Man, this masterpiece of an album has eluded me for 34 years. I am in total awe of this music. I remember watching the Sanity video back then and thinking it was good. I remember seeing the album in a shop back then, but I did not try listening to it. Big mistake.

The whole "Brighter Than a Thousand Suns" album is a solemnly and sublime piece of music. However my absolute favorite is Chessboards, closely followed by Love of the Masses.

Exactly. If this would have been released by "just another 80's band" without the history of KJ, it would have been hugely popular. A flat-out epic album similar in strength to the Chameleon's first 2 and Echo's Heaven Up Here.

Agreed! Google the 2016 30th anniversary review of the album by Oliver Sheppard...

A seriously in depth review of the whole scene.

@@fractaljack Thank you so much for mentioning The Chameleons! Never heared of them but gave a listen and was instantly hooked. "What does anything mean? basically" is really insanely good. It's strange that they never made it big, they seem to be even more underrated than Killing Joke. For anyone reading this: If you like BTATS you should really give a listen!

    • @fractaljack
      @fractaljack 4 роки тому +3

@@thetension4882 You're welcome! So glad I could turn someone on to them in 2019. Ironically, I've been listening to "Script" in my car for the past week...not a clinker in the whole album and still sounds fresh! Back in the day, we always kept those bands on a tight leash and didn't really want them to be well-known. Our fear was they would " sell out" and go to a major label. Okay, I have 2 more for you. The Comsat Angels - Waiting For A Miracle LP and pretty much everything by The Sound but especially "Jeopardy" and "From the Lion's Mouth". The interesting thing about the Chameleons and the Sound was they only had a lead vocalist with no backing vocals; similar to The Cure. The singers were so powerful they didn't need anyone else. Adrian Borland was one of the finest singer/songwriters of that generation and there is an interconnected thread to Ian Curtis and JD that you can discover.

Around, around, young men and women move
Through sun and steel our lives transforming
To forge a link flow backwards to our source
And forfeit self amongst the masses
    Why do we love them?
    Love of the masses
They fight and play in timeless rivalry
The people clamour for a loser
WIth joy and sorrow mixed we realize
That peace shall come by sacrifice (EDIT: peace!)
    Why do we love them?
    Love of the masses
As proud as heroes walking hand in hand
    The common destiny we're sharing
    And all affected without prejudice
Shall forfeit self amongst the masses
    Why do we love them?
    Love of the masses

"Critics" can say what they want, I also love this era of Killing Joke, even "outside the gate" is great. They're known for their monotonous, hammering sound but flavouring it with a good pop hookline is what what made KJ always interesting & different to me.

I wish they had not remixed "Rubicon" on newer issues of the album. For some reason, the remix fades out the song near the ending, instead of climaxing with the loud, echoing BOOM heard at the end of the original issue. I feel the original ending is far more powerful than a slow fade-out.
