Yeah, why bother making this. Who is so ambitious to think of this impossible thing. Even European Union don't imagine forming one country. Countries will not agree because it is not in their interest. Would a single party know of every groups plights? We can't even form a military pact, do military drills and patrol the edge of the border of the territories of the members and sail on free waters.
The importance will be more in the economic perspective. Actually, in the mind of South East Asian Country, each country views it's neighbour as a region that should be safe and stable. So they don't mind too much with other country's problem especially if that country is very very far away or don't have significant relation with South East Asia.
As a filipino, i agree, but, if there will be a chance for us to become a one country, i want my country or other asean country to improve first because we still have a lot of problems in our country before we become as one country.
It’s impossible for ASEAN to unite as 1 country / Federation. Each of the country has very diverse policies, ideology, culture and domestic issues. They could only at best agree to exist peacefully, cooperate in trades and economy & development. ASEAN was initially formed in 1967 by Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippians & Singapore. It slowly expanded to its current 10 members
If only... but in a realistic world, political systems, language barriers, culture, and religion be the challenges to face. Not to forget to include those who think they are better than other mindsets. Free trade and a unified currency as the first step to mutual benefits.
If only this world shares the same currency, languages, political views and no religions... just imagine that... we will have lesser war, no more racism, no more fascist, no more foreign languages to confuse us, lesser social barriers, climate change will probably solve faster, and the prices we want to buy will be a lot cheaper since we all share the same currency. No more separation bs and this that cultural differences. Idc about diversity, because we have animals and plans in this earth, there's no need to diverse among people as that would likely create a war.

Because if something happened to one of ASEAN country and the source is from outside of ASEAN we know that the rest of ASEAN countries will be affected sooner or later. So if it is possible to prevent that it is better for each of the ASEAN member to do so.
Yes. Sometimes we’re rude with each other (haha) but when other countries (other than ASEAN) bully one of the ASEAN countries, we tend to become protective and loving with each other. ☺️

ASEAN has existed long before EU but has not progressed as much. It was formed more to prevent conflict than for integration. It is more like a community gathering of neighbours for chit chat. And currently Myanmar is not invited because of family violence.
As Indonesian I think this would be impossible, let alone unite with fellow established ASEAN country, even in Indonesia which has very diverse culture, big landscape and many island, it is very difficult to be equal in infrastructure and economy for whole region..
It would never be equal, in the end an island (java island) that house more than half the population would receive better infrastructure and has better economy than the other.

Not unless a non-ASEAN giant neighbor invades ASEAN, impossibility can be overcome with external threat. If for example this expansionist non ASEAN nation occupied the Philippines, it will easily conquer much of Malaysia and Indonesia as it will use the Philippine ports to launch its invasion. ASEAN is a good platform for Economic integration and political cooperation in an uncertain world. But nationhood is beyond reach, because differences are too deeply entrenched among the different countries. The current relationship between individual states maintains a healthy distance. We are great friends, but we're not keen on marriage.
Good are the intentions in this video. It will take a long time IF this project will ever consolidates. Some discuss it could be an economy similar to the European Union. However, its cultural ideologies are so diverse that will a long time to educate all the ethnic groups to accept and work together and share the same vision. Then there are local national-regional individual interests that do not follow democratic rules, and this problem is not only in one region. A more probable solution for a regional unification consolidation in ASEAN may be closer to what we see in Latin America, the MERCOSUR, or, AfCFTA. ASEAN needs to work for a free trade union and customs union first and make it really mature!

