The SMG4 Redesigns introduced in the Lawsuit arc have changed again as we arrive in the SMG4 Movie The Perfect Video. Let's talk about them as Boopkins SMG3 SMG4 and Meggy have all had their appearances changed and so I think it's crucial to talk about that.

SMG4 AKA SuperMarioGlitchy4 is an animated series based on Super Mario 64 bloopers AKA SM64 Machinima and Garry's Mod AKA GMOD. It has had a variety of arcs such as the Waluigi arc the Rapper Bob arc the Anime arc the UA-cam arc the Genesis arc the Revelations arc and the Lawsuit arc with War of the Fat Italians 2022 AKA Wotfi 2022 rap being this year with Lawyer Kong. And the year before that with SMG0 and Zero and War of the Fat Italians 2021 and the Wotfi 2021 rap and the 10 year anniversary special. SMG4 is also known for Mario Does Things such as Mario Reacts to Nintendo Memes or Mario Plays like before with Mario Plays Cat Mario or SMG4: Mario Goes to Ohio. SMG4 is under Glitch Productions which have made a variety of series such as Meta Runner Season 1 Meta Runner Season 2 Sunset Paradise and Murder Drones Season 1 with Meta Runner Season 3 just finishing. Sunset Paradise is a spinoff of SMG4 following Meggy. SMG4 in 2023 will probably have a new arc as well and I wonder what it will be.

While I personally kind of prefer the other look (perhaps because I had gotten used to it pretty quickly), I’d say Boopkins’ new redesign is an overall “improvement”.

These designs are awesome! Meggy got a glow up, SMG4 and SMG3 look so refreshing and Boopkins got a huge upgrade!
I feel like Tari needs a similar visual upgrade to what Meggy got. The model fit in before but now that both Saiko and Meggy look more polished, Tari really stands out model wise. Especially the hair, that always looked super jank to me.

Don't bother. Don't get me wrong, I want a glow-up of Tari too but she's a walking billboard advertisement for her series. Ever since it ended, her screentime started to decline, so I doubt we'll see that anytime soon unless GLITCH stopped being corporate to what was once a series full of stupidity and silliness made by a Machinimist

