    Anyone who understands boxing knows that you have to beat the champion for the win...Carter failed to do that in this fight. The fight showed to warriors putting in on the line but the champ was good enough with moving and boxing to retain his title. To move and box was the first thing that my coach taught me before he showed me how to throw a punch. Just for the record he was Sugar Ray Robinson's sparing partner and knew the sport. So hollywood lies again...no big surprise.

    I can understand a lot of people who don't know boxing might make Carter the winner,but even if you believe that,it's patently obvious that the movie depiction was just an outrage.I mean they show Carter absolutely stomping the crap out of Giardello,then after the decision one of the announcers says"I don't know what fight these judges were watching" and a riot breaks out.See anything like that here?

    • @ALOMACHO
      @ALOMACHO 5 років тому

      felltone because it’s a movie, not a documentary. The basis of the movie was not his boxing career. It was his being sentenced for a crime he didn’t commit. The boxing scene shows that his character was used to overcoming racism, even in the boxing ring. The movie Raging Bull did the same. Sugar Ray Robinson beat Jake LaMotta. The movie shows that they were pretty even, when in real life Robinson was the better boxer. But Raging Bull was about how LaMotta was a Christ like figure who endured suffering, sometimes self-inflicted by himself.

    A very close fight, and a pretty good one in my estimation. Many of the rounds were difficult to score in my opinion. I came up with Carter by one round, but it was exactly the type of fight where you would expect a decision for the defending champion, especially in his hometown.The depiction in the movie was clearly unfair, but so are the depictions of "Hurricane" Carter as an overrated, untalented fighter. A pretty enjoyable watch I must say.

  • @hits128
    @hits128 15 років тому +6

    After watching this fight, i can see why it was depicted as a win for carter in the movie. It definitely would have been a more boring story if it was displayed that the fight was more of a tie or win for Giardello. I've seen many fights and you have to beat the champion. This was more of a scoring fight and challengers never win those. That's boxing. Even though carter was backing the champ up, he had no control, which is why he lost the fight. Period... nothing racist about it.

    hmmm....this was definitely close but I think Giardello deserved this one. He scored better with far fewer misses and quite a few good body punches throughout. Carter was wildly swinging and hurting his score with countless misses. Through the last 8 rounds Giardello was in complete control and you get the sense he's simply not going to give Carter that opening he needs.
    One thing is for sure; that Hurricane movie was NOT accurate. Makes me wonder how many other lies were in that film.

He did have some good rounds earlier in the fight not nearly enough to win in anything like an obvious fashion. Ha ha. I love boxing, race means nothing to me. My favourites are Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson. So don't tell me I'm a racist because I believe this was a valid points decision for Giardello and the "Hurricane" movie was a SHAM. Personally, I think if the fight had of been in New York it would have been much closer in the scoring - not for race reasons but because Giardello made all the clinches and was backing up most of the fight. Aggression always counted more with New York judges.

    In a title fight, you have to win decisively, which Carter didn't do. As for the movie, what a pack of lies. And Birdman Robert Stroud too was innocent. The only difference is that Stroud wasn't Black and thus couldn't use the race card.

  • @brizfightfan

    Giardello never beat Fullmer, it was a draw. His record against Dick Tiger was two wins, two losses. And yes, he did beat a 42yo Sugar Ray Robinson. He also ducked George Benton who'd given him a proper hiding in his own back yard - Convention Hall, Philadelphia

    • @Ijustinsultedyou

      Duck Georgie Benton? I don’t think he was a fighter that anybody would actually duck. Benton’s résumé is not really a Who’s Who list of all-time great’s. Most of the fighters he fought had losing records. And Giradello did fight Benton and beat him by unanimous decision in 1962

    As much as I wanted to say that Giardello won, It seemed to me that Carter won, something like 8-6-1 He fought aggressively throughout and landed the harder punches. I understand that Philly was Giardello's home town and also that it's really tough to get a decision against a champion, unless you do it convincingly.
    This fight was a kind of reversal of Pastrano winning against Johnson. Challenger sneaking out a close points decision.
    I see both sides of this. I would understand if Carter & his followers thought he was shortchanged. Incidently, I thought he committed the murders. I also think that the movie Hurricane was a propaganda film. Also, I never rooted for a black fighter against a white opponent in 40 years of watching fights, but that never convinced me that I was racist.
    But i have always been fair and I call them as I see them.

    TO BE THE CHAMPION, YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE CHAMPION...This was a BOXING match, and the decision was made correctly by 2 of 3 judges. Mr. Carter did not beat the champion. While I can say Mr. Carter, clearly won 3 rounds, and Mr. Giardello clearly won 4 rounds, the champ easily out-landed Mr. Carter in most all of the remaining, albeit, very close rounds. In defense of the obvious, when the two fighters come out in the 15th round, they already knew who was clearly in the lead by their actions. Mr. Carter showed anxious desperation, in a futile attempt giving it all he had left. Mr. Giardello, however... BOXED and easily coasted to a well deserved victory..That is how I saw things after being witness to a typical example of the fine art of boxing in my humble opinion.... In a real fight, with no rules... I feel quite sure Mr. Carter would of had a definite advantage, he would most likely have pulled a gun as he later proved he was quite capable of, when he took part in murdering some people. As an experienced, extremely violent criminal, he already had lots of practice at theft, assault, and murder. Robbing, stabbing,and shooting not to mention assaulting the 112 pound girl who was the reason a judge let him out after his first conviction only to be found guilty a second time quite easily because of his witnesses admitted he bribed them into a fake alibi during the first trial, was, according to his own admissions, "just the way I was raised and the way I have always lived my life." I know for sure that somewhere hidden between the Hollywood story and the actual story there lies the truth. Once again, my opinion. Peace. (never trust or speak to cops, and long live MMA)

    For the people that have said the movie is about him being black and falsely imprisoned... so the truth of the outcome of the fight is irrelevant. So I don't have to reply to each and every person....
    They also said it's a true story, right... so the people that haven't saw the fight and only go by the movie (which most people do, especially younger no offense Young Bucks, y'all just wasn't around to see the fight live and understand the atmosphere and feelings there in) then they perceive it to be true when it's just exaggerated lies. That puts all the rest of the facts into question. It starts to turn out like CNN. It was such a big deal they got sued over exactly that fight scene in the movie. So I don't think it's JUST about him being imprisoned, it's also about his life, and his life as a boxer and being black. If you want to call it a "true story" but the truth isn't what you like, don't just flat-out make up a lie. They acted like everybody in the crowd and the announcers believed hurricane won the fight, when that just isn't the truth, the people in the crowd didn't think that. It gives a false perception of reality, hence the lawsuit. Don't act like he won a fight that he didn't, just because he got locked up when he shouldn't have. It's got me questioning the whole movie... maybe he didn't get locked up because he was black, maybe it was because he stabbed a cop and that cop didn't like him... because he STABBED him!! I got a funny feeling that if I stabbed somebody... especially a cop, they would have a personal grudge against me too... and maybe I would go to jail years later also, and I'm as white as snow, but because of my income level it wouldn't matter what color I was!!

    I say the fight is a draw. Carter hurt Joey in half the rounds. The announcers are very one sided in their commentary. Saying Joey is landing when he isn't and Carter not landing when he was. Could of went either way, the scoring was way off by the judges. Carter didn't destroy him like the movie says, but Joey didn't win it the way the judges scored it.