Otherwise, these minority groups become exaggeratedly assertive and become against any investment in infrastructure. This might be difficult because our cultures are really different. We would rather be just friends with trading partnerships. Ever since we open trade within ASEAN I can freely order apple products from Singapore 😅. I greatly benefited from this. Apple didn’t have a main office in PH or a warehouse. We have resellers who put huge margins. So ordering online was so great. On a general note buying products within ASEAN is easy. I heard Thailand textiles are so good so maybe I will buy that online as well. 😊

It's really a good tale but please remember that unifying the republic countries (Indonesia, the Philippines, and Singapore), the monarch countries (Malaysia, Brunei, Cambodia, and Thailand), the one-party communist countries (Vietnam, and Laos), that military junta country (Myanmar), plus that one young, fragile, and poor state (Timor Leste) is utterly impossible and if it does it will be a whole groundbreaking in the world political history.
I love how the word vibrant democracy actually work in SG. Anything between 66(round-up)-70 party stakes is considered democracy. Especially, you still need 2/3 parliament stakes to put up effective legislative concerns. Don't you just how democracy can be defined?
It's the result of a highly efficient administration. Regardless it's the choice of free thinking majority Singaporeans. Despite its size it has one of the best if not the best tertiary education in the world based on academic achievements. Its health care system is among the best too despite its size & challenging landscape.

Malaysia and singapore couldnt even stay in the same country, I doubt that it will be possible to unite countries with very different values and economic status. ASEAN as it is probably works best and increasing trade relations as well as collaborations is the way to go for now.

I would say the english languange will used on an ASEAN senate or parliment, since it’s the lingua franca and every diplomat should know it. But there will be no official languanges on a federal level.

I frequently travel to other ASEAN countries and make friends from each and i've fall in love with the people, language, culture, food and other aspect. ASEAN countries uniting into one big federation or country is as nonsensical as advocating for a united nations of Latin America. The cultures, different political systems and most important the vastly different essential issues each country faces makes such unity impossible. What COULD work out eventually once some of these countries come to political stability (even if that's not democratic) is a union like the European one. That would be much easier to accomplish and would make all these countries much stronger to the global market, even having the potential to surpass the EU in some categories. Still that's difficult and it will be even more difficult once the geopolitical interests come into the equation and once some kind of stepping back happens from china.
Considering that mainland Southeast Asia was at war with each other because of border since time immemorial, it's a hard concept for us to grasp and accept. The current ASEAN is the best system for SEA so far, and to further improve, all nations of SEA shoud address and fix their domestic issues first.
As a citizen of one of the ASEAN countries, we are very happy and contented to have unity among differences in the region. There is no need to take over one another's sovereignty or combined to be a single country.

Tapi menurut saya, baik Indonesia maupun Filipina tidak cocok bergabung. Pemerintah mereka jauh lebi ahli dalam menjalankan negaranya, bahkan pembangunan di Malaysia jauh lebih merata dibandingkan dengan Indonesia. Indonesia cuma menang di lokasi geografis dan sumber daya alam, sedangkan kemampuan manajemen, merealisasikan pembangunan, dll itu buruk sekali. Di dalam Indonesia sendiri aja masih banyak wilayah yang belum terbangun, sepertinya tidak feasible jika mau ditambah dengan Filipina yang notabene mirip dengan kita. Pemerintahan Singapura sangat baik dalam menjalankan negaranya, terlihat dari pembangunan ekonomi yang sangat pesat. Sedangkan Malaysia, DPR mereka benar2 mewakili kepentingan rakyatnya. Pada umumnya, Malaysia terdiri dari 3 kaum etnis, yaitu Melayu, India, dan Tionghua. DPR mereka benar2 dipilih dari 3 kalangan itu dan masing2 memperjuangkan kepentingan golongannya makanya kalau kita ke Kuala Lumpur, bakal kaget karena sudah mulai mirip Singapura kotanya. Kalau Indonesia, pemimpin negaranya punya banyak hambatan dalam menjalankan visi misinya, belum lagi DPR yang memperjuangkan kepentingannya sendiri. Ibarat perusahaan yang ekonominya bagus tapi butuh IPO untuk menjalankannya karena jajaran direksinya dan manajemennya sudah terlalu kotor.
No need for these countries to become one country due to it's diversity. Strengthening economic and trade relations is the goal. I see the Philippines and Indonesia already have very close and vast archipelagic relationship, two or more countries but one strong partnership with Brunei and perhaps even Malaysia.

