This is an underrated channel, considering the balanced and knowledgable reviews and the fab presentation. I just came from your Dirac Live review now to listen to this - night session here in Germany ;-)

Have been quite intrigued by the A1 as a historical sonic landmark for Musical Fidelity and being a proud owner of a M5si. Very much looking forward to the full review and comparison with the M3si.

The direct mode bypasses the preamp gain stage. With modern high level line sources you should try it. The amp sounds even better with this plus it makes the pot have a more useable range. I’m currently trialing this at home and even biamping it with my MF M6sPRX power amp. What I can say is that this amp is akin to a very good modern not too tubey tube amp. For the price it is a real bargain. In my view it would have been an excellent buy even at twice the price.
Ok i see, that's why i can still control the volume in both situations, thank you i will test it, having a lot of fun with the A1!
Can't wait for the follow up and comparison! The A1 should be able to drive difficult speakers > current: 25 Amps peak to peak (pretty amazing). For example, an Audiolab 6000a does 9 Amps. Anyway, enjoy your hollidays and cheers to Laura Pausini 😄

Hey Mad Audio, the direct / normal switch … what exactly is it doing? When pushed in (normal) the volume seems to be reduced and when switched out “direct” it seem to be much louder, but the manual says -10dB in gain when in direct mode , but it that an increase or reduction?? Very confusing, Brian
Dear Brian, i know look like an error in the instruction manual, i already asked to Musical Fidelity about it, i will give you guys the update in the review. By the way Direct is bypassing the preamp stage gain and if you don't need it could be better sometimes.
@@MadAudiofficial Hello Mad Audio, Musical Fidelity Canada finally replied with the same answer + the manual is in error. Direct mode (button in) bypasses the gain stage resulting in a -10dB in gain. Thank for confirming this and I look forwards to your update video 🙂.
