Congratulations Andy .. Strong run in tough conditions 🙌 Loved seeing the footage bringing back some happy memories of running Abingdon a few times - Thank you!
Great running in those conditions Andy. I was due to run the Great South Run which was cancelled that day. Rain was horizontal in Portsmouth and the route is along the exposed seafront. Thanks storm Ashley!
Congratulations on getting a decent time in those conditions mate, not the pb you hoped for but pragmatically: you've taken a huge step forward in prep, gels and hydration on the run, and physically with the HR monitoring showing your strength. Accentuate the positives! Hellish conditions here too, so bad they cancelled the Great South Run which was 30 minutes away from my half!
Thanks mate, I’m pretty darn happy overall if I’m honest, I did my best and I know within myself I couldn’t have done any more… and that’s all we can ask of our bodies! Yeah so gutted for everyone running the great south!
@@TheFODRunner despite the driving rain and the wind, my god the wind, I smashed my pb for the half. I also, although a very small field, appear to have won my age category! I'll take the currently sore knee for that.

Well done Andy, still a great time in difficult conditions. That’s the issue with a marathon. After a long block of training it often comes down to the weather and how you are feeling on the day. But it’s an impressive time and entry to Boston/London/Berlin/etc. rest up and looking fwd to the next target
Well done Andy - your fitness is clearly much better than the conditions allowed you to run. Looking forward to seeing how much faster you'll get with another training block! Chapeau
Well done Andy. Watched a few of your videos and I feel for you. I did the Bath Bristol Railway Marathon yesterday in the same conditions, and my race seems to have mirrored your experience. All good until mile 23 and then the effort of running into the wind kicked in - three minutes off my PB. Great time in those conditions big man.
Well done Andy 👏🏻 I did Abingdon yesterday and it was really tough in the conditions; such a shame. Did manage to a new 5 minute PB of 3:25 so very chuffed with that 😊
Again, congrats Andy. 2:44 is a good time. You had a great training cycle and had a very good fitness level, avoided injury, solved your fueling issues but sometimes things that you cannot control get in the way. It was one of those days. Keep positive, keep your fitness level up I am sure you will get that PR soon. 👊
Great effort in tough conditions. It's been great following the trialling of new approaches to the training blocks over the last few months. Going to be interesting to see the results you get as you continue fine tuning the blocks.
That was a great race Andy. The conditions looked horrendous and obviously you are capable of running much faster. Seriously with your fitness at the moment I would be looking at another marathon within 8 weeks. As you said you were running no where near your threshold pace so I think you will recover quickly from this. I would have another crack as it would be a shame to lose the fitness you have now got. Right conditions, right race you will easily beat your PB.
Thanks for being real, Andy. I love and respect the fact that you show it as it is and don’t dress it up as something it is not. You ground it out and got a fab time in awful conditions. Mucho congrats.
Well done Andy! All we can do is keep training and get the best of us. Chicago last miles were hard as well. I got PB for 10’ (2h44m19s). Keep strong 💪
What you did out there was incredible Andy, given thoes weather conditions you would have been within your rights to stay with your group, but you didn't you went for it! and you should be very proud of yourself for that! The fact that you got no cramps etc means your fueling/conditioning was spot on. Like you said all you could do was control the controllable and you did that!
Great run Andy. For a minute there it looked like you were running with Ben Felton -- same look / build. Sorry for the rough weather conditions. Sure beats the heat though but yeah the wind can be a total deal breaker for a great race. I know how much work you put into this one and you looked great at the end and you have every right to be pleased. Also looked like a beautiful course. Incredible job Andy, you can only control the things you can control. I believe you will get that sub 02:38 and when you do it's going to feel even more special. Keep up the grind 💪.
Great stuff Andy. It's funny, i didnt really notice the wind 😅 and the rain was nothing compared to 2 years ago at Abingdon. That said i never felt right and the final 10 miles were really tough and felt super slow but still ended with a respectable 2:58. Also noticed HR was weirdly low! New to the channel look forward to further content.
Wow, brilliant time there! Much respect for not noticing the wind haha, were you tucked into a pack around those times at the top of the loop? Either way massive well done!
@TheFODRunner I don't know! It all seemed chaotic out there in the (what I guess 2:50-55 bracket). My first 15 miles were pretty consistent but there was no group with me. Up the hill to Drayton both times I was in something of a pack but from there pretty messy 😂 (second time at least was me slowing down)
Great effort Andy!! Conditions were tuff! I managed a PB of 2.42.24 from 2.58. Saw you at mile 25 near the underpass. You gave me loads of info during this training block and I am so thankful. Onto the next🫡
Really good effort Andy! I really struggled yesterday, crazy pain in my calves, which I've not experienced before. It's so frustrating to train hard for x1 effort and things not go according to plan. On to the next one! You'll be get sub 2:40!

