allow me to assail it then: source for the claim? i tried looking it up, i can't find a source that lists 183 world records by wayne gretzky. most i can come up with is 93, with 32 of those being unofficial. the other 61 were at the time of his retirement in the nhl, and some have been broken since.
Gretzky is one of the nicest people on the planet so when I saw the matchup I knew Tony would have a hard time finding 'dirt' on him...he donates to charities..still happily married to his model wife...promotes hockey and even rollarblade hockey to this day...is the ambassador for hockey at events...yeah Tony had a tough hill to climb...love the reaction!
And the fact that Gretzky ends the battle with "for true sports fans this was finished as soon as they heard the matchup" is so fitting cause it's honestly completely true.
That last bar about true sports fans made me smile, because that's exactly what happened. (Side note, the Flyers are a hockey team. Philadelphia Flyers.)
Some extra context for a bar not many people ever really notice! "You've been going downhill since Pro Skater 3" Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 release date October 28, 2001. Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam release date October 24, 2006. There is no WAY that was unintentional in the writing, not to mention...."downhill" would be a double because the ratings for Downhill Jam were of course way lower than Pro Skater 3. Absolutely a hard hitting bar for anyone that played Downhill Jam!
Gretzky is still considered the single best player by 80-90% of fans. He still has 61 active records. And he missed 3 seasons due to lockouts or other issues.
Gretzky could still be argued the GOAT of all sports. He has set insane records that will never ever be beat. He was so naturally gifted that at 9 he was playing against middle schoolers, and he was so good opposing parents complained to the league because he was nearly unstoppable. He may not have the championships as other athletes, but his records and stats are titans rising above everyone else.
In all fairness, for the outspun line; Tony set the record on regular skatepark equipment and the kid had an absurdly massive ramp so of course he was going to get more air and as such more time to spin. It’d be like setting the record for splitting the most cords of wood in one minute using a hatchet, and then someone comes by with a splitting maul and breaks your record! Wayne had the best burns, but Tony had the best flow
Deke may actually be a triple. The first and obvious reference is dick. The second is the one you mentioned about finger boarding. The third is a hockey reference, as the deke is the hockey equivalent to the crossover. Knew Gretzky was gonna win from the start.
To me, this one is ranked high because of the number of bars Gretzky should have ended the battle with. I'm giving him a little extra credit for how one sided the battle was
Poutine (from Tony's first verse is a Canadian dish of French fries with cheese curds on top smothered in HOT brown gravy so the curds melt Yes it is a heart attack on a plate.
I think the only bar you missed was "It's a street fight T Hawk". T-Hawk was a character from the game Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers :D And yeah, I thought Hawk was gonna win before I heard the battle, silly me (I just don't know ish about hockey lol)
Yay you took my request for my favorite erb! Thanks! Take a flyer down is also a team gretzky commonly beat. Arrival at cross check also doubles as "a rival at crosscheck" and 99 problems also refers to gretzkys number, which is 99
prepare for arrival and cross-check is what pilots say when preparing for arrival at an airport terminal, which would likely be commonly heard by hockey players who are frequently on the road
take a flyer down, bird bar has so many meanings, I'll show a few examples 1. taking tony down, who was known as bird man, or hawk which is a flying bird 2. taking down the Philadelphia flyers, which during Wayne's career with the oilers out of 12 play off season games that they played they won 8 of in two separate playoff seasons 3. it could also be a reference to knocking tony out of the air mid trick
I've seen you respond very well to the guy who played Wayne Greztky in this, and his other appearances in ERB songs. Might be worth you checking out his youtube. Don't know if it's anything worth reacting to. But he has some really funny stuff. There is a trilogy of songs about a duck. And a rap about an Aggressive bee. Legato Gelato is pretty fire too. Just something to think about and check out if you like his style. His name is Zach Sherwin and his youtube channel shares the name.
He also has a song with Watsky called “No e”, wherein they rap a full track without using any words that contain the letter “e” It’s a marvel to behold. I mean, try saying two sentences without using an “e” word… ~_~
Signal boosting by repeating a suggestion below: you should check out Zach Sherwin. He did a song about the F word (I think it's called F-bombs?) and to this day it's one of my favorites of his videos
Anyone catch the goofy-footed geek reference? Goofy-foot is a stance on the skateboard, where your back foot is the one you keep on the board when you use one foot to push off the ground to pick up speed. Regular is keeping your front foot on the board instead.
This is my favorite ERB. The end line of being done when I heard the match-up is 100% true for me. I read the title, wrinkled my nose, thought there's no way Hawk can even come close to Gretzky. Hawk did better than I thought he would, but from that far back, better does not mean well.
4:25-4:44 Your expression that whole time. . . Woah. Wayne: "There was one trick that you ever did/, then you got out spun by a 12-year-old kid Oh, you like fingertips? How 'bout one of these?/ Sit on this and rotate 900 degrees" "Let's skip the kickflips and mctwists You'll be speechless after 3 periods, like an ellipsis" DAMN! Wayne's comin' in the haymakers.
Kind of an older vid but it's fun to see people's reactions and connections to their lyrical references. I like the more retro style beat, it was supposed to be a more fun RB but it turned into one of the most savage ass beatings Hawk ever got lol
I know youve been on a massive content binge lately and I appreciate all the ERBs. Once your playlist is over, i hope youll swing back to Calliope Mori. She released two new music videos for the songs on her EP.
The world record line is one of the best lines in any ERB. But for any sports fans out there, be sure to look up Esther Vergeer, the goat of goats, most dominant athlete in their sport of all time.
There was a UA-camr who reacted to this ERB and at the start of the battle he said he's rooting for Gretzky because any real sports viewer knows whos the GOAT. and then when Gretzky's last line came through he went like I'm telling ya! so yes ERB were correct
1. I did have my money on tony til Wayne said that x games line. then I was like sorry Tony Things arent going GREATT for you. 2. Im more terrified that the third thing that popped up on my google screen after Wayne Gretzky's name was Wayne Gretzeky. the heck man
The Oiler alert does not work, the reason Gretzky was traded was that his contract would run out after the end of the upcoming season, and he was asking for far more than the Oilers could afford to pay, so the Oilers traded him to Los Angeles for 3 first round draft picks(89',91',and 93') Two solid but not star players, and 15 million in cash. He was not traded for declining talent, he was still in his twenties at that time, and hockey players do not significantly decline until their mid thirties. The Flyer Reference is from the 1985 stanley cup where the Oilers defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in 5 games and again in 1987 in seven games.
My ERB reaction playlist!