If ASEAN is about to unite as a single nation-state, it can learn from how Indonesia doing things, uniting a vastly diverse groups of people into a single nation-state. And for that reason, ASEAN's first priority would be to build a new shared identity among its members. Reflected from Indonesia's experience, that could be creating a shared language, and I think Bahasa Indonesia can be used as the regional language, and change the name into "Bahasa Asia Tenggara", since the language already successful at uniting different ethnic groups among the Nusantara archipelago.
Unlike America, Asian country have absolute different history, beliefs, value and almost anything. We refer our self Asian because we are on the same continent. But we never see each our each race as same to one another. We view our self our own without needing to influence each other because each of us prefer to solve our own rather to seek help from each other. We are too different to each other to be politically one.

There are also various disputes within ASEAN countries, including disputes over sea and land. Moreover, Southeast Asia has no reason to become an enemy of China. Taiwan is an East Asian country founded by the Chinese nation. Even if Taiwan and China have a hostile relationship, Taiwan will not completely become China's enemy. But Southeast Asia can cooperate with Taiwan to control the South China Sea.

If it happens like a Federation. Indonesia would dominate internal legislature cause of size. Malaysia the economy cause its in the center geography wise and near Singapore. Philippines its Diplomacy, as country its most aligned politically with western counterparts. Singapore as the Capital. Vietnam a economic powerbase but also might act like the military arm like Texas for the US. Thailand would be like a cultural center with rich tourism, but it would be one of the richer regions. ASEAN as a single nation will not happen in our lifetime. The political make-up of ASEAN is too diverse, each with their own interest that could be conflicting to each other. Vietnam's single party communist system, for example, will not consider losing power and influence as part of a larger entity. However, a cooperative economic block should be possible and that will a great achievement already. And from there, a few generations later, something like the European Union could be formed. Think of it as how the European Economic Community becoming the foundation toward forming the European Union.

Asean countries are very similar and very different at the same time it will be hard for these countries to be a one big country. Indonesia had a very great job in handling this difficulty of regional ethic and cultural diversity whit its hundreds of ethics but that because in the past all region in Indonesia had a same story of being colonized by one strong country where the people had similar feelings to the neighbors and to work together to fight the colonizers and to be one big country. The inequality between developed countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and the newer merging economies of Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar are astronomically huge. Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei would have to literally spend hundreds of Billions of dollars to develop the nations with smaller economies to get onto par and that in itself would take decades of work and cooperation between the countries. Its a monumental task and I don't think this will ever happen in my lifetime.
In the most ideal form of governance for these big nations to join a federation, is that foriegn policy and south east asian defense will be held by the federal government, while member states will do whatever it please with it’s territory and economic development. There will be federal taxes, however it’s very little, maybe 5% per nation or even as small as 3%. So those emerging economies won’t be a big burden for indonesia, malasyia, brunei and singapore.
Singaporean here. I’m gonna go out on a limb here & say we prefer the status quo. Becoming one country means all your problems become ours, & we’d be swamped with your poor & desperate. Also, we won’t benefit from currency exchange differences when we travel or trade within the region. On the flip side, all the region’s corrupt politicians won’t have a safe haven for their slush funds then… for this reason alone, many of your politicians will be against it.
That is a typical Singaporean mindset. Some of them think that they’re in a pedestal. However, they will never thrive if we boycott and leave them alone. A big part of their manpower is from neighbouring countries. Most of their resources are imported. More than 90% of their food is imported. If they think that other ASEAN nations will rely on them, no. What will they do with all those money without the help of their “poor and desperate” brothers, as you say?

It's impossible because of the terrain. Religious differences. Burma, Bhutan, Northeast India, Chittagong, Bangladesh, Yunnan, Tibet, Bhutan are more likely.
I think, the most possible asean countries to unite are: Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore. Because of its language, we can understand each other with Bahasa Melayu. The biggest barrier is language barrier.
ASEAN peoples are too diverse for unification. I was shocked at how different and similar we are with Malaysians. Even if there is an initiative to unite, this unification might take centuries to complete.
A confederacy can be formed instead of a federation or a union. It is weaker and the member states have more autonomy than a normal federation. Foriegn policy and south east asian defense will be handled by the federal govermment, while each member state can have it’s own militia/military and build their own infrastructures without the federal government’s interference. It’s a weak union, but should be good enough to start a real plan for a real federalization.

