My first Pokemon game was heart gold. My brother told me that once you catch all of the unown, you unlock a secret room where giratina is. Being 9 years old I believed him, but due to a lack of internet access I had no idea where to catch different letters. I spent so many hours just trying to get all the unown before finally giving up, and I only learned that there was no hidden giratina room when bdsp came out because I finally bothered to google all the letter locations. It took me 11 goddamn years to figure this out.

I think the scariest things about my personal Pokémon mistakes are the ones that I don't even know about. Last year I went through my Pokémon Go Stash to transfer some Pokémon through Pokémon Home...there were 3 shinies that I never remembered catching. Makes me think about all of the Shinies I've passed up because I wasn't paying attention....

I've never failed a Shiny. I'm always VERY careful when one shows up, and I always carry around plenty of Pokeballs in case of randoms.
I have, however, 'lost' a Shiny. My very first one.
I was playing Emerald when it first came out, and since FireRed was my first game, I was not a newbie to things. However, I had never encountered a Shiny before, and didn't even know they existed. As I was grinding near the Daycare, I encountered an Oddish that was a weird color, and it sparkled. As I am essentially a bird and was attracted by the sparkles, I caught the Oddish and put it on my team, naming it Oddie, because I clearly was a creative child. I kept it on my team for the rest of the game, evolving it into a Vileplume, and was always mystified by its weird appearance and the sparkle animation. Through that entire time, my dumbass never figured out that this thing was RARE, and when I was bored one day, I reset the game and lost Oddie, thinking "Oh, I'll just catch another weird Oddish, no big deal".
After Oddie was essentially killed, that was when I learned about Shinies, and yes, it still hurts.

During my Pokemon Y playthrough I found a strange pink sneasel on the snowy route (probably one of my fav pokemon). I fainted it for the precious experience as I wasn't aware of what shiny pokemon were, although it got me intrigued as to why it was pink. A quick google search later and I figured out my mistake :,) Luckily I was able to catch 2 shiny sneasels since then :)

When Red and Blue had first come out, my friend had Red version and I had both. I was playing my Blue Version at his house and we got to talking about it. He told me he was stuck in Cerulean City because he didn’t know he was supposed to leave through the house Team Rocket robs. So he just kept training in the grass north of the city. For a long time. We had a battle and he had a level 68 Charizard just from the wild Pokémon in that area.

In FireRed, I used my master ball to catch a cubone. I had already beaten the elite four but I never encountered a cubone in my playthrough so I really wanted one. After finding out where they are, I went searching in the tower for ~2 hours before I finally encountered one. I then realized that I didn’t have any regular poke balls in my bag and I didn’t want to try to find another cubone so I resorted to the master ball

Not a "mistake" really, but it upset me greatly.
I started replaying Pokemon X recently (this is the first run I intend to finish) and my first encounter on Route 4 was a female Combee. Feeling incredibly lucky to have her, I named her Emily, after Glitter Lucky from Glitter Force. When I got to the Professor's lab, the game crashed, and the last time I saved was right before the Gym.

So I released my favorite Swellow, my SweetieGirl, into the wild so that she could live out a full happy life free. ...She was also the only pokemon I had that had any levels on it, so I had essentially screwed myself for the file. Shiny hunting Ponyta in Alpha Sapphire.
    Catch one.
Play for too long when I have to get to work the next day.
    Come back the next day.
Can't find shiny Ponyta. Can't find other Pokemon I caught after shiny Ponyta.

I think one of the biggest mistakes I made was in my Pokemon Sun game, when I was just starting out on Pokemon games for the first time. I used some rare candies on my Zygarde when it was close to leveling up, because I didn't know at the time that they give the Pokemon the exact amount of EXP they need to level up. I didn't think it would bring it there with the exact amount. I thought it would level it up and have it at the exact amount it was at in the next level. Even worse, I forgot to switch it to the front of my party to get evenly leveled with the others, along with my Flygon. I was wrong.

When I first started playing main-series Pokémon games back in Gen 5, I didn’t know that only “outsider” Pokémon disobeyed when they leveled past the limit for the number of badges you had, so I was always afraid to level up my Pokémon.
I don’t remember when I learned that Pokémon you catch yourself will always obey you (unless it’s Legends: Arceus.) It might have been during Gen 6, it might have been at some point in Gen 7. It was definitely after I beat X&Y. (I bought both for Christmas that year, and I beat Y in only 5 days (with help from one of my older brothers.))

