#Yamoussoukro is the capital city of Côte d'Ivoire, in #WestAfrica. It's inland, northwest of the country’s economic and cultural hub, the coastal city of #Abidjan. It's known for the enormous Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro, with its stained-glass windows and towering dome. The city is the birthplace of 20th-century president Félix Houphouët-Boigny, whose former palace has a crocodile-filled lagoon.

I lived there for 5 years, it is not an abandoned city, the only thing is that it is not overcrowded. If you live there for a long time you start thinking that that's the standard for a city in terms of population density; and feel a bit stressed out when you go to busy cities like Abidjan

There are no buildings on most of the streets.

His vision to develop lthe Ivory coast to the highest standards and make his country the most successful and economically advanced in West Africa was achieved in his Life time.l remember Cote d'Ivoire at the time was so beautiful the jewel of West Africa.Abidjan was petite Paris.Unfortunately after his demise the lvorians became distracted from the vision and were eventually divided with the country descending into civil war.l pray the younger generation uphold Houphouet-Boigny s vision and work towards building and restoring their entire country and make it Beautiful again. The foundation was perfectly laid they just need to restore, build expand ,
Felix Houphouet did not only build a basilica, he also built the best schools in Ivory coast located in Yamoussoukro. For example lycee scientifique and institut polytechnique where all the top engineers in ivory coast have studied.

@@ernestsama5489: Yes, I quite agree with you. Only Biafra, if emerged would have made such a difference because we Igbo Biafrans like diversifications. For example, there is a state called Anambra state, located in the South East of Nigeria which was being rated by a UN body as a one-state-capital. Which means that the developments in the entire state is not centred on the capital city alone, but that it is rapidly spreading across the towns and villages. Unfortunately, we Igbo Biafrans are not loved and welcomed in Nigeria. Nigerians hate us and kill us at will. All the developments in the entire Igbo land are individual based. Even our airports were built by us but Nigerian govt refused to approved any to full international airport. If we want to travel out of Nigeria, we must travel from South East to either Abuja or Lagos to catch our flights, even when we the Igbo Biafrans are the most frequently and widely traveled, not only in Nigeria but in the whole of Africa. This is why we have resolve that we must exit from Nigeria and restore our Biafra Nation for us to move and develop at our own speed. We have suffered so much in Nigeria.

Around 310k in 2014 Population Census. A Census has been done in last year in 2021 but I don't have yet the details
Les autorités ivoiriennes auraient pu ( dû) aider des entreprises à delocaliser d'Abidjan à yakro pour justement désengorger Abidjan trop peuplée pour repeupler Yamoussoukro qui a sûrement besoin Non seulement de voir sa population augmenter mais surtout a besoin d'emplois.
Je ne suis pas d'accord que Yamoussoukro soit la capitale. Cette décision a été prise sous une époque où la démocratie n'existait pas.

I think Ivorian government need to move all their government parastatals to the new capital and enforce all embassies to do so. This is what Nigeria did in the 90s
Yes, it's empty because lots of Government parastatals haven't been moved there.
Nigeria's move was popular with the public, widely supported. This one was a one man show and it was forced. It will never grow because of its location
@@pontianekakoro1737 It was not that easy my friend, even when all government parastatals were forced to move, a lot of the workers are reluctant to go, some were persuaded with accommodation and transportation before they moved. There are afraid to leave their comfort zone and the fear of the unknown, just like any human.

@@AFRICANTIGRESS this city was the village of the first President, he wanted the capital city to be there, he transferred the capital there, unfortunately after his death, the other Presidents didn't continue the project of moving the capital there,. Yes the city is abandoned. You're right, normally all the embassies and administrative building should be transferred there, the government headquarter .... Very sad

Hi African Tigress ! I'm an ivorian. Is Yamoussoukro an abandoned city ? your question is true. Since our 1st President Felix died, the city has been abandoned. It suppose to be our capital but it has never played this role. Only Abidjan plays the role of capital city
There is so much space there..it got Ghanaian Ashanti name. Nigerian should be migrating there to live instead of Ghana to ease down the pressure on Ghana

Yamoussoukro population cannot be compared to Abidjan which is center of most economic activities from era days just similarly to Logos, Nigeria, the most congested in West Africa. I believe that due to failed projects,Yamoussoukro seems more or less an administratively than businesses entity. Camera Video coverage of this adventure is clear viewing.👍🏾
Côte d'Ivoire is its official/actual name. Ivory Coast is just the English translation.

