An Infrared light-emitting diode (IR LED) is a special-purpose LED that emits infrared rays ranging from 700 nm to 1 mm wavelength.
A photodiode is a PN-junction diode that consumes light energy to produce an electric current.

You must have to use Photo Diode. It works on LED as well, but you will see the visible light, therefore it’s good to use IR LED instead.