The control of Singapore is up to the Singapore government and is sovereign. And has a fully functioning economy, government and an armed forces to protect our interests

Because many people from across ASEAN will try to cross border and sneak into wealthy rich country to work there. Economies and Currencies will cause ASEAN officials to have a very very hard headache. No it won't. There is problems as there's no such thing as seamless integration but it will have the same problem as when East and West Germany was integrated back as one. The middle class move to poor side since commodity price is lower there and the poor move the rich side for employment opportunity.
There was an ancient empire centralized in eastern of java island called Majapahit empire (wilwatikta) which has teritory about more than half of nowdays asean member countries combined.
Majapahit wasn't centralize Haha. It just establish business ties with neighboring countries. This is called de-centralization. The real centralize empire that once conquered most of ASEAN was the Khmer empire

ASEAN countries becoming a united group or nation is possible not only because they have a common economic aspirations but because they have a common on-going history of national liberation movement. Yes, by learning from each other and cultural exchange will greatly bring about such unity. The people of these nations all believe that there is more than just economic development. The upliftment of their spiritual consciousness and relationship with Mother Earth is paramount to0 them.
The smartest thing the ASEAN could ever do would be to become a EU style Federation. Adopt 1 currency, joint alliance military, adopt a universal visa passport. If they join BRICS they will run into big controlling players like China. They already have issues with big players like the USA. This will give all these nations the ability to really get economic reform happening and to be able to get harder negotiations done, especially with all the bigger players. This would give them their independence of China and The USA. There’s really no downside

