I get a kick of the term overlanding. Back in the day we called it a camping trip. We stuffed our tents, sleeping bags, camp stove and ice chest in our rigs and went traveling the back country. We did not have the fancy stuff that they use now. So if you can stuff basic camp gear in the liberty then you have a overlanding rig. You have my votes
@@billjcanada should have witnessed our 1969 travels back in the day.. station wagon... Rooftop storage made of plywood. A 55 Chevy truck bed trailer. We were styling! Drive all around the State of Nevada. Hmmm. Did Dad have a warrant out for him?
Over-landing aka camping. Options: 1. Just take a tent or tent cot. 2. Throw a pad or air mattress in the back. 3. Get one of those tents that mate up to the car. 4. A bit more risky but take a hammock. Only need to find one tree/post/ etc and tie other end to jeep. Lots of pack away options that aren’t permanent to the jeep makes it so easy to
Will be a very interesting build About your plasma cutter 1 doses it have a expanded metal switch if it does turn it off 2 low air pressure will stop it or cause it to turn off 3 dirty tip or burnt insert The main problem with this or case of it is moisture in your air system Plasma cutters need very dry air and lots of it And don’t know if your vendor has told you but they make gouging tips for your machine and they are great for removing welds
I actually still have the Jeep tent that came with our 2003 Liberty. It has an opening that fits over the back of the jeep. You open up the hatch and rear door and have access to the Jeep interior. Pretty awesome! It came with a mountain bike too.
There’s just something to happy about them. And they are so simple underneath. Cant wait to share the progress from these last few days with you guys!!
Another reason to switch to solid axel is cost. by the time you by something that is durable enough to handle the punishment of off road, (especially with large tires), you would be surprised how much you spend. With a budget of only $20,000, the money would be eaten up QUICK. Plus, a solid axel has a lot less stress points for something to go wrong on the trail with factory suspension.
Honestly, I know very little about how to build any type of 4 wheeler. But if I didn't live about 100 million miles away, I'd love to learn. I've done some repairs and upgrades back in the day. But nothing like what you and the others do. Mostly just replacing parts. I really dig this stuff and your videos. Thank you for them.✌👍
Good morning Hollie I love the fact that you are sticking with building what you know that is very smart. I also think that you thinking about the fact you want to use it after the On X build challenge is a great thing. Building something just for the on X build challenge is kind of foolish because if you are putting time and money in it you should be able to use it whenever you want
To bad I don't have my overlander trailer that took me 2 years to build. It had a solar power fridge with panels on the roof and enough battery power to light up trailer. It had a stove and oven, a sink with 25 gallon fresh water with a 12 v RV water pump. It had awning that pivoted from the side to the back. I had water filtration so if you found a stream or lake you could get clean water to drink. The trailer triangle going to the hitch had a smoker/ grill first time taken it out I smoked a brisket. It was decked out with a lot more things to name everything. But the first day I took it out I had another overlander following me because of smoking meat smell. He found me as I was setting up camp which took 20 minutes. I invited to camp nearby and have dinner with use. When they got set up the brought a bottle of whiskey over as cellibration. Before the night got to late he was asking if I wanted to sell it he said you just name the price. I just sold it to him I told him with my time and price of everything of I bought for it $15,000.00. He said that is way to low and said he would pay $35,000. He just sent pics from Colorado, New Mexico, and he is in route to Utah next. He has had 4 people offer $35,000.00 or more for it and wanted one but he wouldn't sell it. I sold it in February but I would have held off selling it to lease it to you for your trip really cheap. I have started to redesign another one for me but the next one I'm not selling this time. I have thought about getting some one to help build a few of them down the road. I modeled it simular to some that I have seen made in Australia. They only had 35's on it but where I like to go I need 40's. I have been working on a Idea that had about taking a generator and mounting it to the axle with hydraulic steering. So it will be a power plant and electric hydraulic steering. I use to put a box in the back over my truck and put on a table. It was like a chuckwagon box it would hold 4 to 5 days of food. That could work for you maybe and not that expensive to make. You want I can make you some Dutch oven spacers which could use to cook most stuff buy coals. If you need help learning how to cook in a Dutch oven watch Kent Rollins on UA-cam he is a cowboy cook. I hope I could give you some Ideas for your overlanding.
