BUYERS GUIDE - LAND ROVER DEFENDER

  • In this video, I'll show you the key areas to inspect if you're thinking of buying a Land Rover Defender.
    I hope this video serves as a good guide to give you the confidence you need to spot some common Defender issues and avoid buying a bad one.
    I must stress this is a general guide, check for excessive rust, excessive oil leaks, and look over the underneath like I've shown. If the chassis has huge holes, there's holes in the bodywork and you can see the ground when you lift up the carpets; walk away... unless you're prepared to pay a professional or do the work yourself.
    Thank you for the support, drop a comment and let me know what you think!

    Great video. One thing i would add, specifically on the Tdi's, is to test drive the vehicle and get it up to operating temperature. Then pull the dipstick up and see if you can see 'steam'. Consistent and clearly visible steam means the motor is tired and you will probably need to throw some money at it - something i wish i knew before i bought a 1998 Tdi!

    If you're looking for virtually rust-free right hand drive vehicles, Johannesburg is a treasure trove. Something to check for in hot climates that won't be a problem in England is that the rubber seals on the windshield supports perish resulting in leaks through the bolts and down the bulk head. A dead giveaway is the door seals having melted onto the frame slightly. This was the case with the Defender I bought. It was otherwise in fantastic condition. Luckily the vehicle had clearly been kept inside.

    I've owned and driven landrovers of all shapes and sizes for nearly 30 years and always appreciate good buyers guides like this. Noticed you have a set of Davanti Terratuora's on the 110 how do you find them? i saw them at LRO in September and quite liked the look for what i use my defender for. Maybe you could do a tye review for a range of tyres from the extreme ones on your builds to the standard tyres. Like the advice of avoiding rusty ones unless you buy cheap, that exactly what i did with mine (paid very little for it) and 5 years and 120000 miles later its still going strong, getting weary of welding though, time for a new chassis!

    Hello. Greetings from Paris ! I own a defender 90 Td5 as a second car. Never been able to high rev it and up shift quickly like a Golf or a sport car. The gearbox doesn’t like it and blocks or grind the agressive up shift. Especially 1 to 2d, 2 to 3d. If I up shift slowly on low revs, everything is smooth. How in the video the up shift is so quick on high rpm ? Many thx for your feedbacks. Merci ! Julien

    Can I ask, which defender model and engine do you consider to be the best base to start building a dreamcar? 90? 110?
    Td5? Tdi?...

    • @Averell64
      @Averell64 3 роки тому +1

      I just bought a TD5 and asked myself the same question beforehand - 90 or 110 is entirely up to personal preference (you want a small car, get a 90 - want a larger one, get a 110, want a long pickup, get a 130). As for the engine - from what I have found it doesnt really matter too much as long as the rest of the car is good. The TD5 starting from modell year 2003 can be electronically tuned (interesting for EURO4 certificate in germany). It is also noteworthy that the TD5 also has a chain instead of a cambelt. But in general - both the TD5 and the 300TDI engines can run really really long and reliably if taken care off properly. For me personally the TD4 was not an option as the prices for TD4 Defenders were quite a bit higher and a tad out of my Budget. I ended up getting a 2004 TD5 110 for 20 grand (Euros) which was initially completely mike-sandered (wax in chassis and other empty spaces) and only had 200k km on it. Only rustspots were the bumper (easy fix for around 120 euros) and the rear doors (little bit more effort but if you know how to weld fixable, especially since the aluminum didnt start corroding yet). Kind of a lucky grab though as the sellers fucked up their description and made it seem super dodgy, when we visited them though it turned out they were simply a little lost with the internet but otherwise insanely honest people lol.

    I'm toying with the idea of possibly importing a military surplus armored Snatch as a potential "bug out" vehicle. The ones I have seen listed are '94s, that have been professionally rebuilt and up-graded for the military, but have very low mileage. RHD is road-legal in the US. I would have to somehow have to pay someone such as yourself, for a thorough professional inspection and evaluation of any such vehicle. If you are familiar with these, do you believe them to be worth buying? I'm essentially prepping for the coming crises, and want a street-legal vehicle that would offer some protection if the worst happens.

    poor build quality compared to a hilux or land cruiser ,doors are cheaply made, the whole door handle assembly is made of plastic crap destined to break ,and annoying to replace ,dash, guages etc get old and tacky, again plastic crap and poor quality ,like gear knobs , like a Harley Davidson ,you have to spend a heap of money fixing everything that's crap from the factory ,by engineers who refuse to upgrade stuff, but keep on putting out the same poor engineering year after year ,makes you wonder what fumes they are inhaling ,unless you like spending your spare time and money forever working on something and swearing at, it buy a Toyota

      Nonsense, you know what cars usually present skyrocket prices in 3rd world countries. Old school Defenders for a good reason reliability and easy maintenance and the reason why in so many countries it costs in between 50k up to 100 k plus due to importation taxes. Is cheaper to maintain than a new fiat or honda.
