Originally, This song was about a Pet that MJ had lost while growing up. I think it was TITO's work setting up a trap for his pet. This incident was quite serious to MJ and was quite traumatic in his growing up years. Its one of the main reasons why he Loved animals and cared for them in his home when he grew up as an adult.
Co-incidentally, some movie producers wanted a child to sing a theme song for their movie BEN. This movie happens to be like a sequel to an earlier one called Willard. Both movies revolved in Rats. However in BEN the movie plot was quite horror in nature. Its about these colony of Rats that initially stops a boy from getting bullied. Eventually, the Rats go on a rampage killing many civilians.
The emotional feel of this song from MJ actually never could jive with the movie's plot. But this song Still remains such a great sentimental track till today.