Hollie, look into a tool called a Pipe or Tube Sander Attachment. It attaches to an angle grinder. We use it a lot for tube cleanup (pre-weld/pre-paint prep) or axle prep as you're doing. It's a nifty way to sand down to polished tube, and I find it pretty easy to handle.
Cool on the SAS Liberty with D44s. In comparison to a stock form of IFS to solid basic axle (D30), the straight axle will out perform a factory IFS all day. Factory IFS is designed for street handling comfort, not wheeling by any means. Thus the straight axle is more cumbersome on the street but comes alive at slow crawling. As for a SAS Liberty, there is LOST forum that has plenty, then there was BDS Suspension did one on a diesel Liberty for UA2015, 37s, D44s, frame stiffners, etc.

I have added a pressure regulator/water separator on my plasma cutter cart. When hooking up the air I can see if the pressure is right and it keeps most of the water out of the cutter.
if you would get a Corded (no Cordless, battery) 7 inch Right Angle Grinder with a Grinding Disc you can remove the majority of the material and if you need the super smooth finish you could finish it with your Cordless with a flap disc, you would have got both axles done in one day, if you select the right tool for the right job it's amazing what you can get done, keep up the good work love the channel 👍
You need to invest in what's called a Scarfing tip for your cutting torch. They will let you get really close to the weld that you are trying to remove. And if it's done right there is minimal grinding to be done.
Doing well! Thank you so much for asking. I still do specific exercises and stretches for my back, but I am fully healed at this point and enjoying my time in the garage again.
The liberty is identical to the one my wife has. My daughter wrecked it a while back. I fixed it the best I could but now the motor is going :( She loved that Jeep...
You've seen my rig,🎉 all you need is an air mattress in the back a power station a cooler and a small camp stove and you're set to do overlanding and that could be put in the back of that liberty quite nicely. 🎉
Overlanding is just multiple days of wheeling. I can manage sleeping on the ground for a night or 2. I could take MischiefMaker overlanding if I really wanted to…people have some romantic notion about taking every single modern convenience offroad with them. I’m the person who shows up with a few sandwiches from the gas station and a cooler filled with ice and some sodas. 😅
One more thing to consider for your build. When the Jeep Liberty was sold, one of the optional Mopar features was a tent that perfectly fit the back. Google Jeep Liberty OEM Tent. The thing was HUGE! You may have seen them for XJs as well. If you could find the OEM tent, that could be a solution to making it an overlander. Use it for the Challenge, then tuck it in a corner of the shop afterward to get it out of your way. Maybe one of your subscribers has one they aren't using. I'm sorry I don't have one to send you, despite having the two KJs. Of course, the lift might make things angle a bit differently, but I know you will figure that out.

"I will never go on a weekend long trip". I really don't understand that mentality. You are missing so many of the good bits of America by only wheeling in 4WD parks on half-day trails.
You ask bad decision? Some dudes here in Az built a Rock Crawler out of one of those in their garage. It required building a frame that followed the contour of the unibody. It did use a fuel cell. Looked like it was doing some buggy level trails to me. They did post maybe Facebook or UA-cam? 🙄
But if slapped a 3500/2500 sub frame with clip (arms and axles , rack too).. if can take a Corolla , slap a 2 350 rear sub and let it ride !! I’m sure a stub 2500-3500 could widen the track and maybe some positives . But I’m always a solid axle guy 1 But then the little voices in my head say function over cost derives from being creative and boundaries are not for the weak 🥃👊🏻🤩! This build will be awesome! I’d just put a hearty skid plate though , lift little higher , droop longer and use the time for other stuff 🤷♀️. Sometimes them hefty skid plates are a blessing
@@Dirtyrpide4life GM still uses torsion bars though which have very little suspension travel, and they are single rate with no tunability. So while a 2500 front would be strong enough, it wouldn’t offer any real advantage over a solid axle.