Abidjan remains the economic capital of Cote d"Ivoire while Yamoussoukro serves as the administrative capital. It has also been pointed out by Ivorians in your own previous videos that most administrative services are located in Abidjan and not Yamoussoukro

@@enterpriseerin857 You see, this "city" was the brainchild of Boigny, he forcefully relocated the capital here to develop his village as dictators usually do. The move was very unpopular but nobody could oppose the dictator. When Boigny died, the successive governments stopped funding and supporting the project. However, a lot of public money went to the construction of Yamoussoukro so the current or other governments could not just do away with it so officially it remains the capital but in practice it is not. Remember Gbadolite of Mobutu in the RDC? It's exactly the same case here. At least this one is still in use. Gbadolite is a ghots town

I love to know more about this abandoned city called Yamoussoukro . I am going learn this great expectations from African Tigress touring trip. Political and economical and tribal factors had perceived effects In this “sleepy jungle town” before the traitor first President Felix Boigny in 1983 turned it to a capital state. The city was in fact the village of the first President, he built it and transfer the capital there. But those who came after his death didn't continue his project, they didn't officially bring back the capital city to Abidjan, but they also didn't continue the project of transfer of the capital .

Those in power will develop their area by siteing more projects in their area than the others even those that are useless to that area. Example is Kastina, the president state, the numbers of projects sited within the 8 years of this administration is astronomical. Until each countries have visionary leaders that are not selfish or tribalistic but put the country frist before anybody then we will see a different Africa. Abidjan is the economic capital and Yamoussoukro is the political capital of Ivory Coast so they are both capitals of the country but unfortunately after our first president the others did not develop or help this capital to rise. It is only the actual president that is trying to build more infrastructures and give to Yamoussoukro the capital image it deserves in the coming years. Hoping that he makes it happen as Abidjan is crowded now

Initially when you said: "Je n'ai pas mangé aujourd'hui parce que je ne mange pas" you literally meant" I didn't eat today because I' m not eating ( aka " because I choose not to or I don't want to or I am fasting). Reason why he said apologetically "oh c est bon" and seemed confused when you said it again..I laughed hard. The city is truly well planned and very massive. Their good roads (wide, clean, good street lighting, solidly built, good drainage system, etc) are second to none in the whole of West Africa and some other parts of Africa. I wish they had these kinds of good and wide roads and road network across Nigeria. Unfortunately, many innocent lives have been lost to road accident in Nigeria due to bad roads. Nigerians city planners have a lot to copy from Ivory Coast. Dumez was once a road construction company in Nigeria. What happened to them? Why didn’t they build these kind of wide roads in Nigeria then in the 1970s and 1980s?

The Fula is a minority is even country they are found. In Nigeria, they number less than 10 million. Only in Guinea is the Fula a major group but Guinea is not populated. Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo, the three largest groups in Nigeria/Niger/Benin are the largest "tribes" in West Africa.

The idea behind Yamoussoukro was taken from Brazilia the Capital of Brazil. Rio de Janeiro was too populated so the created a brand new city to transfer the administration to.
That's what inspired Houphouet Boigny. In reality Yamoussoukro became a campus.
The engineering school, the military school for the officers, the school of the magistrates, the scientific high school and many more public and private colleges make yamoussoukro the best place to study in Cote D'IVOIRE

Don't mind the empty aspect of this City. Just praise the fact that the roads are big ,green and clean. Generally Crouded city are noisy and dirty. Indeed it will be the city of the future when the infrastructures will be completed .

the first president did what he could but when he passes we gone through two wars so everything got centralise in Abidjan ,now ABIDJAN IS the capital city. it's sad

The town looks idle, boring and empty yet people are suffocating in Abidjan that hosts almost 25% of the total population in the country

Excellent Layout, great town planning with wonderful roads but I can rarely see great building structures. I think it'll take a very long time for this city to meet up with Abidjan. This is obviously a project for the future..
Similar vision as Abuja but hope this won't turn to a white elephant 🐘 project!

That is Mandingo/ Mandinka music maybe from Senegal / Gambia. They speak little differently from us other madinka ppl. But we are the same ppl.

The city is empty because the president after Felix Houphouet left Yamoussoukro and invest in his town which is located between Yamoussoukro and Bouaké called Daoukro. Also remember industries where not allowed there. The president wanted Yamoussoukro to be a quiet place reserved for administrative work. very large roads to impress foreign presidents.

The reason why Yamoussoukro is like that , Yamoussoukro was not main to be a city , it’s basically the late first president village , he wanted to turn it into a city so he moved the capital from Abidjan to Yamoussoukro then he started the layout of city as you can see the roads are well paved but no infrastructure , unfortunately he passed away before finishing his project, the following presidents did not follow that vision ( I don’t think people were really ok for for the capital to be moved from Abidjan to Yamoussoukro) the city was then left abandoned. But cities like bouake or sanpedro are well developed then Yamoussoukro

As an Ivorian I have always fancied Yamoussoukro as a child. The bottom of all the trees and palm trees along the roads where painted Whites and police officers with motorcade where always driving around. In July in going back to Ivory Coast from England to buy a land in Yakro. People that love partying does not like Yamoussoukro but I I love it
