I very much appreciate your candid talk of the link strap, as I am contemplating the purchase of one, yet take to heart the reins-linking tying procedure you address. My hope this coming spring, to ride hard & NUG. Thanks again!

Johnnyreb, I have no idea what you are talking about! Or maybe we received dozens of PM's within the first hour of posting this video! LOL. Definitely forgot that one.

I tie my western lead rope around my horses neck, somewhat loosely, as in photos of Australian Light Horse and nearly all western cavarly/Indian movies John Wayne made. My understanding is that one soldier (dismounted) could hold his squad's horses as the others advanced into battle on foot. Not sure it was EVER really done in the U.S. cavalry. Was this done during the 1860's?
I find this handy if I want to lead my horse for whatever reason on the trail. Also easy to untie and tie to tree or hitching rail.

Were can i get a good reproduction m1860. I know there not great but what is the best place i can get a reproduction. Just has to look really good for wearing at my side or taking it out to show the public. Not for dance of the saber fairies

Nelson 123, I love how you mentioned saber fairy fighting! LOL. In that case, I STRONGLY recommend getting an original import from that period. They are very similar to the M1860 and the best you can get since they are original. You can get one for around $300. If you aren't going to fight with it, then that is your best bet.

11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry i feel that carrying an original does not extend the life of the sword Because i goes through all the riggers of a daily reenactment.

Any suggestions of a good sutler for a sword?

Unfortunately not. As long as it doesn't have the nut/screw on the back end/hilt then you should be good.

Gen. McClellen was not cavalry officer, he was infantry. He studied military tactics in Euorpe bringing home what he had seen there. From my study of the European system at the time the horses were tied to the neck strap or the saddle NEVER TO THE HEAD!

I will go with Doug Kidd's advice. NEVER link or tie horses using the reins or by attaching the link to the bits You can not count on a horse not trying to bolt and serious damage to the tongues can result. I hate to argue with you. This is an excellent video but tit should be stressed that this practice is dangerous.

Capt Dogbreath: We agree that it is easier, more reliable, and safer to use link straps but from a living history and public demonstration standpoint, it would be inaccurate to show the use of link straps as we use them today. Our study of the number and issue of link straps has shown that links were the exception rather than the rule. Our unit has been tying reins for the past year and we have not had any rodeos, damaged equipment, etc. All it takes is practice, drill, drill, and drill. Our challenge is to improve our accuracy and drill in a branch of reenacting that is frequently made fun of due to gross negligent farbisms. Our mission is to help improve all our drill and tactics on the field.