The whistle doesn't bother me it's the playing music. I have a hearing problem, and the music just muddy's your voice. Please keep this in mind when editing your talking points. Hollie, keep up the great work. Please be safe in and out of your shop during your adventures.

Some people do hells gate , I do it with open diffs and an iron rock stock axles zj. Love y’all channels and excited to see more!! 🇺🇸👍🏻👊🏻
Glad your honest. think various others are going your route... but not saying it. (aka- little to no "overlanding" element to the rigs). IMHO everyone not really putting "overlanding" into the build need to withdraw. The contest was stated to have a level of "overlanding" so withdraw and let in some folk into the game who will go that route. Guess what needs to happen is Ian clearly define overlanding rigs...... what items MUST be in the rig and realistically usable that will make it an overlander. Water storage, toilet, bathing means, full camping kitchen, food storage and fridge, full sleeping bed not just a ruff fluff pad and cheap sleeping bag.. things like that. If Ian is way more off-road rig leaning in this consted.... and NOT so much overlanding..... then change the name of the contest to "4x4 and ruff it camping" or something like that
We are going on an overlanding trip to close out the competition, but they didn’t say we had to build overland rigs. All you can really expect from the contestants is for us to follow the rules. If enough people share their feedback, hopefully they will be specific on the rules as you suggested above.
am watching the Talk with Ian.... apparently this year there is less of "overlanding" than last year. (didn't even know there was that element "required" last year) ... soooooooo that answers that.. so appears everyone gets to build on moslty skiping the overlanding stuffis.
You’d think so, but wranglers don’t seem to have much trouble…so who knows 😅. Also, this little one won’t be my extreme offroad rig. I’ll leave that to MM (which still has a stock gas tank) and the Scottish Hammer. With these toothpick diameter Dana44s, a wheelbase that will sit around 108” and a crawl ratio that’s about 35…the Liberty won’t be equipped for the nasty stuff, but will be a ton of fun & plenty capable with a skilled driver 😜
Question Hollie,if your not building an Overlander isn't that breaking the rules of the contest? Because everybody else is building an Overlander. Just asking,I'm curious to hear what Ian says. Thanks for the video 👋
We have to build a vehicle and take it ovelanding. The rules don’t state what we have to build and only Robby is building areal overlanding vehicle. I only build things that have a purpose and will get used often.
No, I think a lot of people think the same thing. And to be fair, I think the competition did start out as an overland build challenge (during the planning stages back in November), but then things changed (tire size restriction removed, etc…) and by the time this program actually kicked off in March the rules were fairly generic.
Do a tent off the back hatch. Put a roof rack on it to carry your camping supplies that you can't fit inside the vehicle. Propane camping stove and lanterns. Sleeping bag and a cooler for you food.
I like simple and that is pretty close the what I’ll be doing. A tent, sleeping bag and a jetboil is pretty much all I need and I’ll be fine for a 3-4 days of adventure.
No partner this year. I wanted to build this one mostly myself with limited help from a few friends now that I’m much more comfortable with the process. 😁
Tbf as much as I do agree solid is the way to go here and definitely has its advantages, you also see Rory recovering rigs with solid axle failures. It's all a matter of engineering, you see rigs participating in king of the hammers on IFS no issue despite how punishing that is, because they're engineered for it. Of course a lot of vehicles have skimped. But take a discovery 3. They do have some issues with air suspension system failure (which isn't really a solid Vs ifs issue) and engine reliability. But with a 2" lift, they go anywhere on full independent suspension no problem, any day of the week. Albeit their cross link system helps a lot.
It looks like I’m going to end up cutting most (if not all) of that out anyway, but there are definitely areas that I plan to reinforce since they were bent in and then pulled on a frame machine. I can still see the creases from where certain areas were bent. I’ll definitely show more detail as I make those changes to the front end.