    Here's a shiny fail that happened a while ago, pretty recently;
One day, I was playing with my friend & she asked me for a white-feathered Squawkabilly so she could have all four variants, and because they would never appear for her for some reason. I found one right outside of Artazon and then entered the town, causing it to despawn. Luckily, it wasn't shiny. So after I ended the play session, I decided to make a sandwich to try to get another one to appear for her. I re-entered & re-exited the town over & over again when suddenly a shiny Oricorio had appeared. Since I had a sandwich effect, that meant it wasn't full odds. But then I entered the town and I watched it despawn in front of my eyes. I immediately regretted this for the rest of the night due to that singular black & red bird that I saw exist for half a second or so. I made a promise with my friend that as redemption for the bird that was lost to hatch a new one via Masuda Method. At least I got the white-feathered Squawkabilly she wanted & traded it for a shiny Charcadet she hatched via Masuda Method.
My first shiny fail was a Shedinja in Shield. I entered a random Shedinja raid, and it was a shiny. Once I defeated it, I caught it... and it escaped the Poké Ball I threw at it & ran away to somewhere else in the den. Thank goodness that can't possibly happen in Tera raids, now that they have a 100% catch rate in those.
Funnily enough, it wasn't until she got the white-feathered Squawkabilly that said Pokémon variant started spawning for her in her game. How random.

Couple of days late, but storytime pokemon related. Note that it is not much of a mistake, but something that still hurts me to this day. I got Pokemon HeartGold for Christmas when it was released. I made so many memories with that cartridge. My beloved Typhlosion, TinyDancer. Yes, I named my starter that cause Cyndaquill is adorable. Even catching my first full odds shiny, which was a rattata I stumbled upon when getting to the next town. I was nearing the elite 4 when *the incident* happened. I was punished for having bad grades, so I told my younger brother and sister to help level up my team but do not enter the league cause I wanted to beat the game first. Fast forward to me getting ungrounded, and I asked my brother and sister to give me back my game.
"I'm so sorry, CND, but we misplaced the cartridge."
That sentence haunts me to this very day. My HeartGold game has never seen the light of day since then. I never finished the game, and I lost my shiny rattata in the process.

My biggest mistake in Pokemon was when I deleted a Sapphire save file to do a new playthrough, purposely deleting a Shiny Golbat. First legit shiny, GS Gyarados aside.
LG!Eevee allowed me to redeem myself, but the scars are still there.

Not really a mistake, just a sad moment. In Pokemon HeartGold, literally at the very first patch of grass and the beginning (I didn't have any pokeballs with me, and I'm pretty sure you can't get any at that stage), I encountered a shiny Pidgey. I ran and was absolutely depressed.

i didn't get to the twitter in time but the dex entry for lapras said that they were endangered, so i bred over 1000 competitive lapras with 27 being shiny. then i released all of them into the wild so that they weren't endangered anymore. in pokemon emerald i used a shedinja, but the dex entry says whoever looks at its back dies, so i shut down my game and reset for fear of the player character dying on the spot. my starter and aggron were shiny.

Confession time: in a Pokemon FireRed Nuzlocke attempt, I caught a level 3 Metapod that only knew Harden. Not knowing that I could switch in my starter if things got dicy and still receive exp for the Metapod, I foolishly believed the anime and believed that Harden was an unconventionally useful move, so I used Harden on my opponent. RIP Metapod. RIP my one encounter in Viridian Forest. RIP my Bulbasaur and that attempt of mine, because the poor thing was on its last legs and lost to a rival battle.
I went full on rage mode afterwards and took out my frustrations on Brock (*cough*Bulbasaur*cough* *cough*Leech Seed*cough* *cough*Vine Whip*cough*)

My first ever shiny fail (that I can recall) was a shiny female Psyduck in Diamond. I didn’t know about shinies at the time, and I was doing an unofficial ‘male only run’, so I ran from it. One of my friends told me about shinies afterwards, and let’s just say I feel embarrassed for my younger self.

