People hate hearing this, but a lot of super stylish people have very little variety in their closets. They take a few ideas that work the absolute best on them, and they buy variations on a theme. I'm 6'5" and relatively slim for my height. I like pretty luxe, fashion forward jackets, somewhat arty or edgy tees, skinny jeans, and some sort of boot. Mostly in black and gray, but with a few jewel tones. Pretty much all of my clothes work well enough together that I could get dressed in the dark if I wanted to. On paper it sounds limiting, but since everything goes with everything, the combinations I can put together are practically endless. Having some pieces that only work with a few other pieces is *much* more limiting. Another thing people don't like hearing is unless you really love shopping, find a few brands that fit you beautifully, and tend to make things in colors that suit you, and don't deviate from them. My husband hates shopping, but still looks put together because he sticks to a few brands that fit him really well. It's really worth putting the legwork in and try on everything you can get your hands on, because once you find what works, you won't have to change often. Lastly, spend the most money on what you're going to wear the most. You see guys spending hand over fist on dress clothes that they'll wear once or twice a year, while wearing H&M the rest of the time. That's totally backwards. Spitting straight facts mate! Funnily enough I had a very similar video in the works but I think I'll hold off on releasing it for a bit because you have just done it so much better haha!
The 1/3th rule is really nice, but I must say that it doesn't always apply. Myself for example, I am 1.98 meters and have (even for that length) pretty long legs and a small torso. Having a shirt tucked into my jeans makes my legs look *extremely* long, like I'm a walking tree or something haha.
that means proportionally you're not 1/3, not tucking your top in will give you 1/3, I think 1/3 always looks good, but there will always be different ways to achieve it because we're not all proportioned the same. I have long legs too, looks off if I tuck things in too much.
Ive always had a sense of what looked good on me and what didnt and this really put things into perspective. The 1/3 rule is brilliant, it explains a lot why when i wear cropped outers or tuck in it looks more aesthethically pleasing. Also the part of being skinny and short not being recommended to wear baggy or very skinny pants, that part is sooo true aswell. I have a pair of baggy pants and they rarely look good on me.
I have short legs. It’s hard to pull off the rule of thirds, but with some effort I can. It’s a matter of shorter jackets and tucked in shirts, as you suggested. Everyone is shocked when I comment I have short legs because I’m just a master at wearing things that are flattering to me. Great advice for most men!!
I have short legs, an incredibly long torso, and super broad shoulder and hips and waist, with a relatively average sized head which looks small by comparison. I am fucked.
Think this to myself constantly hahah. Getting into clothing and fashion has done wonders for me in keeping me motivated in dropping weight so I can try and start dressing how I like
Never given my outfits too much thought but coincidentally the one day I decide to go clothes shopping this pops up on my front page. Will be sure to keep some of this stuff in mind while I'm trying to find the right fit for me - Cheers!
This is true, most of the time you’re not just yet comfortable in the outfit. I bought a couple of clothes 3 years ago when I got into fashion and I was pissed because they didn’t look good on me and I couldn’t return them because I got them online. I just left dem in my closet until last year when I decided to try them on and I found myself wearing them more often, they became my favorites and I was pissed when I went back to the site to get more and they were all out of stock.
Wow, this video perfectly describes my styling journey. I wish this video came out years ago and save myself a lot of money on clothes lol. From proportions to the rule of 3rds, I had to discover these things for myself over a long period of time over a basis of simply figuring out what looks aesthetically pleasing.
A lot of these basic stylist choices I think also work well for womens' body type too - especially the 1/3rd rule if you're more square or "boy shaped" it can help especially with suits/jacket combos.
I'm a girl and I really love the 1/3rd rule look. However Its been really hard to implement it in my wardrobe. I dress in a masculine way and have a hourglass figure, so these 1/3rd looks look kinda weird on me because of my hips and then I start to look feminine. I hate it because I really love this style! However I'm not giving up, I'm still trying to find a solution.
There was a bit in the video about matching colors to your skin tone values, which reminded me of other ways-including skin tone-to determine which colors suit you best. That includes eye color, hair color, and the coolness/warmness of it all. Contrast also plays a very important role in determining the best color palettes for yourself. I think they call of that “seasons”? (Note: if you have warmer skin tones, gold jewelry/accessories look best on you. If you have cool skin tone, then sliver is best.) None of that is set in stone either, I think it’s just based off of color theory and stuff. I’m not sure if this channel is just for dudes, so sorry if I’m barging in, but this was really useful for me! I value comfort/practicality over looks most of the time and would like to change that up a bit, and this video definitely gave me the confidence!