HEY, B-FULL GIRL, WHERE DO YOU KEEP WALTER LOCKED UP? WE DON'T SEE HIM VERY OFTEN. HOPE HE IS STILL ON YOUR GOOD SIDE. MUCH LOVE FROM THE OLD VET IN CENTRAL. GET THEM TO FIX YOUR ROOF. 😇😘😘😘
Hay Michael Kevin from light bright is going to build 5 liberty Jeeps you out to reach out to him and invite him to help with your project oh don't forget to invite Brittany. Maybe they could get ideas for there build. Anyway it's just an idea. Oh if you don't know how to get in touch I think Matt might be able to help you get in with him oh good luck with your build.
They aren’t building theirs. They are going to use them pretty much stock and t off the parts I’ve ripped off will be going to them so they have spares. I’m actually hoping to buy 1 of their rigs when they are done with them. Never hurts to have a spare drive train 😀
Agreed, either 392 or Mojave…but there’s plenty of room in the budget. I like the high steer steel knuckles from Reid, but the Curry high steer steel knuckles are like $150 cheaper, so that’s what I’m going with.
Pushing the stock tank up through the floor makes total sense and also saves money on the budget. A tent, inflatable matress, camp stove, folding table and chairs should meet the requirements. Only Robby is building a hotel on wheels, what a waste.
my thoughts during this video, in no particular order: skid plate the stock tank, if it ain't broke don't fix it. is the air pressure too low? why is she even using the plasma on an axle, the oxy torch is by far the best tool for axles? any car that can take you a cooler and a sleeping bag down "rough" roads is an overlander, I know several people that overland air cooled beetles. while this is probably the easiest, most useable, and most relatable build in this challenge it doesn't excite me as much as the pacer or the mini. nates truck will be functional, ugly, but will out live everything, the jag is so hacked together its going to be a battle just to keep it driving, the bread truck is already too big and top heavy, and they're lifting it and installing cabinets up high, which could get entertaining. oh her air pressure is too high.
I would love to vote again daily, like I was before they decided I couldn't vote without giving them $$$. I heard they reset it all, but I can't get to the voting page anymore. No free votes, sorry to say. I don't need OnX, so not going to pay to vote.
Haha! Have you watched everyone else’s channels. I might have 4 people help (not all at once) and a total of 15 days of their time. I am 100% confident I will have built more of my rig than any other channel. 🤣🤣

EXACTLY .. let's be honest you don't even know how to hold or use the tools properly let alone do a quality build .. Not tying to be mean but I am trying to be HONEST .. Ground is not fully grounded. If you have a water seperater, drain it. Check all connects. Plasma should be good to go.
Thank you
"I will never go on a weekend long trip". I really don't understand that mentality. You are missing so many of the good bits of America by only wheeling in 4WD parks on half-day trails.
What do you have against a cutting torch?
What is that cart you have the axles on? Homemade or bought? Nifty idea.
DIY 😎
There's also more points of failure with IFS.
You still can make this an overlandish build.Just make the camping part of it removable.
I’ve seen their video and the rig looked great! 😊
A GOOD IFS setup is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than a junk yard axle. It would be your entire budget to get a durable IFS under that.
Definitely! A decent IFS setup with any real travel that can handle 37s is almost always custom and super expensive.
But if slapped a 3500/2500 sub frame with clip (arms and axles , rack too).. if can take a Corolla , slap a 2
350 rear sub and let it ride !! I’m sure a stub 2500-3500 could widen the track and maybe some positives .
But I’m always a solid axle guy 1
But then the little voices in my head say function over cost derives from being creative and boundaries are not for the weak 🥃👊🏻🤩!
This build will be awesome! I’d just put a hearty skid plate though , lift little higher , droop longer and use the time for other stuff 🤷♀️. Sometimes them hefty skid plates are a blessing
@@Dirtyrpide4life I actually think I can put a flat belly on this bad boy…but yes, I am throwing in a pretty hefty skid plate 😀
@@Dirtyrpide4life GM still uses torsion bars though which have very little suspension travel, and they are single rate with no tunability. So while a 2500 front would be strong enough, it wouldn’t offer any real advantage over a solid axle.
Nice work, I really like jeeps. I want to buy one?
What is the date these vehicles have to be completed by?
By the time we leave for the group trip in October. I should have this one running in early September.