Thank you 🙏 I am of a similar mindset… standing week after week of training ticks my boxes far more… the taper and the rebuild are the worst weeks 😂 I always look at a block and say to myself “gosh, imagine the fitness you’ll get from this at the end” and that really excites me 💯
Fantastic effort Andy! Shame about the weather but you pushed on and had a fantastic result regardless! I ran my 2nd ever marathon on Friday the 18th in Milton Keynes and smashed my PB from London by a whopping 27 minutes! Finishing with a time of 3:57:54 and coming 3rd overall!
Hey Andy, this is incredible in such weather, very very far from weather conditions suitable for racing. My big Congrats! Great time and pace in those conditions. You're my great inspiration! Thanks a lot for your great thoughts, views on your running channel. All the Best with further training and preparing for PBs! I'm sure they will come. :)
Great effort, Andy. The conditions definitely played their part! I, like you, are pretty philosophical about it. I came in 30 secs off a PB. I'll be back, loved the course, hopefully with better weather.
Really hard conditions. I had a very similar experience although I was very much back of the pack in this field. I just ran out of juice at 20 miles as the wind just sucked the energy out of me. I stayed tough and finished in my B-target pace. Well done on a fantastic run and thanks for all the info you share.
I emphasize! Last year I ran my first (and so far only) marathon through the remains of a tropical storm. 44 mph winds, heavy rain bands, long stretches along farmer’s fields with no protection from the wind, and about 6km of the race was along a trail with mud and deep puddles. It was a ton of fun, and it leaves me confident that given a better day I could have gone faster. It’s nice to have the built-in excuse. 😅
You’re an actual star 🌟 those were not fun conditions to go for a PB but you just put the weather to one side and went for it. Good for you. It was so good to hear at the end that you weren’t broken or disappointed and I look forward to the race recap.
Well done Andy! Superb effort in awful weather conditions but that is not in our control unfortunately so hope you have better luck in the next one. You will take this experience and a great training block with you 💪
Congrats buddy! I know it's easier to say but as long as you know that you gave the best of yourself you can be proud, the marathon is a difficult discipline where the slightest little thing can come to jam the system (like weather) 😒. so you can be proud of yourself 👏👏👏😉🇫🇷
Tough luck Andy but great effort! I was there too and can testify to the horrible conditions. Are you tempted to carry that fitness into another marathon attempt this year? Goodwood or Oulton Park perhaps?
Thanks, it was nasty wasn’t it! No, in all honesty 😂 I’ve mentally moved on now, proud of the run, I’m satisfied that I’ll go again next year and give it another shot

Thanks Thomas! I’m proud and I’m happy, that’s all we can ask for right? I’ve grown as a runner during this block and I’m excited to move forward now 👊
@@TheFODRunner yes, you have developed into a complete runner, and that includes the ability to put the right perspective on the race times. I agree with you that this race with the weather and the way you raced is kind of a graduation, which sets you up in a very good way for the next chapter in your running
Well done, excellent effort. I thought you were very sanguine about the wind in your preview. In my experience a tail wind is never as beneficial as a head wind slows you down. Maybe run another marathon in a couple of weeks?!
Thanks! Yeah I agree, I think the headwind takes too much out of you to benefit from the tail wind! No buddy, sadly! Rest - recover - reset and go again 👍
Thats a great time in those conditions Andy, but I do feel for you!! Literally 1 awful day of weather and it falls on marathon day 🙄. I had a similar experience in 2018, training for the London marathon. It was a cold winter for training, we had the storm, " the beast from the east" amongst others, but still my training went well. Then marathon day came around and it turned out to be the hottest on record at 24 degrees, I along with many others, wilted in the heat that day! 😏
Oh wow yes mate I remember that year well! I had 2 races in March cancelled with snow and then suddenly the weather switched and it was like a tropical heatwave!!
Historic effort indeed! I agree with you better to blow out trying than playing it safe - what’s the fun in that!? Very well done, it was brutal out there!
Thanks! I was in the right mindset for a full send… wait sat their like a coiled spring for so long then just cut lose and went for it! Good fun overall
Incredible run in unbelievable conditions andy. Feel so sorry for you that you got so unbelievably unlucky to get storm Ashley on that one day!☹️ you have certainly paid you dues, next one will be perfect conditions I hope
Congrats Andy you done so well for this also got court in storm was playing football and during one game had to miss vlogging the match it was that bad
Well done Andy, those conditions weren't the best on the 2 loops, it was tough going out there in the wind as I also was there running. Great training block and race 👏
Well Done Andy - super effort on the day - quick question though - 2 weeks out you did 15 x k at or above marathon pace and then a 21 mile progression where you did segments faster than today - 2 things - those combined workouts nearly combine 50 percent of your average weekly load 67 for the block...given the rule of a 80/20 split - do u think this week cost you on the day ..secondly the literature and research suggests that marathoners who follow a 17 day taper on average out perform those who follow a 7 or 10 day taper which again indicates this week was too close in my opinion. Also do you ever measure power as a metric ...given your form when you picked it up i imagine your power zone went into threshold because of the wind and hence why your last few miles fell off...remember you went from 6.18 to 6.07 and then to 6 mins so nearly 20 secs increase per mile in the wind - i would bet you went red on the power zones given your running form...Again well done on a super series of training - just my observations from a coach looking from the outside in...
Thanks! Some great questions… some hard to answer but I’ll try! I don’t follow the 80/20 rule, it’s never something I’ve worked with… my 15 x 1K was 15k worth of work, as opposed to 21k the week before… and the week after the 12k worth of work… also bearing in mind the session was done on a Tuesday so it was 2 weeks and 5 days, so nearly 3 weeks out. There was a build in session volume to the peak and then a reduction the week before this 15 x 1k… so it went from 21k down to 15k, down to 12k (12 days out) and then down to 4 miles on race week. So I’m pretty happy with that and wouldn’t change that 👍 if anything, I felt too fresh and wanted to be racing about 4/5 days before I did… i actually felt a bit sluggish on race day compared to a few days before when I felt like a coiled spring, so I think I bought everything down too soon. On the note of power, I can only go by what my coros says and that monitors power, and I don’t have a foot pod… but there are some big spikes around the times of the wind where I’m working, so you’re right there. However when I put my HR on the graph I seemed to maintain a level effort… so basically power output went up but HR only went up by about 2/3bpm. Also - I appreciate your observations btw, I know replies can look quite short / sharp but just know I value your input 👍
I think you could hang your hat and be proud of that race you kick butt that time in those conditions that probably took 10 minutes off your total marathon well done. I would say marathons are hard. I just told the friend who wants to do 100 K someday or next year and I said you already do marathons those are harder. This will be easy, good job and well done again and also thanks for caring us all along with you
Gutted for you in many ways as the finishing time does not reflect your fitness. But you gave it a great shot. Raced without fear. And you will take a lot from that moving forwards.
That weather looked pretty rough. Well done!!