I believe we should unite with countries that are close to us in relation and culture first, such as Indonesia with Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Brunai. Or Laos with Myanmar, Cambodia, etc. After it was successful, then we could try to unite it to be one powerful nation. if that is the case, you would risk the entire geopolitical region divided into 3 major factions that, if as you expected would unite into a supranational state otherwise it will become competitor to each other and will start to impose hegemony through force, asean as it is, is a much better proposition than that... the "not so similiar" neighbours are brought to the same table, even so this community of nations can't even decide what to do when one of it's government is kicked by a coup
As an overseas-born Vietnamese in Thailand, I do love & respect all my friends from all differences no matter language, barrier, culture, or ethnicity especially all of those who come from Indochina and Burma. But I'm mostly talking in general here since the idea of a united SEA isn't that hard to imagine given the history of vassal states and expansive Indian influences so take it with a grain of salt since I can only really vouch for the history of the Philippines. What if we became like the EU? We could maintain our own laws, and parliamentary systems, but we could have a common currency and free trade without restrictions between all ASEAN nations to facilitate economic growth. This would allow us to build infrastructure to connect our nations better for trade more easily: imagine not just a KL-SG high speed rail, but a bullet train from Singapore all the way to Bangkok, or even Hanoi or Phnom Penh! On top of this we could co-operate military more with an ASEAN military alliance, which would be handy as our world is becoming more volatile, and individually, we could be more prone to subjugation by foreign powers...
This is impossible. Why? Here are some factors. 1. ASEAN is very diverse. Religiously, culturally, mentally, etc... 2. There are multiple ethnicities, you have the Malays (This includes Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and Malays in Singapore) Vietnamese, Thai, Khmer, Filipinos, Chinese, Burmese, Laotian, and the Tetum people. I'm pretty sure, that one ethnicity might assert dominance over the other possibly brewing a civil war and racial tensions amongst all ethnicities. 3. The location of the central government and capital city would be confusing. Because ASEAN is home to 6 major cities. Mainly: Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Singapore, Hanoi, and Bangkok. So looking and establishing a seat of power would again, lead to instability. 4. Political system: ASEAN, again, is a diverse region. There are Republics like the Philippines, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Singapore, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Laos. While there are monarchies such as Brunei, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand. 5. Party system: there would be a lot of disagreement between the ASEAN states. Why? Some follow a multi-party system and some adhere to a single party system. 6. Religious tensions: Going back to my first point, ASEAN is religiously diverse. The Nusantara (Malay) countries adhere to Islam, while mainland ASEAN is a majority Buddhist. While the Philippines and East Timor is caught between the middle because both nations are dominant Roman-Catholic. 7. Language Barrier: Though, the Malay countries wouldn't have a hard time communicating with each other, some Timorese can easily adapt to their language since Timor-Leste was once part of Indonesia, the Philippines could catch up learning Indonesian or Malay since it is 10% similar and grammar and vocabulary is near identicaly so it wouldn't be much of a problem for them. The Thais and the Laotians are mutually intelligible, but how about the Indian, Chinese minorities in Singapore? Or the Burmese, Khmer, and Vietnamese? Sure we could adapt English as our official language, but there are only 3 nations who have a majority population that is fluent in English, only the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore. So other nations need to catch up. 8. Currency: All nations have their own currencies. Therefore, we can adapt either the US Dollar as the currency, or the Brunei Dollar or the Singapore Dollar, but just renaming it. 9. Internal security: Myanmar's politicial instability is dangerous if ASEAN decides to unite as one nation. The Burmese military is known for their coups, and the risk of rebellion against a new ASEAN central government will be high so expect coups to occur on a regular basis. 10. Corruption, Southeast Asia is known for corruption. Unite all the ASEAN countries, and it will become a plunderer's paradise. The idea of having a united Federal ASEAN is there, some people dream of it, but feasibility wise, it's not gonna work. There would be a lot of disagreements and tensions. Internal conflict will be a major problem, even to the smallest of things. Like, what side of the road should you drive is already a topic that is divisive to all. But I think ASEAN is best as a political organization that tackles economic affairs, trade, and it upholds peace internally and externally. Cooperation between ASEAN nations should be stronger considering that all of the world's trading routes pass through ASEAN. Basically we control how the world operates because South East Asia is one massive chock point. If Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines decides to close of it's Exclusive Economic Zone to the world, then the whole world would crumble. Trade coming in to America and trade going out of China could easily paralyze the world's economy.
When you see around half of the GDP, natural resources, and populations of ASEAN are from INDONESIA and VIETNAM. But the highest GDP per capital of ASEAN is SINGAPORE then BRUNEI. It's clear that ASEAN will never become one country.

Yeah, why bother making this. Who is so ambitious to think of this impossible thing. Even European Union don't imagine forming one country. Countries will not agree because it is not in their interest. Would a single party know of every groups plights? We can't even form a military pact, do military drills and patrol the edge of the border of the territories of the members and sail on free waters.
The importance will be more in the economic perspective. Actually, in the mind of South East Asian Country, each country views it's neighbour as a region that should be safe and stable. So they don't mind too much with other country's problem especially if that country is very very far away or don't have significant relation with South East Asia.

ASEAN is a good platform for Economic integration and political cooperation in an uncertain world. But nationhood is beyond reach, because differences are too deeply entrenched among the different countries. The current relationship between individual states maintains a healthy distance. We are great friends, but we're not keen on marriage.

Good are the intentions in this video. It will take a long time IF this project will ever consolidates. Some discuss it could be an economy similar to the European Union. However, its cultural ideologies are so diverse that will a long time to educate all the ethnic groups to accept and work together and share the same vision. Then there are local national-regional individual interests that do not follow democratic rules, and this problem is not only in one region.
A more probable solution for a regional unification consolidation in ASEAN may be closer to what we see in Latin America, the MERCOSUR, or, AfCFTA.
ASEAN needs to work for a free trade union and customs union first and make it really mature!