The whistle doesn't bother me it's the playing music.
I have a hearing problem, and the music just muddy's your voice.
Please keep this in mind when editing your talking points.
Hollie, keep up the great work.
Please be safe in and out of your shop during your adventures.
I agree on not wanting to hear music added to videos. Mostly I mute the sound or skip ahead to get past it. Sometimes I give up on a video entirely.
You need a wrench hand I’m in Slc willing to transplant . I ain’t a pro , but I can probably stack dimes worthy and a wealth of passion from sprint cars , derby , 4x4 , Rv shops , auto body and paint and car hauler cdl A . Some people do hells gate , I do it with open diffs and an iron rock stock axles zj.
Love y’all channels and excited to see more!! 🇺🇸👍🏻👊🏻
Ah ha 💡 moment 🤭, Should’ve called Walter to finish it, But you got the job done 👍…
Walter has a job and this is mine 😂 if I can't do things I'm supposed to be able to do I should look into something else 😂😂😂
You should just be lacing off all your brackets with your plasma cutter
Sounds like your plasma cutter wasn't grounded good enough.
Go with your guts. 9 out of 10 times it's right 😊
Doesn't the gas tank need a baffle for extreme off-road!
Nahh. No stock tank has them. And other then genright I don't know any other fuel cell tanks for a jeep that have them.
@@MischiefMakerTV Thank you for the reply my mistake.
No, I think a lot of people think the same thing. And to be fair, I think the competition did start out as an overland build challenge (during the planning stages back in November), but then things changed (tire size restriction removed, etc…) and by the time this program actually kicked off in March the rules were fairly generic.
Put new tank straps on as they look a little old
Holly, did you and Walter move here to Utah
Not officially, but soon. This is where we want to settle down.
@@MischiefMakerTVWho is your partner on this adventure?
No partner this year. I wanted to build this one mostly myself with limited help from a few friends now that I’m much more comfortable with the process. 😁
Examples can be found on IFS breaking on Trailmaters Channel.. lol
No need to explain why you want solid axles. We are armchair watchers of your build. Hoping you get to go to the onx challenge.
What’s the plan on the front end dmg?
It looks like I’m going to end up cutting most (if not all) of that out anyway, but there are definitely areas that I plan to reinforce since they were bent in and then pulled on a frame machine. I can still see the creases from where certain areas were bent. I’ll definitely show more detail as I make those changes to the front end.
@MischiefMakerTV Awesome cannot wait to see the progression.. I was wondering if it being pushed in would cause you issues during the build..
👍
HEY, B-FULL GIRL, WHERE DO YOU KEEP WALTER LOCKED UP? WE DON'T SEE HIM VERY OFTEN. HOPE HE IS STILL ON YOUR GOOD SIDE. MUCH LOVE FROM THE OLD VET IN CENTRAL. GET THEM TO FIX YOUR ROOF. 😇😘😘😘
Why did you not just use a blue wrench ... AKA Torch
Sparks flying and bare knees, what could go wrong????
Only catching 1 in a shoe.
Scars left arm one night welding derby cars short sleeve (no scars before 15 years ). Y’all keep them long sleeves and leathers on 👍🏻
Oh good.
Arent you going to have to sleep in your rig for part of the challenge?
A good old tent and sleeping bag will do 😎
All you have to do is add a roof top tent and boom it's an overlander.... not that hard
Why don't you wear respiratory protection when you're doing all that grinding ? The dust is so unhealthy.
It's too bad that you couldn't get 392 axles so that you'd have steel knuckles
Agreed, either 392 or Mojave…but there’s plenty of room in the budget. I like the high steer steel knuckles from Reid, but the Curry high steer steel knuckles are like $150 cheaper, so that’s what I’m going with.
Pushing the stock tank up through the floor makes total sense and also saves money on the budget. A tent, inflatable matress, camp stove, folding table and chairs should meet the requirements. Only Robby is building a hotel on wheels, what a waste.
Yes, that would be a huge savings. The SFI-rated fuel cell I had planned was almost 10% of what I’m spending in total 😳.