I feel you, 5 years ago i cant wear anything other than skin tight jeans, i think people wearing regular jeans looks ridiculous. Now I realized how ridiculous skinny jeans are for males, especially when i looked at my old pics
I gotta admit, you do give useful good and encouraging advice plus I like listening to you. You exude calmness and help people be confident in themselves and not just about matching outfits with personalities, skin tones, size and built... etc. Thank you. Live Long and Prosper!
the perks of being slightly skinny with tall legs is that your body is basically 1/3 already. Just a simple tuck-in and you're ready to go. Still wanna buff myself a bit so i can look good in talk tops and cargo longpants though :))
throughout my teenage years i've implemented the 1/2 and 1/2 rule and i always felt my legs were being coverd or were too short compared to my body. I havent even imagined i can wear my jeans and tee differently, but now i'll give your advice a try. Maybe i'll try a 2/5 and 3/5 look at first to get used to. Thanks.
Insecurities are a natural human emotion, style is a personal choice and I think having the freedom to wear what you think looks cool regardless of your body is important to finding confidence in yourself without comparing yourself to others. If someone tells me "your tall, you would look good in ____" im going to tell them to go suck one because I don't give a damn about what that person thinks because its just unwholesome to put someone in a box like that. Its like someone saying "this is a great song" I might not think that its a good song at all, but its the person's individual taste and they are not wrong just because im not a fan doesn't mean its not good, it just means I don't personally find it to be my taste, fashion is the exact same and telling people "if your this you can't wear this, you shuld wear this instead " is the same bland corrupt thinking that made shows like the swan and extreme makeover, and I don't support that kind of close-minded thinking that leads people to self harm.
Sound advice, yes, was there too and it took me a while to figure out what sort of close/fit was made for me. Great vid as usual mate, have a nice Sunday 🙏🏻
No wonder straight jeans look better on me .. they tend to have a higher rise that gives you the 1.3, 2.3 look .. low rise pants are a big part of the issue .. think shorter shirts (or tucked in) and higher rise pants and you will see
This video provided me with a very practical approach to further developing my style. I love the FoG style and it's still my go to, but I would like to venture slightly and attempt the reverse 2/3 proportions as you mentioned. Also, I really love your hair. Thanks for the dope video, boss.
It's really important to know your skin tone. When I realize what type of season I am I started dressing in different shades of color, like khaki, mustard, beige. I'm an autumn type. I began to notice that in the black clothes I liked so much I looked like I was genuinely ill. It was hard for me to break this barrier because I thought I would look like a colored parrot :D Meanwhile, it turned out that in subdued colors I look more natural
This is good advice but only for clothing that allows some type of elasticity or ability to be positioned. You won't be doing rule of 3rds with skinny jeans, it's just not how they're designed and it would look insane to hike them up like dress pants or other types for a longer leg look unless you're going for a high water look. For more mainstream and semi-casual looks like are showcased in this video, rule of 3rds works perfectly, but for alternative styles it's a whole other game. I was a scene kid and still dress mainly in skinny jeans and tight fitting tees and jackets, wearing very tight clothing leaves very little room for positioning and rule of 3rds so completing the look is all about accessorizing. Matching hats, style of shoe/boot, wristbands, chokers, piercings, tattoos and how to show them off, hairstyle, belt, down to how you carry yourself and how you position when you sit or your resting expression. The outfit is just the base for the look and the accessories complete it, not the proportions. Imo many of the "stylish" looks are just extremely boring. They look good only because they're well color coordinated but it's usually just flat color on top of flat color with some layers. Just experiment and wear what you think looks good on you without worrying about mainstream style or chasing trends.
I think people got confused by the images I used. It’s not about wearing high waisted trousers, tucking in a tee or hiking up your trousers. It’s about having the bottom half of your outfit making up 2/3 of your overall look. I was also a scene kid back in the day and from what you explained, you still did the rule of thirds then. You wore skinny jeans and then a skinny top or jacket. Your outfit was probably 2/3 jeans and then 1/3 your top. It’s just about wearing an outfit and break it into thirds. You can do this however you like. Wearing baggy trousers and a shorter tee untucked, skinny jeans and a shorter tee untucked or a shorter hoodie or jacket, tucking your tee in, it doesn’t matter. It’s just trying to avoid wearing an outfit that can be split at the centre into halves as this usually looks less flattering. This is only a guide too, not an actual rule (even though I called it a rule in the video) and can be broken.