This might be difficult because our cultures are really different. We would rather be just friends with trading partnerships. Ever since we open trade within ASEAN I can freely order apple products from Singapore 😅. I greatly benefited from this. Apple didn’t have a main office in PH or a warehouse. We have resellers who put huge margins. So ordering online was so great. On a general note buying products within ASEAN is easy. I heard Thailand textiles are so good so maybe I will buy that online as well. 😊

ASEAN countries uniting into one big federation or country is as nonsensical as advocating for a united nations of Latin America. The cultures, different political systems and most important the vastly different essential issues each country faces makes such unity impossible.
What COULD work out eventually once some of these countries come to political stability (even if that's not democratic) is a union like the European one.
That would be much easier to accomplish and would make all these countries much stronger to the global market, even having the potential to surpass the EU in some categories. Still that's difficult and it will be even more difficult once the geopolitical interests come into the equation and once some kind of stepping back happens from china.
It's basically impossible consider even the EU is not considered a country.

Tapi menurut saya, baik Indonesia maupun Filipina tidak cocok bergabung. Seperti yg anda katakan, ada banyak kemiripan antara Indonesia dan Filipina, seperti banyaknya penduduk, pembangunan yang tidak merata, sumber daya alam yang melimpah, bahkan sampai sistem pemerintahannya.
Tapi di sana masalahnya, sistem pemerintahan Indonesia tidak sebagus Singapura ataupun Malaysia. Pemerintah mereka jauh lebi ahli dalam menjalankan negaranya, bahkan pembangunan di Malaysia jauh lebih merata dibandingkan dengan Indonesia. Indonesia cuma menang di lokasi geografis dan sumber daya alam, sedangkan kemampuan manajemen, merealisasikan pembangunan, dll itu buruk sekali. Di dalam Indonesia sendiri aja masih banyak wilayah yang belum terbangun, sepertinya tidak feasible jika mau ditambah dengan Filipina yang notabene mirip dengan kita.
Pemerintahan Singapura sangat baik dalam menjalankan negaranya, terlihat dari pembangunan ekonomi yang sangat pesat. Sedangkan Malaysia, DPR mereka benar2 mewakili kepentingan rakyatnya. Pada umumnya, Malaysia terdiri dari 3 kaum etnis, yaitu Melayu, India, dan Tionghua. DPR mereka benar2 dipilih dari 3 kalangan itu dan masing2 memperjuangkan kepentingan golongannya makanya kalau kita ke Kuala Lumpur, bakal kaget karena sudah mulai mirip Singapura kotanya. Kalau Indonesia, pemimpin negaranya punya banyak hambatan dalam menjalankan visi misinya, belum lagi DPR yang memperjuangkan kepentingannya sendiri. Ibarat perusahaan yang ekonominya bagus tapi butuh IPO untuk menjalankannya karena jajaran direksinya dan manajemennya sudah terlalu kotor.
No need for these countries to become one country due to it's diversity. Strengthening economic and trade relations is the goal. I see the Philippines and Indonesia already have very close and vast archipelagic relationship, two or more countries but one strong partnership with Brunei and perhaps even Malaysia.

If ASEAN is about to unite as a single nation-state, it can learn from how Indonesia doing things, uniting a vastly diverse groups of people into a single nation-state.
And for that reason, ASEAN's first priority would be to build a new shared identity among its members. Reflected from Indonesia's experience, that could be creating a shared language, and I think Bahasa Indonesia can be used as the regional language, and change the name into "Bahasa Asia Tenggara", since the language already successful at uniting different ethnic groups among the Nusantara archipelago.

There are also various disputes within ASEAN countries, including disputes over sea and land. Moreover, Southeast Asia has no reason to become an enemy of China. As a Laotian, I personally hope ASEAN countries are able to continue to maintain and further enhance spirit of ASEAN solidarity, relationships and cooperation for the sake of national and regional interests and peaceful and sustainable development. It is and will be a good idea for ASEAN nations to respect, promote and enjoy their diversity and differences. ASEAN has its own uniqueness which could be utilised as a means for interests of every individual country and ASEAN as a whole.
ASEAN doesn't have to be all the same bocoz of the fact that NOT all people, including ourselves and our family members, are NOT all the same physically and mentally.