I think the reasons they made redesigns, including Meggy, is because of brand purpouse
In promotional material Smg4's design has been different from Mario for years, even boopkins and bob looked more stylized
Sunset Paradise wouldn't have been copyrightable if Meggy were still an inkling
Also, the few times Mario made an appearance in both cases, there always was a caviot to circumvent it (in the 10th anniversary poster his face was zapped, covering his prominent features, and in sunset paradise, when meggy pulls out the photo of her and all his friends, Mario's face was conveniently covered by Meggy's fingers)
In an alternate universe where Luke Lerdwitchagul is a trancedent being he could have made his life work entirely non profit and would possibly not have redesigned any character, but he's human and he needs to make money to live and fund his projects
Weegiepie and similar channels still use old designs because their passion project isn't as big, and don't need to rely on brand recognition as much
Besides that, I think it's beneficial for them to have more brand recognition on UA-cam, which can be boosted with these designs
That’s a smart move, honestly If Meggy was still an Inkling then Sunset Paradise wouldn’t have been a thing. And when you mentioned something about Mario being zapped in the 10th Anniversary Poster, according to the SMG4 Wiki, Possibly in my theory Luke did it so he wouldn’t get in trouble with Nintendo the same way Logan did when he used Mario (or Logan refers as Marvin) characters in SML.
The reason they made redesigns despite still using nintendo ip is likely precautionary - just in case nintendo comes after them. It would be a lot easier for people to transition to a new wholly original channel if they are already familiar with the redesigns. It also allows them to include their characters on merch, which would be far riskier for them to do nowadays with nintendo characters on them as i believe nintendo is stricter about merch with their ip on it nowadays.
not to mention as they already have redesigned models, starting a new channel would be far faster
If Nintendo ever does DMCA them, they would have to essentially hard reboot the series to the point where their old videos wouldn't even be allowed to stay up.
They wouldn't be able to use 99% of what is effectively the foundation of the series. SM64, fonts, Nintendo characters, Nintendo music, they would not be allowed to use any of it.
Additionally, they've already been using redesigned characters for merch, there's no reason to redesign characters for merch when the merch already does so. On top of that, there's been barely any merch regarding the redesigns ever since the Lawsuit arc. The only piece of merch ever been sold since the Lawsuit arc has been the SMG4 figurine.
@@CiblesYT In regards to merch, it could be down to the fact that having the characters in the show and on the merch have consistent designs may make people more inclined to buy them, but i see your point for sure. However, i would like to add that i feel you make the assumption in this video that most people prefer the original designs and want them changed back. I'd argue that poll SMG4 did back in 2022 suggests otherwise, as around 65% (from what i remember) said they liked the designs, over choosing to change them back. Also sorry if i'm being an idiot here, but i'm not sure how the first half of your reply is responding to my comment.
I wanna point out that In the WOTFI 2022 rap, Mario has the line "I'm not your hero, I'm just a dumbass with an IQ of zero" Mario straight up says he isn't Nintendo's IP. Plus Lawyer Kong uses Nintendo IP to call out Nintendo's aggressive practices
Or, he could just want to separate himself from nintendo a bit. It's his channel, he can do what he likes.
This is just a theory, so don't take it to seriously, but maybe the reason why SMG4, SMG3, Bob, and Boopkins have gotten redesigns is because they're all original characters, but in Nintendo IP bodies. Also, Bob and Boopkins sort of became more popular in a way as well.
Yeah. Even though it was mostly portrayed comedically, the reason given in the WOTFI for changing them actually makes sense. Not only are there characters now original, they now have their own original and distinguishable look.
Well technically speaking, Boopkins is Nintendo related because he's Spike from the Mario series. While Bob is a character from LOZ (had to do research on who he is).
Boopkins tho looks a bit more original now than he was in the past. Don't exactly like it, but its better than nothing.
The channel has been up since 2009 and Nintendo has never cared in all those years.
Not to mention he still uses Mario and Luigi in his videos.
@@MimDe Because Mario and Luigi fall under parody law in Australia, where Luke and Kevin live. Bob, Boopkins, SMG4 and 3 do not fall under parody as they are their own characters with Nintendo designs. And the only reason why Nintendo would only care now is because SMG4 is gaining more attention.
I feel like the final character who really needs a new model is Tari, outside of her, I don't think anyone else really needs it, Chris and Swag are represented with Microsoft IP and Melony and Kaizo are still very recent additions, plus both their models still hold up.

That’s actually correct, Tari needs to be redesigned at this point but I’m unsure about Chris, Swag, Mario, Luigi, Melony and Kaizo.
I think Melony will get redesigned in 2024.
Swag & Chris will get redesigned in 2026.
But Mario and/or Luigi on the other hand won’t get redesigned.

You know after I saw Meggy's new model, I now want them to make an new model for Tari since her model is the oldest out of all the original characters and I think it doesn't look that good in front of the new ones.

Agreed! I'm hoping she'll be the next one to get a redesign. Make her model more detailed and closer to her Meta Runner look.
Cause now that Meggy, SMG4, SMG3, Boopkins and Bob now have a lot of detail.
All they really have to do is what they did to Meggy and just make it more hd with a little extra details
I am glad Luke and Kevin listened to us. SMG4 and 3’s redesign looks good. Meggy kinda just looks the same. Just enhanced. I also like Fishy Boopkins redesign too

This is a complete guess because I’m not a lawyer but:
I think the reason for not reverting the changes is because if they use Nintendo characters, then they won’t get dmca strikes, but if they rename the characters without redesigning them to look completely different, Nintendo can dmca them because they are technically changing Nintendo characters and their personalities. Which is why they used the spike model, because they didn’t specify it was fishy boopkins.
Then what about Mario as Mario and Luigi as Luigi

Like they dont just want to be mario recolors and that they're like they're own characters idk I'm bad at explaining I have seen a comment writing something similar about meggy how they're proud of that character since they used an nintendo ip and then made it they're own and I thought that logic would also work with smg3 and 4 idk im tired

