does that mean we should be panicking? No. But it’s important to be aware of the situation, especially if you’ve got kids.
We moved here relatively recently from the UK and bloody love it here! Definitely seen alot of horror story videos about NYC but day to day I just dont get that vibe (I may have rose tinted glasses on as Im new, but love it so far!)
Hey love your channel, I visited NYC from London England for the NYE celebration this year and had the best time ever!! I was only in the city 34 hours but managed to walk everywhere and never once felt unsafe. The food is amazing (I’m vegetarian and this is my favourite place in the world for food!!) I want to come back asap to eat some more 😜
New York is honestly the best place to live in. Love you videos ❤
If you're rich maybe
NYC is very fortunate to have you doing what you do.
Thanks Jon, the safety issue is similar in a lot of major cities and is often generated to feed the ‘media beast’ that is always hungry! Some great questions form viewers too. I can’t wait to visit again ❤❤❤
I am looking forward to visiting NY next month. Traveling all the way from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Kindred spirit here; Everything people are saying about NYC right now is identical to the way my beloved hometown, San Francisco. is being trashed in the media sphere. Like New York, San Francisco has its host of serious issues (many of the same as yours) but I would never leave the bay area. I just love it too much. I also adore New York very much and what i've concluded is "great, don't come". We're good without you. I love your New York Spirit because it echoes my own west coast version. Be well, stay strong and Viva New York
Born in Brooklyn. It is my favorite borough, especially Park Slope. So much history and diversity. There is also Prospect Park which has many fond memories for me. I can see why you love where you live now in the Slope.
Love your videos! Yes there is definitely a segment of America that roots for NYC to fail. You would never leave your apartment if all you did was get your “news” from the NY Post. Fact is, NYC is the greatest city on the planet.
I honestly don’t understand why people would want us to fail.. don’t they know that we subsidize a lot of the red states because of our enormous and wealthy economy?? Blue states are almost always in better economic position than red states..
Love nyc. I go at least twice a year, with friends or solo. Food n fun. Love your vids.
Awwww my question was included the neighborhoods you find well neighborhoody lol. i was secretly hoping you were going to say the upper west side aka my neighborhood = )
Very interesting! Was wondering can you do a vlog at the New York International Auto Show this month?
People need to learn the truth. Crime is still at an all time low.
He’s so right about the people who are making these anti NYC videos. It’s folks that don’t live here that have so much to say about here and they actually know nothing about living here. We’re still the capital of the world for a reason. I’m really feeling like it’s just envy at this point.
I love this man’s videos. Even though he’s not originally from the boroughs he’s tapped into the essence of what it’s like to be a New Yorker. I don’t care what anyone says, I’m a diehard New Yorker to the bone and always will be. I’ve lived in other places and I had to come back to this wonderful city that I call home.
You need to learn the truth. I use the 4/5/6 subway everyday. It's gotten significantly worse from 10 years ago. 2010-2016 was pretty nice. And now all of a sudden there are so many more hobos. I have seen people expose themselves multiple times on the subway. People smoking in carts. All that "crime" is unreported. And with the distrust of police after BLM, crime is probably way more under reported. Take these statistics with a grain of salt.
I'm from Toronto, Canada, and I've only had the opportunity to visit a couple of times - I loved it. We often get compared to NYC, but it's so much worse here. We have had so many buildings torn down, and so much has been lost - it's so expensive to live here, and for what? It's all condos and nothing to do now. The subway here is falling apart (and it takes me an hr to get to work, which I know a lot of New Yorkers do too), and people are gross. It's a good example of what NOT to do here. Even moving out of the city, two hours away, is $600,000 and more for a home. Sad to see my home city go to ruin.
@@jocelynsmyth6604 so sorry to hear that your city is experiencing difficulties. I would have never thought. I’ve only heard good things about Toronto so I’m surprised to hear that it’s not doing well. However, living in a big city has pros and cons. I tend to focus on the pros. It’s not perfect here but I ignore the negatives and stay in a positive headspace every time I walk out my door. Try doing that and you’ll see your city in a different light.😎
@daviddawes293 oh trust me, I love my neighborhood, and there are a lot of good people too - I'm also more on the positive side, but it goes to show that media / whoever can paint a really different picture of what's going on on the ground. However, we are hoping to move out of the city, for us, the time to live here has passed. But we do hope to visit new york again soon :)
Lol, I'm sure they are just envious and they're all dying to get some cultural enrichment. I wonder why people are leaving in droves and so many retail shops are shutting down.
I've visited New York City twice within a year, I didn't feel crime and homelessness were any worse than where I live in Manchester, England.
I'm visiting for a third time within a year in ten days time and I can't wait.
Social media narratives! Spot on!
I never thought I would leave NYC but here I am in NJ. I met a philly woman. Sux to see this happen to America's big Apple. ty libs!
Hey Jon Chicago gets pretty much the same reputation, yet I still live here. I could be traveling anywhere else, but I'm choosing to take a vacation in NYC.
Wear kevlar.... oh wait. That's illegal in NYC. At least wear urine-proof boots.
I just came back from a visit to Manhattan - I really liked it; have not seen anything crime related and never felt unsafe even in the subway - but of course it was only 5 days and I stayed near Wallstreet which is amongst the safest neighbourhoods (at least thats what I heard) I even tried some of your tips 👍
THANK YOU for not jumping on the "NYC is horrible" bandwagon. I've had to quit watching one of my favorite NYC real estate youtuber's because it's nothing but gloom and doom and the commenters just love to pile on. Plus your restaurant recommendations never disappoint!
You’re correct. “CJ” is now nothing more than a doomer using racist dog whistles and garbage AI thumbnails to get views.
Yeah that guy is a POS, he makes a living now talking shit about NYC but he never moves out to states like texas, florida, etc. I guess they don't pay as well, and aren't as nice. Also he wouldn't be able to make clickbait ragebait ITS OVER videos $$$
New York is New York. Can't wait to go back. Love the place.
Well done John, you are so level headed and rational.
You're definitely more positive than cash Jordan
Seconding Tasty Hand PUlled Noodles, it's so good! As for crime in the city, come visit just be aware of your surroundings at all times and don't stare down at your phone all the time.
The same things were said about New York City after 911. In Chicago, my hometown, people were weirdly going on about "poor New York" as if the city somehow deserved what happened there. "What will New Yorkers do now? Who will want to visit New York?" Blah blah, blah. The best comeback I heard was this, "Come...Don't come...whatever..." That's New Yorkers for you - not whiny penitents begging for tourists to come back. There will be big problems in any big city, but they will be dealt with, and New York will survive.
5:10 This is actually Forest Hills Gardens - A private community modeled after UK's tudor style garden cities, it's not the broader Forest Hills area. You can tell that their streets are privately owned and maintained (they have their own street lights and street signs etc). but the community is not gated / anyone could walk there. I would say that most neighborhoods in Queens have a "neighborhood vibe" to them and ideal for middle/working class people. Unfortunately, most of Manhattan's non commercial/rich areas have "a hood vibe" ...
I’ve always loved your channel. But with all due respect, you’re down playing it. I’m a ny native. Born and raised. Raised my kids here. But this time around, things are truly scary. I’ve never been afraid the way I am now. I fear for my kids daily. Don’t even get me started on the cost of everything. Things are grim here!
