A miracle happened. I just met and saw these fine people play in Three Oaks Michigan Acorn theater [small informal venue how cool!]on Sept 8, 2023. I drove two hours from my house. A dream come true for this former music teacher. I could tell they were a little tired from their annual road trip, with midwestern dates added, going up the Eastern coast, into Maine, New York and other states, then down to Ohio and over to southern Michigan, and up to Remus MI the next day to the Wheatland Folk Festival. Then a venue or two in Indiana before they go home. Anyway they were so gracious to talk to me individually. when they stepped up onto the stage, the energy NEVER let it up, they gave their all for that little crowd of maybe 225 people, jam packed into this little theater, and gave an encore. afterward they did a meet and greet. i always paid individual compliments on their musicianship and personalities. To be able to stutter as I talked to Erika Lewis was a treat, she was very patient with me. i said I'm an d old man but sorry, but I'm star struck, and she smiled. Talked to Barnabus, Greg, and Robin, and Todd. The I spotted her, Shaye, my musical hero. A nice talk, and I made her laugh out loud when I said 6 weeks ago I bought my ticket, and ever since I've been crapping my pants in anticipation of going to my first live Tuba Skinny Concert. This woman may be about 5ft 1'' height, but to me she is 10 feet tall. And yes I had my Tuba Skinny short on to make sure they knew what a big fan I was, and IK bought some stuff. Even the lady who drive the bus and handles the souvenirs was super nice. one least thing, I told them they have played more concerts than the Beatles did as a world wide act, and have released at least as many albums by now. So they are the Beatles of Jazz. The best way to meet our heroes is at small venues, not the big hug concerts.

This is just unbeatable! Great band, and Robin puts on a crowd-pleasing show, reminiscent of videos from his early days on washboard with TS on the streets. Real feel-good music!

Yes great that you recorded this set too. 👍🪄🎉🙏😊❤️
I remembered that Craig Flory couldn't play with the band so the brilliant Dennis Lichtmann replaced him on the clarinet.
    Dennis is marvelous too.
Last year he played with Shaye together, while she visited her family during summertime.
    Great tune.
It exists some vocals to the tune, but the band played it usually as a instrumental tune.
Best wishes Dave from Berlin Germany 👋

I miss Craig on the clarinet, but Dennis is much more than an adequate replacement. Todd sounds absolutely wonderful on his sousaphone today.
I don't know if this is because he's recently acquired a new instrument or because of the soundstage or the recordist or what. In the past he has seemed a bit ragged which is ridiculous since he's been playing the instrument for so long. His playing the tuba is the reason why the group has the name it does and he is an excellent musician. But today, for the second time I have noticed how smooth his playing is. There is absolutely no hesitation while moving from one note to the next and I have to assume that past problems were due to sticky valves or some similar problem. The instrument is behaving spectacularly. As a former tubist and sousaphonist it really makes me smile to hear Todd having such a rich and smooth sound.
How does one add superlatives to a group which is already so perfect that it is acknowledged by most as the best in the world. This is another outstanding performance and it always makes me wonder how when the group has to make a One-Shot substitution where is playing with somebody extra that they always manage to maintain their sound and perfection.

As usual, I don't miss a new UA-cam posting when Tuba Skinny shows up. As soon as I saw them, I noticed the hat on the man on the left, whose face is obscured by equipment. I thought "Dennis? Nah, this is in NOLA, so it couldn't be." But sure 'nuff. I guess The Hat Makes the Man.
