So it took me about, On and off, 12 YEARS! Various reasons for this though but went through early 2018, eventually got elected into membership in Feb/March 2019 and I have received royalties for a band that stopped in 2016 plus a December bonus to date. I am currently signing up with SAMPRA, Capasso and anyone else I can get in touch with because I am sick of being a poor musician. I know I won't be Ed Sheeran rich but we all gotta start somewhere. For some reason, I always thought SAMRO did it all. Clearly not the case but at least I am starting to get things rolling.
As long as you’re making progress, it doesn’t matter how long it takes. I’m glad I could help with a few things. Depending on where your music was being used, you might be leaving some money/royalties on the table. Keep grinding and I’m sure you’ll get where you should be✊🏾

If CAPASSO collects *mechanical* royalties from Spotify, who collects *performance* royalties from Spotify?
Good question. By all counts, SAMRO should be collecting these but I haven't gotten clarity from them either. I use songtrust for songs with significant streams to collect on my behalf.

IMRAP Inc. I have already done a video that covers that. How to register with SAMRO but I suggest you do it on the online portal. I’ve also done a video on that.

Perfect, it's easier if you're in a city where they have offices and if you have time. But with Covid and for people not in JNB, it's trickier.

Great intro to the series. I need info on RISA and the administration of ISRC codes. also, you spoke of radio but who collects royalties for TV i.e music videos?
Mmeli Hlanze RISA, I will be covering the week after next. Risa administers your ISRC. There’s a similar number for audio visuals.
TV is also subjected to the same music rights, even if it’s a music video. So SAMRO collects the performance royalty, Capasso the mechanical as your music is synced to the video and SAMPRA collects the needle time.

That’s the plan. Just samro has a lot of information that I wanted to cover. I think I might get to Capasso in two weeks.

Copyright is automatic as soon as you make your song "tangible". This basically means you've either written it or recorded it.
So how do samro know that im performing in public like ..gigs/events...?
You notify them. I have a video in my samro playlist.

SAMRO has Annual General Meetings to discuss all sorts of music related topics. Some times, they need to vote on those things. You also get access to information from SAMRO such as the outcomes of AGMs.

Find a music library or music supervisor. Music libraries are easier to contact though. Capasso has a ratings card that has a list for you.