I can understand a possible reason why they still did the re-designs. As someone who loves to make stories for people, I would likely want these characters to be as original as possible, while still not deviating too far from their nintendo equivalents. So honestly, I probably would’ve done what SMG4 would’ve done, not to escape Nintendo, but to just make these characters feel for personal and special for me. Thanks for listening to my TED talk lol
I feel like the thing most SMG4 fans don't recognize is how much SMG4 wants to make a bigger identity for himself and honestly I think the redesigns are great. Before, the redesigns (except for Bob) weren't amazing but it was clear SMG4 wanted to make his character designs more unique to his own channel. I honestly love the new designs way more than just the old models. We went from recolored Mario's to original designs for SMG4 and 3 and people are mad about that.
I think its half the reason, he did state on twitter he was thinking about changing SMG3 and 4's models aside from a DMCA and more of wanting to just build a new model to work on source more/to make SMG4 and 3 be different than just being mario clones, it's not perfect but it does show they want to take the series in a different direction
I'm thinking they didn't revert the designs because then, it would make the Lawsuit Arc truly feel pointless. Because of the main change of that Arc is reversed, them there’s no point in recognizing it as canon.
There’s also the fact that like a comment here says, people are already used to the characters being redesigned in the first place, so reverting them would be another big jarring change.

In the 2019 overview that SMG4 did after the anime arc he did say he wanted to redesign the character of SMG4 and others so everybody wasn’t just Mario in a different colour
Guess he just got around to doing it with even more characters when the lawsuit arc came around and the redesigns in the lawsuit arc may have been rushed

The main reason I think the old designs arent coming back is for marketing and merchandise. The only characters that gotten redesigns are OCs (yes even Bob and Boopkins). With the new designs, its easier to make merch without getting into legal trouble.
Maybe that's because it's a still image and that'll change when we'll see it in action, but I feel like there's something about the new SMG4 redesign's face that feels kinda weird.
I love SMG3 though he's so cool like that ^^
I'm not sure I like the new Boopkins redesign a lot, but it's definitly an improvement, and I'll probably get used to it after some time.
My opinion on the redesigns
(Warning: kind of controversial)
SMG3 - looks nice 👍
Meggy - it felt unnecessary to remodel. Nonetheless, she looks nice, but the previous model looks better to me
Boopkins - even though it made a bit sense to make him look like his brother, he looked better in a pea shape than a deformed chicken to me.
Edit: After almost a month, I feel like changing my opinion on the redesigns
SMG3 - Same opinion
Meggy - Like I said it was unnecessary, but after some time getting used to it, I actually like it. Still miss the previous one tho. (And I actually love the previous one more.)
Boopkins - Getting some time used to Boopkins new design, I can say my previous opinion aged poorly. Love the new Boopkins design.

I feel like Boopkins is more supposed to be seen as an OC and have his own appearance outside of nintendo just like Tari, Saiko and other, Wario and Waluigi didn't change design because they are supposed to be Wario and Waluigi while Bob and Boopkins are more than just a Garo and a Spike.

I think Nintendo ip is still being used because the redesigns for smg3,4 Boopkins, and bob, and castle sinking is just the beginning of Smg4’s journey of originality.
how is making the designs reflect on their irl counterparts a bad thing? it makes a lot of sense for it to be that way (and I just like the designs)
I feel like the real reason Luke wanted these design changes is less because of the ominous threat of Nintendo DMCA takedowns, and more because he wanted to give a more unique look to his characters. I get the feeling be never intends to change Mario's look, but rather he wants to increase the creative flair of his surrounding characters that are based on existing IPs, particularly SMG4 and SMG3, who are simply reskins of Mario. They're still clearly based on their old design, but now they have a more unique look that sets them apart even further.
Bob and Boopkins' situation is similar, but a little different. While they definitely have a more unique and outstanding design now, Boopkins is still obviously a Spike and Bob is still obviously a Garo. Even if someone had never even seen them with their original designs, they would still easily be able to tell that Boopkins is meant to be a Spike and Bob is meant to be a Garo.
This is exactly why I think the redesigns had little or nothing to do with dodging DMCA takedowns, and I feel like Luke wasn't being as honest as he should have been when he gave his explanation. I think the Lawsuit Arc was simply a fun idea they conceived based on a real fear they had, and the redesigns were probably something the Lerd brothers had been wanting to do for a long time, just for creative purposes rather than simply as a legal precaution.
I should note, I'm saying this after finishing the Perfection Arc. I've been sleeping on the series a bit and I have some catching up to do.
The reason why SMG4 made these redesigns is so if Nintendo DMCA's them, SMG4, SMG3, Boopkins and Bob are safe.

