The lavabo/laundry sink, we call it “pileta”. It comes in plastic, metal or cement. The kitchen sink we call it “fregadero” cause it’s mainly used to “fregar (lavar) los trastes (platos, vasos, utencilios).
Also, la hielera we really call it “neverita”, usually “neverita de playa” because that’s what it’s used for the most or “cooler”.
I have to mention that I think your groceries might be that much because you’re buying local (I’m assuming you’re still going to the small market you showed in a video months ago where you recorded walking to it and everything). If you were to buy at a big chain it might be less, but buying local is always great help.
Also, the electricity problems with the power going out like that is because, you know, Maria. That was not a regular thing before Maria at least not in the center, north and east side of the island.
Nice tour and thanks for sharing!

I'm sure they keep the lights to a minimum. I find it difficult to live without the bare necessities. I consider $900 rent to be a little high. Especially when nothing is really included.

Since Maria (2 years ago), after we got power back we have had about 2 black out that lasted a whole day but since Maria almost every business have generators. Everything else is doing great and our beaches are some if not the best in the world. Tourism booming! Come on over!

@Tyler Harris all depends where you live in California. Been living here since 1990. Rent used to be $900 for an apartment in the Bay Area. Then it went up to $2-2500! We moved to the country and bought a house and the mortgage was $900. Sold that house. Now after a divorce, I rent a house. You do not want to know what I pay because COVID caused many people from the Bay Area to come up here and rent increased. However, I know people who are renting apartments and paying $800-900. So, it all really depends where you live. You can barely find rentals now. I’d like to move to PR even for a year since I was born in Arecibo and haven’t returned since we moved to the states. I was three years old when we left.

    • @vaquera9368

@Tyler Harris yeah I get it. We don’t have the hood or ghettos in this area. You’ll find that in So Cal. We have bears, mountain lions, deer, coyotes…lol. True. And the decent areas in So Cal are pricey. I live by Yosemite National Park. We do not even have gangs here. Cost of living is higher but so is the hourly wage. Definitely in cities you won’t be able to afford rent unless you live with roommates or family. Who knows, you might be able to find a decent place. I’m sure if you want it badly you’ll make it happen. Good luck.

I rent a 1 bedroom appartment in Toa Baja (near San Juan) completely furnished for $600, utilities included. Has ac in the bedroom for sleeping, cable tv internet etc. And its not a shoe box. And i never had issues renting it to locals who better know how renting works in PR. So you can now have a reference point...
For those who never been in PR, you need to come first and see prior committing to a long term lease.
Those comments that mentions people rented a house or apt for $350, probably is in a remote location, unfurnished (or old finishes), without utilities internet cable, or not in a nice area. So...Yes....you can pay less....but you will recieve less...and/or will live in a less desirable area.
Electricity and Water (utilities) are expensive, but can expect to pay between $80 to $140 with the ac on at night and do no waste it. Water you start paying around $28 .... using it or no...not like the electricity (thats the base block charge...note: you pay for water...sewage or disposal of used water...and a company fee which is expensive!!!). It a little bit more complex that that..but you have now an idea of how it works.
Food is similar to bit expensive that in the States. Local food DEPENDING where you go naught be cheap as $5 (some supermarkets sell local food cheaper....daily specials)..but dont expect to eat like a King for $3. Not in PR.

    @DonQ 5 років тому +7

I pay about $80/mo for internet here in upstate NY and get 35 megs. Electricity about the same as there in PR. Groceries a little less here, but not much. To get that apt here would cost roughtly $2000/mo. (and it would not be in Cabo Rojo which I ADORE!)

I was born in PR, i love and miss the place but I hate the cost of living there. Unless you have a secure job, living there is horrible. Poweroutages all the ime and you gotta pay for those outages repairs basicly. The water company is bad also, sometimes theres leeching of dirt and unknown stuff in the water with literally the director or ex director of the water company saying that the literally gross cream/yellow colored water was "ok to comsume" all you needed to do was add Tang(or Kool Aid) to the water and double wash your cloths to "try to make them clean". Gas (gasoline) there is like ~3$ a gallon(cause its taxed) heck everything there is taxed. 11% tax to everything. Want a 5$ fast food meal, its not 5$ its almost 6$ now. Also jobs there are really hard to come by cause one gotta have at least a Bachelor's Degree(yes at least that, no high school diploma) for a 7.25 job with exp and extra things from that job. Stayed there almost 2 years trying to look for a job applied everywhere , didn't find a thing... had to move to the US for a job and a life.

@@SpanishandGo I never have heard of repairs in the area being charged on a PREPA bill. What the bill does have that is confusing is an "adjustment for fuel" amount that they add to the KiloWattHr cost that is a coupe of cents over the standard cost. It's supposed to be related to the cost of fuel for generating power, but in reality it's a number they calculate to have the power company break even (expenses v income) since they cannot make a profit by law. Anyway that adjustment is pretty stable and our KWHr costs are around .22 - .25 cts.
I can think of two explanations. 1. They showed you an original PREPA bill pertaining to your specific apartment meter and they told you the adjustments shown are for repairs in the area, but that is not true. Perhaps they tried to say that PREPA charges for everything. They do, but it's prorated between all customers equally, not by area.
2, They showed you a bill made out by the apartment complex (or HOA) or landlord in which they (hopefully) detail your meter-measured consumption and then could add costs for repairs related to the apartment complex. That could be called "area repairs".
This 2nd explanation would account for your first bill being $30 something and the next $90, if the landlord or HOA made the bill and they pro-rated your consumption for your first partial billing=cycle month there.
In general the power bill has a KWHr cost which is multiplied by the actual metered consumption of KWHr which is detailed on the original bill. So, only your actual consumption would make your bill vary.

