"All The World Is Green" by Tom Waits from the album 'Blood Money'
Lyrics
I fell into the ocean
When you became my wife
I risked it all against the sea
To have a better life
Marie you're the wild blue sky
And men do foolish things
You turn kings into beggars
And beggars into kings
Pretend that you owe me nothing
And all the world is green
We can bring back the old
days again
And all the world is green
The face forgives the mirror
The worm forgives the plow
The questions begs the answer
Can you forgive me somehow
Maybe when our story's over
We'll go where it's always spring
The band is playing our song again
And all the world is green
Pretend that you owe me nothing
And all the world is green
We can bring back the old
days again
And all the world is green
The moon is yellow silver
Oh the things that summer brings
It's a love you'd kill for
And all the world is green
He is balancing a diamond
On a blade of grass
The dew will settle on our grave
When all the world is green

The face forgives the mirror
The worm forgives the plow
I mean...jesus H christ on a bike...who comes up with stuff like that...I love this guy. He kept me going in difficult times...I'll always be grateful.
"The Worm Forgives the Plow".. is from a poem by William Blake. Just shows how well read and deep Mr. Waits truly is!
He's saving me now as you :)
& yet the very Author of them both declares!
“Every living thing comes from & returns back into... His Ever Changing Dirt.
Yet in between those two times; Are they not fashioned by His Will, His Light, & His Life Giving Waters?
~Just A-Wait-ing His Just Return 1122
@@Viridisdaemonis in one of his songs he has a line "before the ocean was blue" and in ancient Greece they didn't have a specific word for blue. Tom waits uses a lot of literature in his works.
@@thequietk1 Incredible. I never noticed that reference but I know the Greeks didn't have a word for the color of the ocean. Thanks!
The old days are gone, 😭 and nothing can bring them back.
This song particulary and the whole album too made me fall in love for Tom Waits....
Ačiū!!
A good place to hide or to be.
"Maybe when our story is over, we go where it's always spring"

Share this one with the next person who says Tom Waits can't sing.
Tom Waits ist one of the best musician of the world, the Last genious of popular music ofcourse he knows singing! Even without voice ...
"Alice" is one of the finest vocal performances ever
Waits is better than Sinatra
With a voice like a rusty gate smoked a pack of cigarettes. In all the best ways
Yessss brother, yes!
That's some real poetry, there.
This man gives me life with his words.
I agree. If I a little down, I listen to Tom Waits and I brighten up. I can't be depressed when there is a genius like him in the world.
Tom Waits for no man. Seasons change because Tom Waits tells them to.
@@corbingregory4970 I wonder if he's heard that one? 🤣 l love it.
you guys are fucking beautiful :)
Heard this song in the Tom Robbins film, The Secret Life of Words. It took my breath away.

Painting with words. Lovely.
What a song. Wow. My go to tune for deep regret. Just the best. Bless you, Tom.
hes balancing a diamond on a blade of grass.
yes.
One of my least favorite exes introduced me to Tom. At twenty-one it was a relatively mind-blowing experience.
Thankfully years later this album is in the Library of Congress and only she has HPV.
"One of my least favorite exes" I love it. perfect.
A day without him is a lost day ...
Certainly👍
Every year the trees take on a haze of color. The grass brightens up and it's medicine for my soul. Then it's time to sing this song again.
I’ve been in love with Tom waits since seeing the robots movie as a kid. Such an amazing voice
I think that's how a good chunk of people ended up here, I'm not complaining tho.
@@Delos_Shoe Y'all are youngsters! I started listening to him in college during the 90s.
@@davidmonroe4780 I get you, but most people on the internet only know Tom Waits for Underground. Don't get me wrong it's really cool you use to listen to him before I could even say my ABC's
@@davidmonroe4780I’m 17, I must’ve found him about a year ago, currently - this song, a good man is hard to find, martha and dead and lovely are my favourite songs.
Sunday music mood.
Perfect
More than perfect. :)
i'm digging this album pretty hard
heart breaking
I always thought it was “the worm forgives the cloud”
meaning something like; why did you make it rain?
only to make me come out to die by a bird in the sky?
time flies in the summer sun, forever son.
The Blood Money album goes to an avant-garde adaptation of the play "Woyzeck" (which was also adapted into an opera by Alban Berg). In the play, this song is a duet between Woyzeck and his wife Marie, who has cheated on him. I haven't seen the play (the only footage I've seen of it are clips on a promo video with Tom Waits and Robert Wilson, the director), but I have seen the Berg opera, and if I had to guess, this song may be portraying Woyzeck and Marie's attempt to reconcile with one another; in the Berg opera, there's a scene where Marie prays for forgiveness from God, so I'd imagine this scene may rework that plot point to emphasize their relationship more. Woyzeck is driven mad, not only from the affair, but also by constant humiliation from a military captain and experiments by his doctor, and ends up killing Marie.
Not a single comment talking shit about him…
lovely..........lovely.............lovely.........
Judge from the song 'we don' t fall for illusions '!
His greatest track
Yeah, but all the other ones
pure poetry as always, tears fall every time, not of sadness but of beauty
I love this one, nothing more nothing less
How does he put so much between the lines..?. many layers to this wonderful song. Thank you, Tom Waits.
Awante la mente sabia!!!!
Simply amazing
Burnt popcorn and overcooked salmon farm protein..yup
Acá, tranqui, domingo y Tom Waits... como si nada.
Great Actor as well.
I wouldn't say great... But he's almost always fun.
someone wrote that T.Waits create of himself a fiction character??
All the better to the weave through an industry made up of money hungry sharks and scammers. In disguise and unbothered.
Yes and no
He definitely has a persona or two that he takes on and off.
Miss you Kim …❤
Kim must have loved Waits the way you loved Kim?
According to UA-cam mix recommendations...this is "Jazz".
And it is. And folk. And blues. And rock. Tom Waits drinks it all and destills his own music.
@@Dreamsprowler he's also been in rap before, he's not just all over the map he is the map which others are on
It's like Lou Reed said- "If you're using more than two chords, you're not playing Rock and roll, you're playing Jazz.
@@davidmonroe4780 Lou Reed is evil incarnate, when it comes to music. For me. I literally hate him for ruining an entire Metallica album.
gracias mente sabia
even as his later music grew ever more angular and dissonant, waits remained capable of bittersweet serenades such as this.
This song should have been in WALL-E.
💙💙💙
Very fine :)

I can cry evry time I listen it
You are such a genius. I am wordless.
we don't deserve this
Dude. I appreciate you so much.
You are a quantum railroad spike pounded thru the ancient, lazy and ignorant skullduggery of reptiles. That's dinosaur speak for emotional literacy (in their case virtual reality, since they don't have a limbic system).

Much Love to you and yours sir. Listener for 35 years
This comment is almost as well written as this song.
He's totally ripping off Cookie Monster!
Dont know him... from hearing first time... I ask...why is he the only singer with this voice?
There's just the one voice box, and he's using it!
He isn't.
There's Louis Armstrong, Howlin' Wolf & Captain Beefheart...among a few others not as famous. It's just that Tom has better stories...
@@lastrada52 They're similar in some tones, but Waits is more of a mockingbird. It's always fascinated me that Waits sings in several different 'characters', for want of a better word.
@@davidmonroe4780 - Agreed. Yes.
