  • For four short years, from 1958 to 1963, a comic called, "Closer Than We Think," appeared in the Sunday newspapers in several cities across the U.S. Each week, this comic would make a prediction about life in the future and would include a full-color drawing of what that predicted future might look like.
The topics covered space travel, undersea travel, possible inventions, homelife, and many other day-to-day lifestyle aspects that would likely be far different in the future.
Today, we're going to look back at some of these colorful predictions and see how things really turned out!
FOR MORE INFORMATION: If you're interested in learning more about the author of the comic, "Closer Than We Think," there is a full documentary that is currently available on streaming channels.

I remember in the 1950’s in Mechanix Illustrated magazine was a page of ideas for the future - I recall wrist Phones and TVs, self driving and flying cars too. 😁👍🏼

Seems like the flying cars are the one thing we're all still left waiting for...

This was great. Love how optimistic the past was, for the future. Makes you wonder...how we made it such a mess?

Did he predict that in 2024 we’d have a senile old man as a president? Or that we would be considered criminals for not wearing masks? Or that the world of 2024 would make us want to go back to the past? 😮

Great points, Glenn. OR that EVERYTHING would be all over with in terms of films, music, auto design?? No one thought those things were finite with a beginning, middle and end, but they were. The argument can be made those things ARE still around, but in what form or condition??! The condition Joe Biden's in!! Uggghk!

I wish we still had the optimism of these people who thought this up.

The trailer trucks? Same as a train. No Johnny Quest ? It was early 60’s & a great cartoon for kids

When I was a kid in the 60s, I remember that in the future we'd have jetpacks we'd strap on our back and zoom off. Shucks, that didn't happen:(

We have cameras that show us the past. They're called security cameras.

Back in 1981 I bought a 1967 Corvette and my friends grandmother saw it and called it "The car from Mars."

I’d say a modern security camera could be a way to “look into the past “ even though I know that isn’t what the comic was going for.🤔

There had already been an inflatable airplane built by Goodyear, the “inflatoplane”, 12 examples were made from 1956 to 1959.

Copies of Popular Science from the fifties and sixties are loaded with this stuff. I never balk at the chance to pick up copies at swap meets. We are living the future that they envisioned. SPOILER ALERT- Things didn’t turn out so good.

At the :50 mark you bring up flying cars and personal helicopters being "somewhere" in the future. People can barely drive cars on the ground as it is, in case you didn't know that without extremely frequent accidents. The helicopter thing (if it were to happen) would just be another thing to come crashing down. These would only be "toys" for people like bald Bezos. Private planes that have been around since 1951 or earlier, will continue to be "flying cars" which is what they've always been anyway, though not called that.

Planes fly with the aid of stuff on the ground. Cars drive with help from above. Weird.

Goodyear did develop a inflatable aircraft and tested it with some success it was a idea to airdrop them to pilots that had been shot down . But it’s slow speed would have made it a easy target for small arms fire so it was never implemented.

The inflatable plane did exist. Goodyear inflatoplae from 1956. It was an idea to extract downed pilots. I think i saw it on dark skies Channel.

The inflatable airplane in a bag was built in the early 60s. Made by Goodyear Tire, it was made for downed pilots and dropped from a rescue plane. Just pull it out of the bag, start the engine and you're off. At least that's the plan. The way it looks, I think I'll walk back...

I believe the narrator needs to learn to keep on subject, rather wander off on explosions and cartoon women.

I hear you. I just found it funny how the cartoonist was always inserting these drawings of pretty women, although they had nothing to do with the actual invention. My remarks were meant to draw attention to this.