There's nothing much I can do, I am a short skinny guy every piece of clothing i put on all the same result looks awful. But I never let this drag me to depression and anxiety of life.
@@karlgeraldpabustan8329 but I like Harry he's always on point you'll never get bored watching his content I do learned a lot from him not just limited to fashions but also life's lesson.
The part where you talked about suddenly wearing something different from what you normally wear and thinking it looks weird reminds me of how it was when I first tried on my current favorite pair of jeans. At the time, I’d already been transitioning from skinny jeans to looser jeans, though it was always still tight enough that it was very form-fitting around my hips and thighs. While shopping for new jeans though, I found a pair of 80’s style mom jeans that, for the first time out of anything I’d ever worn, was only form-fitting at my waist and loose everywhere else. It looked very baggy, off, and kind of silly to me at first, but something about it drew me to it, along with the fact that it was the most comfortable pair of jeans I’d ever worn. Now I wear it _constantly_
A year ago i was at the Point where i wasnt Sure If i could wear certain Things. I decided to Just buy a Statement piece and Started to try Out more distinct Fits. It really worked i stopped looking so Basic in my clothes. Also being a Designer meant Basic principles Like rule of thirds or color theory come naturally to me anyways. Applying those isnt as hard If you get used to it
Nice break down! I’m going to try and use this info next time I’m out looking. I’m 6’3”, 240 lbs, and broad shouldered. I’ve found the trim/snug tee, and just barely snug in the thigh, blue jean just on the hip (with a nice chucka of course) to be my look. Anything out side of that, say a suit, and I’ll let the men at the suit shop pick for me. They haven’t done me wrong yet!
It seems like for the rule of thirds to work on the top you either have to have a tucked in or short shirt/inner layer, is that pretty much the only thing you can do to achieve that look?
My boyfriend was struggling with picking an outfit one day and I legit just told him to wear a black T-shirt, tuck it into some black slacks/jeans, throw on a belt and wear some nice shoes. He looked so much better compared to when it was just an untucked shirt and jeans
Lovely video, thank you! :) I agree that we often don’t “see” something at first. I used to think that high-waisted bottoms are too sexy, so I avoided them like the plague because I didn’t want to draw attention to my figure (I have an hourglass body shape). I was always confused as to why I look stocky and heavy in low-rise bottoms and loose shirts. Lo and behold, high-waisted bottoms are truly the best choice! Yes, they *are* flattering but I try to wear them not too tight. The result it that I look good, *feel* good and my shirts finally stopped getting untucked 😄
It’s because I’m overweight. I’m short and stocky and I need to get in better shape. I used to wear baggy clothes to try and hide it but I realized slim fit is the move a couple years ago
Ya i have a really small head... like most little kids have a bigger head than me and im 6'0 , 190 lbs and muscular. Can't do much about having a tiny head, but it did take me the longest time to finally figure out that was why i always look weird no matter how much muscle i put on and style clothes i wear. I also have very long legs, short torso and long arms... so pretty much i am deformed. Lol
Usually I say that whenever I wear short sleeve shirts, or really any shirt if I don’t have a jacket or a sweatshirt over it. I’ll just get a thin jacket (those thin exercise ones) and then roll up the sleeves
Great video mate, couldn’t agree more with your final thoughts having switched to wearing oversized clothing myself when all I used to wear was tight and fitted, great content 👍
This 3/3 rule is very important for styling. For example I'm a short guy, so when I'm wearing my oversized T-shirt I'll make sure to pair it with a short pants, or ankle pants. And when I want to wear a jeans, I'll make sure to wear a regular T-shirt or shirt for my tops.
Yup wearing a high rise pants or long top~torso upper clothing looks good on everybody. Too bad high rise pants supply is none here. Straight fit goes well with dad rise pants.
Went to the store roughly 9 years ago with a friend who decided to get me some clothes since I have no fashion sense. To this day I'm still wearing the same 2 sets in rotation. Even got duplicates of the same jeans and shirts. Maybe it's time to try something new.
Hold onto your stuff, because those things will come back a round at some point in the future. Most fashions and trends are more so cyclical rather than in and out.