Still waiting for Nikola Tesla vs Thomas Edison. ;)
The record bar was just unassailable, there is nothing Hawk could say to that.
Again, to quote the Office: “How do you come back from that?” “You don’t. Not all the way.”
GOAT

"Talk about the X games" is the most savage bar between two living legends
I don't know, the world records line is pretty hard hitting.
@@cheeseburger12 that isn't savage, that's just straight up murder.
@@jovalin5939 so wouldn’t that make each of his other verses after that savage in the sense of it’s a brutal overkill?
The Xganes line was the kill shot ...the 183 line was the headshot double tap

"you'll be speechless after three periods, like an ellipsis." That line was straight fire.
As a canadian this is my favorite ERB, that record line is so savage
"I'll take a Flyer down, Bird" - a reference to his record against the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team.
That last bar about true sports fans made me smile, because that's exactly what happened.
(Side note, the Flyers are a hockey team. Philadelphia Flyers.)

A deke is when you fake a player out and go around them while still controlling the puck
yeah he was thinking of "finger boards".
Wayne was also known as the killer of the fliers, dude had some nutty stats vs Philly
Yup 3 periods in hockey. Ngl I would love to see you react to some hockey vids, we get CRAZY when a small black circle ⚫ aka puck is involved

In a cypher Tony gets the W but this is a battle. Wayne wrecked him
Plenty of reasons it doesn't actually say anything about Tony, problem is you can't do it in a battle.
Deke may actually be a triple. The first and obvious reference is dick. The second is the one you mentioned about finger boarding. The third is a hockey reference, as the deke is the hockey equivalent to the crossover.
Knew Gretzky was gonna win from the start.
Three periods is a triple too:
1. The obvious ellipsis dots
2. A game of hockey has three periods
3. They each have three verses in the battle
Gretzky might have the single best performance of any character in all ERBs
In terms of what? There are tons of erbs better than this.
Clint Eastwood is there most dominant
Bruh, Oppenheimer is definitely the best character performance
To me, this one is ranked high because of the number of bars Gretzky should have ended the battle with. I'm giving him a little extra credit for how one sided the battle was
@@rileyandmike No, everyone agrees it's Cleo vs Monroe. That is a fact.
Gretzky is known as "the great one" for a reason 👌

Yes it is a heart attack on a plate.
Now you understand why I wanted you to get to this one, Tony never had a chance. The writing on this was awesome.
The ellipsis bar was hard. Something that sounds like it came from a mainstream rapper. Not just a battle bar. Just a straight up BAR.

There are about 5 ERB's that are basically one sided, this is the only one that is COMEPLETLY one sided
I would argue that Stephen Douglas vs. Thomas Jefferson was more one sided. But I feel that was by design.

On this episode from ERB is the battle between two different skaters: X-Games NHL
Also your nose actually gives you a slight advantage in a fight, had a nose broken sideways a couple times, looks a lot harder with you.
You need to react to Wayne Gretzky, The Great One
The first thing I noticed was your hairstyle and your pleasant voice. There's nothing wrong with your nose, dude, you look great!
I just can't get over how pretty Peter's eyes are

Hmm. Maybe tomorrow.
Yessir. What destruction by Gretzky.
I too suppose I was not a true sports fan cause I was going for Hawk at first.
"I take a flyer down" flyers are a hockey team
The team out of Philadelphia is the Philadelphia Flyers, so the line about taking Hawk down as a Flyer it was a double on that.

The 2 best reactors at breaking these down are scru face jean, and Knox Hill.
I know that Dave is not ready for the savagery in this one. This is two to the chest and one to the head. No Cap.
The Pro Skater 3 line was the most devastating bar in this whole battle.

Wouldn't bet even a penny on Tony.
Tony's nickname "bridman" was just because his last name is hawk