ASEAN as a single nation will not happen in our lifetime. The political make-up of ASEAN is too diverse, each with their own interest that could be conflicting to each other. Vietnam's single party communist system, for example, will not consider losing power and influence as part of a larger entity. However, a cooperative economic block should be possible and that will a great achievement already. And from there, a few generations later, something like the European Union could be formed. Think of it as how the European Economic Community becoming the foundation toward forming the European Union.
If they want to merge into a singular nation then they need to do what Joseph Tito did to the union of Yugoslavia while adding to some improvements

Asean countries are very similar and very different at the same time it will be hard for these countries to be a one big country. Indonesia had a very great job in handling this difficulty of regional ethic and cultural diversity whit its hundreds of ethics but that because in the past all region in Indonesia had a same story of being colonized by one strong country where the people had similar feelings to the neighbors and to work together to fight the colonizers and to be one big country. For Asean to be one country the same most happens like Indonesia's past where other power have attack and have impact to the region where the people will start to think as one big brother
The inequality between developed countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and the newer merging economies of Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar are astronomically huge. Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei would have to literally spend hundreds of Billions of dollars to develop the nations with smaller economies to get onto par and that in itself would take decades of work and cooperation between the countries. Its a monumental task and I don't think this will ever happen in my lifetime.
In the most ideal form of governance for these big nations to join a federation, is that foriegn policy and south east asian defense will be held by the federal government, while member states will do whatever it please with it’s territory and economic development. There will be federal taxes, however it’s very little, maybe 5% per nation or even as small as 3%.
So those emerging economies won’t be a big burden for indonesia, malasyia, brunei and singapore.

Singaporean here. I’m gonna go out on a limb here & say we prefer the status quo. Becoming one country means all your problems become ours, & we’d be swamped with your poor & desperate. Also, we won’t benefit from currency exchange differences when we travel or trade within the region. On the flip side, all the region’s corrupt politicians won’t have a safe haven for their slush funds then… for this reason alone, many of your politicians will be against it.
That is a typical Singaporean mindset. Some of them think that they’re in a pedestal. However, they will never thrive if we boycott and leave them alone. A big part of their manpower is from neighbouring countries. Most of their resources are imported. More than 90% of their food is imported. If they think that other ASEAN nations will rely on them, no. What will they do with all those money without the help of their “poor and desperate” brothers, as you say?

It's impossible because of the terrain. Religious differences. Burma, Bhutan, Northeast India, Chittagong, Bangladesh, Yunnan, Tibet, Bhutan are more likely.
I think, the most possible asean countries to unite are: Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore. Because of its language, we can understand each other with Bahasa Melayu. The biggest barrier is language barrier.

ASEAN peoples are too diverse for unification. I was shocked at how different and similar we are with Malaysians. Even if there is an initiative to unite, this unification might take centuries to complete.
A confederacy can be formed instead of a federation or a union. It is weaker and the member states have more autonomy than a normal federation.
Foriegn policy and south east asian defense will be handled by the federal govermment, while each member state can have it’s own militia/military and build their own infrastructures without the federal government’s interference.
It’s a weak union, but should be good enough to start a real plan for a real federalization.

The smartest thing the ASEAN could ever do would be to become a EU style Federation. Adopt 1 currency, joint alliance military, adopt a universal visa passport. If they join BRICS they will run into big controlling players like China. They already have issues with big players like the USA. This will give all these nations the ability to really get economic reform happening and to be able to get harder negotiations done, especially with all the bigger players. This would give them their independence of China and The USA. There’s really no downside

You know, historically, majority of these nations used to be ruled by the same family from the sultanate of Brunei. Until colonization happened. The Philippines' pre-colonial kingdom of Lusung (origin of the name Luzon, and means "to submerge") for example is ruled by a certain Rajah Ache (known as Rajah Matanda or the Old Rajah) who is married to a princess of Brunei and is himself a grandson of a sultan of Brunei.

@@ao6370 I've probably worded this wrong but from what I recall, a lot of the Indianized southeast Asian Nations are vassal states connected to the Sri Vijayan empire and are mostly from the same lineages. But I'm mostly talking in general here since the idea of a united SEA isn't that hard to imagine given the history of vassal states and expansive Indian influences so take it with a grain of salt since I can only really vouch for the history of the Philippines.
Also, a lot of this is of course speculative since for the most part, a lot of these states rely on oral traditions to pass down history, which are mostly romanticized epics embellished with mythology.