Answer: because I'm obese. It immediately makes shirts and pants look awful. A shirt will looks great on a skinny person with a cool slim body yet the same shirt will look awful when resized to fit a fat person. They become these huge pieces of cloth instead of looking like actual outfits designed for a human. The pants are also made in way like your legs were as thick as your thighs, so you'll always be walking around with baggy pants like you're some nu-metal drummer. It's hard to look cool when you're fat. I don't even blame the fashion industry. Shape gives style and when you're fat you become this big walking mass like a human blob and everything looks bad on you. I'm working on losing weight now 'cause I'm tired of my clothes just not looking good on me. It's working! I lost 12 Kg in the past 2 months. I'm becoming more self aware regarding the way I dress.
Ok, if you are short but don't have short legs I have found that women tops work great. They are always cut shorter than men pieces. And of course the new unisex models are worth a try.
As a person that have gone through all the season on trends from baggy with pleats, straight cut to comfort from the 550's to the 501's to true religion bell bottoms to the V cut on the side lol the tapered or skinny jeans and the straight cut navy cut twill pants is the trends i love, you may laugh at my comment now but i guarantee when the trends loops back again you'll you will understand my comment lol! and as far as cringing on the clothes you wore back then? u have to realize that was poppin back then and you were just enjoying the trend or ride, unless your Tom Ford, John Paul Gaultier, Yamamoto and lets add Ye to the mix to name a few who goes against the grain and doesn't follow the trends but set the trends you should be proud that u have experience that genre.
I like something, I try it, I love it, come home, and on the 1st try I hate it. I blame fake mirrors in stores. I think I have short legs, and in-store mirrors make them look longer than they are. And it kills my confidence every time. I hate pretty much everything I wear. I think I look best naked tbh ))) wish I had friends that could guide me.
i learned by experience that white shirts and pants dont work for me lol. surprisingly pink works i think, but i like mostly blacks, blues, yellows. i literally just started wearing pink and i think it works compared to most dudes that try it
In my twenties everything looked good on me, in my late 30’s nothing does. The answer is your posture - Mines terrible now. Fix your body posture and you’re laughing.
Yup i hate skinny jeans too. But the point is my boyfriend really likes it, he just confused how to style it well. So if you're gonna make a video on styling skinny jeans in the near future that would be so awesome
Try wearing straight-cut jeans instead of super skinny ones. Or just try cuffing the hem Also, take your shoes into account. The shoes can change your look from casual to polished
I used to buy slightly oversized everything because I'm tall af and can't seem to find anything that fits my height but doesn't also go wider. I also have hyperhydrosis. I never really thought about how it related to how bad my style was until someone pointed it out to me lol
I don’t disagree with anything he says and it might help some people looking for advice. But I personally think that all you need is the confidence part. I wear baggier clothes and but outfits are more of a half and half fit. I think I look good I’m what I wear and some people may not but at the end of the day it’s all up to what you like no matter how the proportions, fits, or anything else fits, if you like it then wear it.
Yes, I cut my own hair here. I’m aware it’s a mess and I didn’t notice whilst recording. At least this isn’t a hair styling video

@@pleasegoawaydude rip 🙏
Think this to myself constantly hahah. Getting into clothing and fashion has done wonders for me in keeping me motivated in dropping weight so I can try and start dressing how I like
Same💯
This is some solid advice! Ive never heard the 2/3’s rule but that is a genuinely helpful thing to start doing!
Gonna be applying this to my fit tomorrow. As always, amazing advice, mate!
Thank you very much
You're really genius in finding topics on your videos Harry. I've learned a lot in this video. And on your past videos. Thank you Harry👍✔️💯
Thanks a lot man. Really appreciate it
There was a bit in the video about matching colors to your skin tone values, which reminded me of other ways-including skin tone-to determine which colors suit you best.
Finally found the video I've been looking for months cause I forgot the title and the channel. But now I'm already subscribed.
I feel you, 5 years ago i cant wear anything other than skin tight jeans, i think people wearing regular jeans looks ridiculous. Now I realized how ridiculous skinny jeans are for males, especially when i looked at my old pics
Honestly, skinny jeans look good if you have nicely shaped legs. Super skinny or super blocky legs isn't gonna be flattering in skin tight jeans
@@lordkars3971slim>skinny
After watching this video, I realized that I should change my style, but will still cycle through the same 5 shirts and 2 pants all the time.
Thanks.
Finally someone who makes sense, thanks mate I learned a lot today
Pleased to hear it mate
This haircut really, really suits you. Great topic btw
Awesome to hear mate. You too
No wonder straight jeans look better on me .. they tend to have a higher rise that gives you the 1.3, 2.3 look .. low rise pants are a big part of the issue .. think shorter shirts (or tucked in) and higher rise pants and you will see
This was much better than I expected, and easy to understand. You, sir, have my like. I'll watch more of your content.
