Thank you, i have been working on a newer version of my image with new art, but i honestly want to spend more time to make it the best it can be. I have noticed my last builds torrents people are having problems with so i may reupload to my google drives a fixed and updated version of that. Honestly its more of this isnt sustainable yet and my work is currently doubled due to christmas . I should have more time soon to work on new image. I will likely release a image review and a product review (vga to hdmi converter) videos soon when ever i can slap them into editing lol
There are probably two main reasons why the enemy mech in the cockpit display is solid and not wireframe: 1) we (PowerVR) hadn't put a line drawing function into the SGL API and so Flag& Lemmy, who were doing the port, had to use filled polygons & 2) perhaps counter-intuitively, had we added a line drawing function, , it would have much been slower to render than the filled polygons. :-)
It's also a shame it was limited to 640x480. I suspect it would have run quite well at 800x600 or even (maybe) 1024x768 (assuming the 2D card had sufficient RAM)
Maybe not finally - The ice world reflections - I'm pretty certain those are done by putting the whole world in the scene a second time.. but upside down 🙂
@@Spear_n_Jackson_Number3 I think the mid 90s were a pretty exciting time for gfx cards. Some manufacturers were rendering quad primitives, and other crazy things. Was SGL inspired by OpenGL at all? I know in the emulation scene, that the powervr card in the dreamcast was very hard to emulate .. for years due to the way it handles transparency. It basically perfectly sorts sorts at the pixel level the polygons from back to front. That's just not really possible on any kind of modern hardware without very expensive order independent transparency solutions.
@@Spear_n_Jackson_Number3 opengl had display lists which I guess effectively work the same way. However I think they were too generic, you can bundle any kind of state or matrix function in there too.
Nice comparission. I will try to upload the 3Dfx version soon, to see for yourself that the titanium edition is not the correct 3dfx game to compare with. It would be the Mechwarrior 2 Orchid Rigeous 3D version running solely on the 3Dfx Voodoo 1 installed with orchid drivers. It is still not as nice as the PowerVr version, but its not as bad as the Titanium Edition.
Rad. This may be silly question but what MW2 version is this? Did Activision release a version specifically for power vr? I see the Matrox Mystique CD-ROM pop up on Ebay but I've never found a way to play with the power VR graphics
Yes this was a mw2 version made for the graphic card. I have never seen a CD ROM but believe one exist. They also offered a patch for the normal dos version of the game on there website back in the day. Sadly no emulation has ever been done on this version of the game. So the only way to play is on original hardware. Which sucks because it is the best version of the game, with longer draw distances and better mech models and textures. Oh and it isn't broken like the pentium versions.
@@ValkyrieVewas So which version are you playing here? Do you have a power vr cd? Or did you add conversion files? I have tried everything possible, I still have all 3 original CD rom's for the windows 95 pentium versions which work fine, but no 3-D acceleration. I also have all 3 DOS versions on boxer which work flawlessly, but again no 3-D acceleration. I'm not a computer guru so I'm at the edge of my knowledge here lol. I can't even figure out how to use nGlide or dgVoodoo... At this point I'd settle for either of those since it sounds like power vr is extremely difficult to get to work.
@@ValkyrieVewas Also I'm on a Mac which makes things a little trickier lol. But I might have access to a windows 10 computer soon. Either way thanks a lot for your quick response!
@@ValkyrieVewas Ironically, I just found your video a mere 4ish years later. I managed to finally acquire a Matrox m3d card cheap with the specific intent of playing Mech Warrior 2. (I had the ATI Rage edition back in the day and never experienced the PowerVR edition until I saw a different video a few years ago.) Finding working conversion files has been tricky so far but I look forward to trying this out. I'm using a Pentium 166 for my system though as it was the closest match to the Pentium 133 I played it on as a teen. * Software Rendered: "seconds per frame" * ATI Rage Edition: ~16fps * PowerVR Edition: TBD Cheers!
Could I ask what type of Pentium you were using during the gameplay here? I noticed something funny when using a processor faster than 750MHz in the Windows versions of Mechwarrior 2; In particular jumpjets no longer refill (sometime fixable by doing something to slow down the framerate like moving the mouse a lot) As for Mech2Mercs versions shots end up going through enemies and AI scripts will bug out!
@@ValkyrieVewas Ah thanks for replying, I was thinking of trying out a PowerVR card in a Athlon 2GHz machine for a smooth framerate but it sounds like its just asking for trouble, will just need to stick to the DOS version for that one.
Do you think you'd be willing to, assuming the PCem team are interested, send your Matrox card to them for them to attempt to emulate it? I'd LOVE to play that version, but with the cards so rare even if I COULD get one I'd be at its mercy, only able to play it as long as the almost-thirty-year-old-hardware remained functional, while if the PCEm team are interested and able to emulate it then EVERYONE would be able to play it!
I got mine on ebay boxed. They are VERY rare at this point and go for a few hundred. You can find them cheaper if people dont know what they are. There is one other powerVR card made by VideoLogic Apocalypse 3D
Thumbs up for ya! Are you going to release a new pi image for arcade 1up soon?

I've always wondered what the powervr version looked like. It's so smooth and round. It reminds me of the dreamcast.

Oh and the Titanium Edition is based on mercenaries btw.
Thanks for the info!
Nice comparing! I would like to see more gameplay wich each version. Thanks for the video!
Whoa, that's a really tall Mad Dog in this version! It really towers over the Hellbringer on Iron Piston.
Love me some maddog! Lol the mechs all look much rounder and missle pods seem to pop out more.
Great comparison
