1. Don't mix more than one pattern
2. Patterns are okay with soli colors, as long as the colors don't clash
3. Clashing colors are colors that are uncomfortable to the eye and most of the time not near or across from each other on the color spectrum
4. Black goes with everything
5. Try not to mix fabrics, certain fabrics are okay when mixed. i.e: Denim jeans and cotton sweaters/vests - good, Denim Jackets and cotton pants - bad, denim jeans and denim jacket - good, cotton pants and cotton sweaters/vests - good.
6. Play to your advantages. Match with your eyes, or best defining traits. Long arms - long sweater. Green eyes - Same color green vest
7. Try not to overplay colors. Definitely do not wear all different shades of green - or all green in general. This goes for every color. Use colors that do not clash with it, are comfortable to the eyes and match.
8. (This should be a given) Match the weather. Only middle school guys still wear basketball shorts during winter. Dress appropriate to the season.
9. Don't mix themes that should not be mixed! Don't mix pastel with punk, or casual with clubbing.
10. Most important rule - Be comfortable and confident. Popularity doesn't sell the outfit, you do. You could wear anything and as long as you were comfortable and confident about it, it would sell. If you followed all of these rules, yet weren't confident or comfortable, there's no point.

i completely agree!!! My wants are never quite in accordance with what's in fashion. All i want are a few good skater skirts, but for some reason they're 'out of fashion' and i can't find them anywhere!!! There used to be skater skirts everywhere! Skater skirts lining the streets!!! High waisted! Gradient! A plethora of choices! But now... the only skater skirts I see are merely mirages, scattered across the baron wasteland of my skater skirt dreams.