Appreciate it mate. Thank you
This video provided me with a very practical approach to further developing my style. I love the FoG style and it's still my go to, but I would like to venture slightly and attempt the reverse 2/3 proportions as you mentioned.
Also, I really love your hair. Thanks for the dope video, boss.
Just finished watching that wholesome vid of yours about comverse high top... And now you roasted me with that caption wth
Holy shit, I’ve been following you on Instagram for years now, didn’t realize you had a channel. Subscribed.
Fantastic video Harry. Thank you so much. Can't wait to do the skin tone thingy right away!
Keep the good work coming!
Great video! The rule of thirds part was very helpful!
Great to hear. Thank you
saying 'in my opinion', comes across so kind 😘
Silhouette is everything
Yes, if heavy up top, don't wear tight pants it looks out of proportion. Also wearing higher rise pans helps with the rule of thirds
Great content, you’re my new fav fashion youtuber
I like this version of your hairstyle
thank you so much, I don't understand everything quite completely but I feel like I've been awakened.
There's nothing much I can do, I am a short skinny guy every piece of clothing i put on all the same result looks awful. But I never let this drag me to depression and anxiety of life.
I’m sure there is plenty you can do.
start working out

I’m doing my homework for my guy friends to help them with their fashion and this has been the most helpful thus far
Applying those isnt as hard If you get used to it
Hey Harry! I know this is an old video but your hair looks so cool like this
Well, Im definitely trying out the rule of thirds when picking outfits,
i was literally thinking about proportions recently.... spot on
Thanks mate
Never watched a style related video, but this got recommended
What are you saying UA-cam?
I have to get rid of my existing wardrobe and have new clothes for a new style. Good video! 👍
I've seen the lower 1/3 match the upper 1/3, with the middle 1/3 something different - and it worked.
Yes, this is just a guide that normally looks decent. This is not to say you should stick to it 100% of the time. Experiment
Skin tone matters but hair color/beard + in a smaller way the eyes too, also we should consider these "rules" are guidelines and not formal rules :)
Confidence and comfort. Enough said.
i wear black shirt and black/other darker color sweatpants most of the time anywhere i go.
Lol
If I wasn't banned to leave my country, I would like to find you and high five You. Your videos are really useful.
Glad you like the videos.
Thanks a lot mate and really pleased to hear you liked the video
Thank you ,I'll came back when I do that.
You have a beautiful voice Sir Harry
Yup wearing a high rise pants or long top~torso upper clothing looks good on everybody. Too bad high rise pants supply is none here. Straight fit goes well with dad rise pants.
I can’t tell if I genuinely look terrible in something or it’s just my horrible self-esteem 👁👄👁👍
Roy Kent for the win on fashion advice 💪👏
Fit, Function & Fabric.

I love your sincerity and the structure of the video. Thanks Harry and keep em coming!
Thank you mate
I like something, I try it, I love it, come home, and on the 1st try I hate it. I blame fake mirrors in stores. I think I have short legs, and in-store mirrors make them look longer than they are. And it kills my confidence every time.
I hate pretty much everything I wear. I think I look best naked tbh ))) wish I had friends that could guide me.
i learned by experience that white shirts and pants dont work for me lol. surprisingly pink works i think, but i like mostly blacks, blues, yellows. i literally just started wearing pink and i think it works compared to most dudes that try it
Love your haircut!
Well explained and love to watch your content as always. Wish you nothing but the best !
Thank you very much mate!
In my twenties everything looked good on me, in my late 30’s nothing does. The answer is your posture - Mines terrible now. Fix your body posture and you’re laughing.
0:03 not for me, mine is "I want to wear that but i cant afford it" 😂
where can i get that hat on 0:50?
Never heard of the rule of thirds! Thanks!
If you want to look good in anything you wear you need to follow the 3 Fs. Fit - Fabric - Function
Yup i hate skinny jeans too. But the point is my boyfriend really likes it, he just confused how to style it well. So if you're gonna make a video on styling skinny jeans in the near future that would be so awesome
Try wearing straight-cut jeans instead of super skinny ones. Or just try cuffing the hem
Also, take your shoes into account. The shoes can change your look from casual to polished

I used to buy slightly oversized everything because I'm tall af and can't seem to find anything that fits my height but doesn't also go wider. I also have hyperhydrosis. I never really thought about how it related to how bad my style was until someone pointed it out to me lol
Thanks for the advice, I felt out off at first by a lot of things right away that I will definitely try getting used to.
