One of the best underground DJ sets I've heard in years... It's really refreshing to see an all vinyl set mixed in fluid fashion... In a vinyl store... This gives me hope seeing how many views it's gotten... Who knows... Resurgence of this sound on the horizon? I really hope so...
I'm new to this kind of music, I've just randomly found this on UA-cam. But I love it! Is this type of sound old school? Can you explain what you mean by "resurgence"? Is it about using actual vinyl instead of digital equipment connected to software?
@@Superogobongo Good question... Yes, both the DJ style, and the production of the music, would be considered old school, representative of the 90's underground sound that could only be heard at a rave or afterhours nightclub. The DJ style was characterized by long, blended mixes, with a duration of a single mix lasting up to 3 minutes. On the dance floor, you could get lost in the mix, with the best DJs blending so smoothly that you couldn't discern one track from the next, or when the mix was actually completed. It has been a dream of mine that this music production style would make a comeback in the same way that synthwave has for the 80's style sound. It is a great relief to find that many of the releases performed in this mix are newer vinyl releases, and I hope that vinyl 12" singles will be more widely available, so that performing sets like this with modern releases can be a reality again. The music production style can easily make a resurgence, with the availability of truly affordable synthesizers, drum machines, and samplers that can recreate the sound and the vibe.
@@donovanbartish what an era it was! Vodka snuck in record boxes, carrying record boxes to get comps, DJ's hiding the label info, real white labels, test pressings like gold dust and condensation raining on you from the pipes. Ah, this set makes me miss it.
It really warms my heart to see all these comments. 30 years ago in a small town in Sweden, this was me. Everyone I knew was into rock music and I would spend all my time with my turntables and mixer, perfecting the art of DJing while being laughed at by all the rocker wannabes around me. Since then the industry has not only gone mainstream but it turned into something that people can really appreciate and enjoy, even perceiving it as art. My 15-year-old self would’ve been very pleased.
Oh man this brings back so many memories and emotions from when I first found out about electronic music when I was a teen. Buying and playing my first Plastikman album at the age of 15 in '95. And I've only listened to the first 30 seconds so far. Yep, I'm going to fall asleep listening to this and have the beautifullest of beautiful dreams about that sentiment. 🥰
Precise, deft, unhurried but sharp, elegant, un-indulgent, dedicated, attentive. A joy to watch this craftsman work. The very definition of smooth and faultless. You gain not only an understanding of what is being done but retain that sense of wonder in 'how does he do it?'
Honestly he doesn´t himself any favor with this earphone and mixer. You can have the same analytic sound quality AND free hands. Same with the mixer... nice sounding expensive toy, extremely precise but lacking workflow. You can see this when he is transitioning tracks. But nice set, best with good earphones and some fine weed ;)
The choosing of colour from the palette is the selection of records, the colour mixing is the beat matching and the brushstrokes are his use of the mixer. You paint with atmosphere and temperature, a true artist.
I love the look and feel of everything from the gear to the environment. From how Tomoki moves and flows through the work and the real attention to detail he has while pulling away to enjoy the moments for himself as well. It adds to the performance which is how I see his enjoyment of sharing his craft. Just an incredible set and video to enjoy of it. Cheers all around! My takeaway vibes are: May we all share the same love for a craft that takes us away on our greatest life adventure. Thank you Tomoki for the lesson.