Thankfully I’ve never failed a shiny, but I do have 2 mistakes and 1 misconception.
My first time with a main series Pokémon game was White when I was 10. I chose Oshawott and at the lab when Juniper asks if you want to nickname your Pokémon I accidentally clicked yes, and I didn’t know you could hit OK and it’d cancel so thought I could just name it its species and the game would think it didn’t have a nickname… I also didn’t know how to go lowercase. Guess who beat the game with an “OSHAWOTT”?
Same game, same save, I had just gotten to route 10 and encountered a Bouffalant for the first time. That thing took every Pokéball I had (and I had a ton of Ultra Balls) so out of desperation I used the Master Ball on it. Quickly realizing my mistake, I bolted to the Opelucid Pokémon Center’s PC thinking if I released the Bouffalant then I could get the ball back. It was a slow sad walk back to route 10 to catch another Bouffalant…
Way back, before I got into the main series, part of my main experience with the series was collecting the cards because I really liked the art. One night I asked my dad what HP meant. My dad, who works with lots of machinery, told me it meant “horse power”. So I went a good many years thinking the HP stat is what determined a Pokémon’s overall strength, because in my mind, that meant it was as strong as that many horses.

My second mistake happened today while playing PLA found a full odds shiny basculin but joycon drift messed me up bad and spun me around making me run into the shiny whom was a Timid and he ran away 😭

When I first started Pokémon and was ignorant and unaware, I played through Pokémon X up until that field after that weird forest where you could encounter Zoroark. I had only ever seen the Pokémon in the anime and never before that. So I the first time I saw that Pokémon in the grass I thought it was a super rare and powerful Pokémon. I proceeded to through my master ball it and catch. It wasn’t until moments later after I encountered another Zoroark that I realized the gravity of my mistake.

When I was 8, I found a shiny Floatzel in Pokémon Diamond while working to complete the Pokédex. I was at school eating lunch with my friends, when I asked them why that Floatzel was a different color and sparkly. I had never seen a shiny Pokémon before and neither have them because they told me it had to be Darkrai disguised as a different colored Floatzel. I tried catching it because I really wanted a Darkrai because I thought it was a super cool Pokémon. However, because I was working on completing my Pokédex I used up a lot of the Pokéballs I had. I ran out of Pokéballs and had to kill that Floatzel. I did make up for that loss in Brilliant Diamond and Legends Arceus.

I didn't see the tweet so here's my worst fail. I became champion in pokemon sun, came to the point in alpine saphire where you try to catch kyogre and had just beaten in pokemon pearl crasher wake, but when I was playing alpine saphire and trying to catch kyogre my dad called me to come down and I slipped on the stairs and my 3DS fell. It has been broken ever since.

Also the original pokemon Pearl was first ever pokemon game, but since I bought it with my grandma in germany it was soft locked to only be in german. So I choose the cutest/coolest pokemon I saw and I choose moves by names, colors and numbers. Which led me into once getting a magikarp, but I missread it for shellos's germany and I released it. But I wasn't allowed to go back and get one.

I really hated one part where you had to find a key to get out of a city, but the key was so hard to find that my mom searched it up and said it was in front of the building on the pathway. So I spam clicked A to find an invisable key.

I caught 4 Pokemon with Pokerus in Pokemon Shield and was Post Game, ran into a shiny Bounsweet, realized I could have farmed the Shield Legendary Pokemon as a shiny, I reset the entire save, redid the entire game, tried to farm the Zamazenta for about 200 attempts, then I asked my mom for her phone so I could see if it was shiny locked, and wouldn't you know it, it was. I also took the time to look up what Pokerus is, and it turns out that was a 1/21,845 chance, and a shiny was only a 1/4096 chance. I became so traumatized that I purposely went out of my way to catch every pokemon I ran into just incase it had Pokerus again. Not one did to this day.

Some of my stupidest mistakes in Pokemon
    - I got stuck in the ice cave in Gold pretty much forever. Eventually when I did get through, I missed the Waterfall HM and proceeded to get stuck on Victory Road. I never finished the game because of that.
    - I caught a shiny Zigzagoon without realizing it in Sapphire. I noticed later on that one of my Zigzagoons was a little different in color from the first and I wasn't sure why because I didn't know about shinies yet. Eventually restarted the game, and I didn't know about transferring Pokemon or how to do it, so I probably would have even if I knew what I had. It was my first shiny.
    - I stupidly allowed my little brother to play my Red or Yellow game with the sole stipulation that he not save the game. Got the game back from him and my Pidgeot was gone. Nowhere in the boxes and not in my team. He somehow released it and then saved afterward. I was so mad.
    - It took me until gen 7 to realize how good Quick Balls were. I basically only ever used regular, Great and Ultra before that.
    - It took me until the final Volo battle in Legends Arceus to figure out how to use items in battle. I did not figure it out until after several attempts.
