In the middle of the 13th century, the first castle complex was built on the hill, but this place was settled as early as 2000 BC. This is the result of archaeological research.
In the beginning, Anwil Castle probably consisted only of a 2 to 3-story residential tower, the ruins of which can still be seen today. In the course of time, several outbuildings were added. Unfortunately, no remains of these are preserved today. However, their former existence could be proven by means of ground penetrating radar. There was also a cistern in the tower. This is a structural feature that is relatively rare. Outside the tower there was a second one. A ring wall could not be proven so far. The castle grounds slope relatively steeply all around and were additionally protected by a ditch on the northwest side.
Nothing is known about the builders. For the first time the castle appears in the writings as "castro Annwile" in 1385. At that time it was owned by the family of Röta.
Two years later, Catherine of Röta sold the castle complex to the Lords of Sax.
In 1406 the Appenzellers plundered the castle and damaged it considerably. All outbuildings fell victim to their destructive rage. It is uncertain whether the cistern inside the tower was filled in by them or whether this happened during the subsequent reconstruction works.
In 1440 Anwil is mentioned again in a document. At that time it was owned by Ulrich von St.Johann and his son Hans. The knights Ludwig, Jakob and Ulrich von Helmsdorf bought it from Hans in 1463. Until the early 17th century the castle changed hands several times.
In 1608 a certain Adam Tschudi of Glarus sold Anwil together with various goods to Laurenz Kunkler, the bailiff of Bürglen. The complex seems to have been in a bad condition at that time and was only referred to as a castle ruin.
Kunkler had the castle thoroughly renovated. A stair tower was built on the site of the outer cistern and a new furnace was installed in the tower.
His heirs sold the property to the city of St.Gallen in 1647. Since Anwil was now no longer inhabited, the complex visibly deteriorated. In 1852, the stair tower was demolished because there was a danger of collapse.
In 1984, the cantonal archaeology excavated the remains and thoroughly investigated the site. Among other things, decorated stove tiles and fragments of valuable drinking glasses were found. Renovations took place in 2005 and 2016.

Absolut richtig Simon. Vielen Dank für die Ergänzung. Das hatten völlig vergessen zu erwähnen. :) @Wolfgang Wind - Der dortige Ruinenweg führt neben der Burg Anwil noch an zwei anderen Ruinen vorbei. Namentlich Burg Last und Burg Heubärg. Zu diesen gibt es auf unserem Kanal auch entsprechende Videos. Hier die Links: Burg Last - ua-cam.com/video/CHOvlZr4sRk/v-deo.html / Burg Heubärg: ua-cam.com/video/HIjvGqAf_Xk/v-deo.html

If one think a little. These kinds of places was propably never built to LIVE in, because if you try live in this kind of "house"... its not nice.
People most likely preferred wooden homes etc. These stone buildings was most likely built for what we do these kinds of buildings today, for defense, and for protection etc.

Interesting thought. Whereas in this tower castle is documented that it was inhabited. Probably, as in many such castles, there was still a floor of wood, a so-called clerestory. There were usually the living and sleeping quarters. The whole thing is shown in our documentary film "Freienstein Castle - Robber Barons and Swords" in an animation. Here is the link to the documentary: ua-cam.com/video/138_Qc2ihPQ/v-deo.html
