A couple things in this video hit me. First is scales are a lot of fun when you’re an engine builder and every experienced performance builder knows full well there is power to be gained removing weight from any piece that moves. And best yet, it’s free power too. Second thing that hit me was “it’s just a saw.” While we all know that’s true from one perspective, when you’re someone who is doing more than just slapping stock parts together and you’re actually modifying things, these are our creations. No one is ever going to build another one exactly like it even if it’s really close. Much like an artist with their painting or a singer with their song, this is the way us mechanical folks bring forth our creativity.
I know it's been a while but thanks for going through your buddies 038. I just acquired an 038 super and a 038 mag, both healthy runners. The mag is definitely my next user!! Cheer! Brian in Oregon
Such great saws aren’t they? A shade heavy but I’m not walking in the woods all day so who cares. I can’t wait to dig around inside the questionable 038 mag I’ve got and thankful for everything Tinman put on here about that build. Every build really.
Great video Tinman! I've got a Stihl TS400 cut off saw that I dont use a ton. Always thought it would be cool to turn it into a chainsaw. Maybe a big setup for milling. Then I spoke to a Stihl mechanic, and he explained that it would be a total re-engineering of the whole saw, not just bolting on a bar. Oh well. Keep up the good work sir!
Family = Safe...lol (Mr.Deeds). Changed the tail lights on my trailer today. It's already to go. Will be cutting in a couple of weeks. I cleaned up the piston on that nogo 272xp, used your goto moves on it. Good idea and info. TC Mahalo Tinman 🤙🤙🤙
Just south of Montreal, sticky and the Skeeters are hungry! But some early leaves are showing that the big cleaning before White Crap is starting. Early colors already….more shop time coming? 😂😊
Tinman I have both a 460 and 461 and I’ve run both back to back many times and I love both but the 460 wins it’s just better it has more power and for some reason it just feels better that’s my opinion
Iffn you put a Husky piston in a Stihl, you would have to cut the top of the cylinder, and possibly crown the top of the piston….then raise your ports to allow any timing you want? Could there be an advantage for all the additional work?
my ms 460 rod tips a little I know it's post to move left to right but tipping at top I'm not sureif you slide it all the way to the right at bottom and tip the top of rod it will go about a third of the way to the left with bottom of rod not moving
Question for you Tinman! So can you run a single ring on a piston that comes stock with 2 rings? I just ordered a new meteor piston for my MS460, so could i run 1 ring on that? Like take 1 off? Thanks man!
@tinmanssaws your awesome man! Watching countless videos of yours has Gave me the confidence to rip my 460 down and new piston and port it! Since it's my first port job, not gonna mess with the timing numbers, just gonna hog out the transfers and do a little grinding on the piston windows per your suggestion! Keep the videos coming man! Much love from Oregon USA!
Hey, dumb question from the new MS362C owner.... is it just me or is the oil pump like... stingy with the oil?? is there an upgrade that I can do to get more oil out to the 20" bar and chain??

You said a mouthful there! It shouldn't be THAT much fun trying to outsmart a conglomeration of various metals, but it IS!!
Down to the nitty gritty in grams. Most of us would never see the details you show. Thanks 👍

Love Friday night nights in the shop! I also like the old wood bench!!

It's amazing how much power you can free up by shaving weight!
I ran the 460 years ago loved it went 2 660 after it then went to 066 mag an been wit 1 ever since. The 460 are a tough ol saw!

I install elevator interiors so I handle tons of ss sheetmetal 3 new cuts today
Love it

⚙️🚲⚙️💥💨💨💨 Always a Pleasure. Thank you for sharing.
Hope all is well it was 111.F yesterday an 109 today in the sun i been goin home around noonish but srartn couple few hours eariler.
my 1969 stihl S10 has 2 rings. pretty sure west germany in the 1960s werent that worried about emmisions lol
1989 044: two rings. Also well before modern emissions restrictions.
If you grind on the piston "windows," do you worry about balance? How do you keep the weight distributed evenly? Or, does it matter?

How's the Tinman family
I'm a Manitoba guy. I understand you are too. I was looking to have 372 ported. Could we connect somehow?

They will have some side to side play that is normal. Up and down is bad.
Would the K970 cylinder layout be closer to a 575

Yep run the top ring only.

What happened to the L77? Any progress?
What about a Stihl Wristpin in a 372?

362 should have and adjustable oiler. Some googling should show you it’s location. That saw should oil a 20” quite heavily when opened up.
@@WildAcresFarms I’ve got it cranked all the way and it still looks waaaaay too dry to my tastes! Upgrades?
Late model 460 and early model 460 are not the same one has windows in the piston and the others are not.
