I might publish a bit more details about the algorithm at some point, but right now it's a kind of mess and far from finalized. In the meantime, you might also like Robert Bosch's approach; I'm guessing he starts with basic dithering for the vertices, and then applies a Hamiltonian/TSP search, e.g. instagram.com/p/CvTgs1ottJY/