i think they changed these specific characters because their old models were similar to other models (smg4 and smg4 were mario, meggy was inkling, bob was garos and boopkins was spike) i think they changed them because they were using Nintendo characters but renaming them, kinda of like plagiarism in a sense. mario ip is fine because they name mario, wario, waluigi etc by their original names
My guess of why they made the redesigns and decided to stick with it was mainly because of how much more they use high quality animation now. The new models in opinion have always been SO much more expressive then the old Mario ones but the new designs push that to a much higher degree with how they react and especially facial animations. After all there's only so much you can do that looks good with distorting a Mario recolors face.
Reverting the designs is a little pointless to the "LAWSUIT ARC!!!!"

As an OC creator and owner myself, I wasn't against these redesigns, but's good to see these improvements to them, especially Meggy and Boopkins
I personally like the new designs I am just honestly glad a actually listen to the fans with their criticism and gave us what we wanted they all look a million times better also Looking forward to the movie this Saturday
I think the reason why these characters are redesigned is because these are original characters made by SMG4. They are also part of the main cast, so it would make sense for SMG4 to redesign them instead of reverting them.
I think it’s less that they want to avoid a DMCA from Nintendo right now and more that they want to be ready for one, considering the castle is now gone I’m thinking that SMG4 are trying to slowly phase out all the Nintendo stuff, first redesigning the OCs, then replacing the castle, and finally, it’s likely something is going to happen to Mario, Luigi, and the other main Nintendo characters, wether that be a redesign or removing them all together. It’s honestly a good way of doing this as opposed to in the future if Nintendo were to hit them with a DMCA and these changes were already made, forcing SMG4 to make all these changes all at once.
I honestly think Boopkins looks worse now. The other one was just a green ball, sure, but at least that one didn't look like a malnourished blobfish
I agree, Boopkins looks way creepier now and it's kinda out for his character to be THAT ugly. Yeah the old design was simple but still people could get used to it.

I liked SMG4 and 3's change form the old arc, but gotta admit, 3's new look for the movie was cool looking. Boopkins yeah I do think it was the right call to change his appearance there. Meggy was LONG overdue for an upgrade and I like how she looks.

Listen man, I get everyone wants the “old SMG4 back” but people change and so does their identity and brand. There is millions of videos of the old stuff if the new stuff isn’t your vibe. People can’t be forced to stay the same forever, and personally I like the changes, it shows his growth as a creator.

From what I remember, in a video He made about 2019, Luke stated that He expressed interest in re-designing SMG4. So I don't think fear for a DMCA from Nintendo was the exact reason, Especially since Australia has fair use laws.

I honestly think the redesigns are still good more improvs on SMG's 4 and 3, Boopkins' upgrade is very good and Meggy getting a bit of a glow-up

I think it's because having the originals always in every second and on the front of the screens would have risked a decade more than using characters part time

I think the idea is that in a worse case scenario they can hold onto to some of the best characters, and hope to patch together the channel, though unlikely because it would be weird to redesign characters like Mario just look at SML
Mario, Luigi etc. are protected by Australian parody law. As long as SMG4 doesn't do anything offensive with them/use them in merch.
I can answer the question of why they changed SMG3 + 4.

I don't know what to feel about Meggy's redesign because her human design from 2019 is just so iconic along with the enhanced version made by John10v10. I was planning to make an SM64 Model Hack with John10v10's Meggy model but with the remastered model made by Guillaume Coquel Danchin on the horizon, I'm reconsidering doing so.

i think the redesigns created because smg4 smg3 and most other characters are ocs and not Nintendo original characters so i think that luke think that created ocs could trigger Nintendo so he changed them

I actually prefer Meggy’s old model. It just feels weird in my opinion. I do like SMG3 and 4’s redesign, iffy on Boopkins but I prefer meggy’s 1st human design.

Heh, funny how in the movie there was scene with old 3 and 4 designs
They changed them because they wanted them to be original,and thats understandable
I'm certain the reason they have unique designs is so they can make merch