What if we became like the EU? We could maintain our own laws, and parliamentary systems, but we could have a common currency and free trade without restrictions between all ASEAN nations to facilitate economic growth. This would allow us to build infrastructure to connect our nations better for trade more easily: imagine not just a KL-SG high speed rail, but a bullet train from Singapore all the way to Bangkok, or even Hanoi or Phnom Penh!
On top of this we could co-operate military more with an ASEAN military alliance, which would be handy as our world is becoming more volatile, and individually, we could be more prone to subjugation by foreign powers...
This is impossible. Why? Here are some factors.
1. ASEAN is very diverse. Religiously, culturally, mentally, etc...
2. There are multiple ethnicities, you have the Malays (This includes Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and Malays in Singapore) Vietnamese, Thai, Khmer, Filipinos, Chinese, Burmese, Laotian, and the Tetum people. I'm pretty sure, that one ethnicity might assert dominance over the other possibly brewing a civil war and racial tensions amongst all ethnicities.
3. The location of the central government and capital city would be confusing. Because ASEAN is home to 6 major cities. Mainly: Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Singapore, Hanoi, and Bangkok. So looking and establishing a seat of power would again, lead to instability.
4. Political system: ASEAN, again, is a diverse region. There are Republics like the Philippines, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Singapore, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Laos. While there are monarchies such as Brunei, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand.
5. Party system: there would be a lot of disagreement between the ASEAN states. Why? Some follow a multi-party system and some adhere to a single party system.
6. Religious tensions: Going back to my first point, ASEAN is religiously diverse. The Nusantara (Malay) countries adhere to Islam, while mainland ASEAN is a majority Buddhist. While the Philippines and East Timor is caught between the middle because both nations are dominant Roman-Catholic.
7. Language Barrier: Though, the Malay countries wouldn't have a hard time communicating with each other, some Timorese can easily adapt to their language since Timor-Leste was once part of Indonesia, the Philippines could catch up learning Indonesian or Malay since it is 10% similar and grammar and vocabulary is near identicaly so it wouldn't be much of a problem for them. The Thais and the Laotians are mutually intelligible, but how about the Indian, Chinese minorities in Singapore? Or the Burmese, Khmer, and Vietnamese? Sure we could adapt English as our official language, but there are only 3 nations who have a majority population that is fluent in English, only the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore. So other nations need to catch up.
8. Currency: All nations have their own currencies. Therefore, we can adapt either the US Dollar as the currency, or the Brunei Dollar or the Singapore Dollar, but just renaming it.
9. Internal security: Myanmar's politicial instability is dangerous if ASEAN decides to unite as one nation. The Burmese military is known for their coups, and the risk of rebellion against a new ASEAN central government will be high so expect coups to occur on a regular basis.
10. Corruption, Southeast Asia is known for corruption. Unite all the ASEAN countries, and it will become a plunderer's paradise.
The idea of having a united Federal ASEAN is there, some people dream of it, but feasibility wise, it's not gonna work. There would be a lot of disagreements and tensions. Internal conflict will be a major problem, even to the smallest of things. Like, what side of the road should you drive is already a topic that is divisive to all. But I think ASEAN is best as a political organization that tackles economic affairs, trade, and it upholds peace internally and externally. Cooperation between ASEAN nations should be stronger considering that all of the world's trading routes pass through ASEAN. Basically we control how the world operates because South East Asia is one massive chock point. If Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines decides to close of it's Exclusive Economic Zone to the world, then the whole world would crumble. Trade coming in to America and trade going out of China could easily paralyze the world's economy.

When you see around half of the GDP, natural resources, and populations of ASEAN are from INDONESIA and VIETNAM. But the highest GDP per capital of ASEAN is SINGAPORE then BRUNEI. It's clear that ASEAN will never become one country.