It's only a bad idea if it doesn't work.
Walker Barbara Martinez Nancy Garcia Thomas
my thoughts during this video, in no particular order: skid plate the stock tank, if it ain't broke don't fix it. is the air pressure too low? why is she even using the plasma on an axle, the oxy torch is by far the best tool for axles? any car that can take you a cooler and a sleeping bag down "rough" roads is an overlander, I know several people that overland air cooled beetles. while this is probably the easiest, most useable, and most relatable build in this challenge it doesn't excite me as much as the pacer or the mini. nates truck will be functional, ugly, but will out live everything, the jag is so hacked together its going to be a battle just to keep it driving, the bread truck is already too big and top heavy, and they're lifting it and installing cabinets up high, which could get entertaining. oh her air pressure is too high.
I would love to vote again daily, like I was before they decided I couldn't vote without giving them $$$. I heard they reset it all, but I can't get to the voting page anymore. No free votes, sorry to say. I don't need OnX, so not going to pay to vote.
It’s back to free last I checked (which was yesterday!)
@@MischiefMakerTV Thanks Hollie! I will check again. thank you!!
@@periwinkle-dragonfly no thank you so much for voting! 😀💙💙

if your not meeting the build requirements I am betting you will be disqualified and sadly you should be.

Talk less work more
Do you always talk this much and slow in your videos? (Asked in a respectful manner and out of interest.)
Listening to the Grindr is not entertaining!!!!
I thought the point of this challenge was that you’re supposed to build it, not have other people come build it for you?
Haha! Have you watched everyone else’s channels. I might have 4 people help (not all at once) and a total of 15 days of their time. I am 100% confident I will have built more of my rig than any other channel. 🤣🤣
Come on Grant ... we all know she can't build a rig .. im not even sure why she would be in a challenge like this other than for being on utoob with some of the friends she has made that can build a rig .. she doesn't build or repair her own rig she paid others to do it and still does .. when her stuff breaks out on the trail have you seen her fix it or other people .. EXACTLY .. let's be honest you don't even know how to hold or use the tools properly let alone do a quality build .. Not tying to be mean but I am trying to be HONEST .. I think she is a nice person (on camera) who is WAAAAY over her head
@@GrumpysGarageDave haha! Thank you for watching and commenting. Funny how you would say that to the only person who doesn’t have a full time helper and or employees literally building their rig in this competition 🤣🤣
@MischiefMakerTV I didn't say it because you have a helper or employees or not .. I said it because it's the truth .. ive seen you around the utoob offload community and I've watched some of your videos including you going to offroad driving class .. I am speaking from what I have SEEN over a period of years ..hell even in this video your using the wrong tool or using them improperly .. the skills and knowledge that it takes to actually build a rig doesnt happen overnight or by accident .. it's skills that some people have spent their whole lives working on and perfecting .. Let's be honest
Whatever you say. I started welding less than 2 years ago and I’m thrilled with where I’m at in terms of skill and if you care about tools getting used properly, you can’t be much of a fan of anyone I know because I’m learning from everyone in this competition and creative problem solving and getting the job done is just part of it…
Either way, I appreciate your feedback. 😊🤙🏻
I don't understand why you are in the challenge if your not going to build it for the challenge! It makes no since to join in a challenge and and not do what's supposed to be accomplished.
It seems everyone else is doing the same
@@MischiefMakerTV Exactly. No one is sleeping in the mini or the pacer =D. Some of the builds look like they'll possibly be "real" overlanding (as the term is taken to mean these days), but many are just cool builds like liberty biberty =D
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll sleep in the drivers seat if that makes everyone feel better 🤣
@@MischiefMakerTV people that haven’t slept facing uphill don’t recognize it’s comfortable and y’all can see the stars if your on a mountain side hahah
They need to change it to rock crawler no one wants to have to have a over price overlander set up
To much talking 👄 👎👎👎
Hope you can make enough money off this to be able to buy new pants not Form Goodwill that has holes in them.
Can’t wear my ‘going out’ pants at the shop 😂. When you are at the shop, you wear shop pants…