Great effort Andy, I’m sure that’s a sub 2.40 on a calmer day! Well done for toughing it out💪
Fingers crossed one day! Thanks mate
It was pure type 2 fun out there. Had such a good time. Congrats!
Absolutely it was!!
Amazing work as always! What a grotty day but still smashed it 😎
Thanks buddy!
Thanks buddy, I hope so too 👊
Your a LEGEND!! That was a great effort despite those conditions. Easily sub 2:38 in better weather
Thanks buddy, really appreciate it! I’ll keep trying 👊
Congratulations Andy 😊👊🏾 those conditions were no joke.
Thanks buddy
Well done, mate. Cracking run in tough conditions
Thank you 🤘
Well done Andy! On to the next one!
Indeed mate! Thanks 🙏
@@TheFODRunner nicer conditions would have been a definite PB! Just unlucky on the day but you can now push to another level!
@@pintspiesandpbs3198 absolutely mate, time to stay injury free and lock in 🤘

Jesus Andy, that wind.. what a fab time . Well done 🎉🎉 savage indeed
Thanks Amanda!
Solid running despite the conditions well done Andy!
Thank you!
Well done Andy, those conditions weren't the best on the 2 loops, it was tough going out there in the wind as I also was there running. Great training block and race 👏
Thanks! It was tough wasn’t it, not the nicest! Well done on the race too!
Nice run Andy, you can't beat the weather!
Thanks mate!
Great job Andy
Thanks
Warrior 💪💪💪🔥. Bloody Ashley 😢. As always - I am impressed with your positive thinking Andy ❤
Thank you so much 👊
Fantastic running, especially in those conditions 👏
Thank you 🙏
Great effort mate
Thanks buddy 👊
I was so close to stop at 21 miles yesterday!! The weather was awful! Amazing time as always Andy🎉🎉
It was hard going wasn’t it! Well done on persevering through 👊
Well Done Andy - super effort on the day - quick question though - 2 weeks out you did 15 x k at or above marathon pace and then a 21 mile progression where you did segments faster than today - 2 things - those combined workouts nearly combine 50 percent of your average weekly load 67 for the block...given the rule of a 80/20 split - do u think this week cost you on the day ..secondly the literature and research suggests that marathoners who follow a 17 day taper on average out perform those who follow a 7 or 10 day taper which again indicates this week was too close in my opinion.
Great effort in those conditions
Thanks 👊
Superb running, Andy! You did great - that wind looked horrible! =[
Thanks!
Seem pretty harsh conditions! Tough luck precisely on the day of the marathon!... But you did great Andy!! Well done! You should be proud!
Thank you, I am 🙂 never take for granted running a marathon!
I think you could hang your hat and be proud of that race you kick butt that time in those conditions that probably took 10 minutes off your total marathon well done. I would say marathons are hard. I just told the friend who wants to do 100 K someday or next year and I said you already do marathons those are harder. This will be easy, good job and well done again and also thanks for caring us all along with you
Thanks so much buddy, I’ve appreciated your support throughout the series 👊
great racing Andy!
Thanks!
congrats 🏅
Thanks
Gutted for you in many ways as the finishing time does not reflect your fitness.
But you gave it a great shot. Raced without fear. And you will take a lot from that moving forwards.
Thanks guys, we can only race the conditions on the day I guess! Onwards now!
8:42 - Something about a ball bag? 🤣
Yep 😂 not me… what happens out on the course, stays on the course haha