    • @jelatinosa

The electric bill is never clear cut, and they absolutely don't charge simply based on usage per kwh. They charge lo que les da la p*ta gana. My sister is living alone in my mom's house, and she's barely even there cause she travels often. One month that she wasn't even there and she shut the main breaker off, they charged her almost a hundred dollars. They charge more for my mother's home, despite usage because it's a large home in a "nicer" area where many wealthy people have moved to, so they assume the people who live there are wealthy and use a lot of resources. She went to complain and they admitted they never actually check the contador, they simply make an estimate based on the usage of the area. So because a wealthy 5 person family down the street, has central air on all day and have a pool and a bunch of electronics on all day, they charge my lone sister, who doesn't use AC or even has a tv, more based on "an estimate". She complained so hard that they finally went to check the meter and they completely eliminated the charge for that month because they had clearly been overcharging since who knows when was the last time they checked the meter. Probably when there was still my mom and both my sister and I living there full time.

Hi guys...love what you do. I live in Vega Alta (north shore of Puerto Rico). I saw that you paid $80 for 150mb internet with Liberty. I use Liberty and I pay $86.xx for 100mb, phone line and like basic cable channels (local channels + some US and Latin channels); I think if I pay $3 or $5 more I can get the upgrade to 150mb. Just check with the company or their webpage if you have the latest offer from them. Also water service cost can change if your house is connected to the sewer system or if it is on the country side and the use water goes to a Septic tank. Any ways you look like a lovely couple... keep the great work and take care.

For foreigners the puerto rican dialect and the mexican dialect obviously is completely different, which it does matter because some Mexican words can be offensive in Puerto Rico and vice versa. For instance when I say biscochito in puerto rico thats a cake while ive noticed that my Mexican neighbor did look at me weird lol because it means something else which I wont say here. In some other latin american countries could mean handsome or cute guy. In Bayamon PR lavado for us is cleaning our private parts which for Mexicans is the washing machine and/or laundry area. We call a cooler a neverita. Both beautiful cultures, people and language but for foreigners is best to know what it means in each country.

As a born and raised Puerto Rican I should tell you that the better deals on rent are based on "knowing" someone who "knows" someone else, knowing the abuela, tio, amigo or something to that extent who has a house for rent, that is how you'll score that super awesome house by the beach for $500 or that amazing mountain house for $400 (only "problem" is that you would be doing the yard work yourself but that can be fun if your into the garden stuff), if you go through a realtor your prices are going to be much much higher, I can guarantee you I can find a much cheaper house in that same area if I tried that way or maybe even a website called clasificados online which is very local and all the locals use it. unfortunately a lot of the economy in PR is underground.

I've been able to maintain the electricity bill in the $60's while living in an expensive area such as Hato Rey (San Juan). I've lived my whole life without AC, so we don't use it either... I think we are the only ones in our building without AC. I can't imagine what my neighbors pay in electricity. They easily must be in the $200+ or even $300+.

My wife is from DR and speaks Spanish fluently and my Spanish is pretty basic (except curse words, I have those mastered LOL). Anyway, we have the choice between Aguadilla and San Juan and we aren't sure which to choose. Any feed back from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

In places where the temperature may be a bit warm for comfort...one can use air-movers (Fans) instead of an air conditioner!
One can also use the air conditioner for a few minutes...shut it off...and let the air-mover or fan keep the cool air moving!
The electric use of air-movers is much less than air conditioners.

In tolls from there to San juan back and foward are like $10 at the end.

From where I live ( Yauco ) to San Juan is around $10 both ways . Which would be the same they pay if they travel from the south ( Ponce to San Juan ) . I almost never travel from the North . So no idea how much is the toll on that direction .

Here in Florida a 2 bedroom apartment is around 1200 aka Cardboard Box, walls are made so thin if someone farts inside their apartment you can hear it outside.Rent in Florida is high now a days and they will keep getting higher is ridiculous. My mom pays $350 a month in Isabela and the home she rents is what they would call in the U.S. a mansion.Puerto Rico's rent is cheap you just have to look cause it depends on the area.

Ese apartamento posiblemente pague como $600 al mes con todo y mantenimiento . Pero la gente que lo subrenta tiene que ganar algo . Ademas lo rentan amueblado . Suele ser mas caro .

What about mail? Can you order from amazon? How long does it take? Like if you wanted to do solar for those tiles you have outages... And no cell phones?

Hi! USPS delivers to Puerto Rico at normal rates, and Amazon Prime delivers in a week. We don't have solar panels, so we can't speak to that. But we never had any issues where we lived with our T-Mobile service. Thanks for watching! -Jim

You need to find out what day the electric and water do the meter reading and take a foto of the meter that morning. The utility companys will rip you off if you let them. In naguabo yo can rent a 2 bedroom house with a yard with avocado tree pana tree banana plants and mangoes grow every where the grocery store is alot cheaper and caguas(freshmart organic vegan food) and San Juan is alot closer. A frugal couple can live in naguabo for about $900 to $1000 a month comfortable.
