I have to say it, I just discovered you guys today and I think that you are the sweetest family. I love that you all work together and it seems like you all respect and treat each other with kindness. It's just refreshing to see, so thank you!
THANK YOU!!!! This is the exact video I needed to see. I have three years worth of my sheeps wool which I have been afraid to ruin. Now I feel like I can try this! You have a new subscriber!!
This is so cool! My paternal grandma used to tell me stories of how her mom raised sheep but she carded the wool by hand. Also, they washed sheep in stream then took to shearing barn. Her mom dyed the wool & spun it into cloth to sell or make clothes for family. Yr video is visualizing this process for me. The!
Like the butter churn! We make butter for holiday meals. We used heavy cream in peanut butter jars. Pressed into butter mold. My kids liked to make it even today!
I used to make butter when I was a child my stepmother had me sit in chair or floor and just rock this gallon jar for a very long time until it started turning into butter stage. Funny thing is now as adult I do not like cow butter.
Thank you for showing this again! I guessed what it was right away! Pretty cool! Love the kitty! Foot pedal so that they could knit and make butter at the same time.
Amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing!!!! Very interesting! Cannot imagine having to go through this process to actually clothe my family!!! Hard work for sure!! Absolutely love the churn!!! I have several ceramic crocks\churns that work by use of a wooden paddle. I had never seen a churn like in the video!!!
Hello from sunny Northwest Florida 🌞 I would love to come and participate in some of your classes. Why must you be so far away?!?! 🤣 I am a new subscriber and I absolutely love your sweet little farm family. 💜
Hi! I'm from Chile, I love your videos. It's my dream to have sheep and be able to work with wool. I have a question, the second washing of the wool is also with warm water? Thank you for sharing this beautiful process with us!!
I love this video and it brings back memories of me spinning as a child. I never knew this process and it makes me want to come and volunteer for experience. I would like to know how to buy a large bag of wool. Thank you for teaching me.
Okay, about the Butter Churn, it takes 5 minutes to make butter out of cream when the cream is ROOM TEMPERATURE. If the cream is cold from the refrigerator, it'll take for freaking EVER. In Junior Girl Scouts, we made butter from cream, salt, and shook it in a Ball Mason Jar, firmly lidded. It took 30+ minutes to warm up and start climbing up the walls of the jar. From there is took only 5 minutes. The salt kills any bacteria that would attempt to grow in the butter. Enjoy!
I am in the process of doing this right now and there’s a lot of pieces of twigs and grass and such in the wool I have. The wash with dawn is taking the dirt and lanolin out and then after I dry it is the picking going to remove the small pieces?
You will need to further pick the wool after drying and even after that you will likely still have some. The carding process will remove most of the smaller particles. Each step in the process will remove more of the bits.
Hi, I just got some wool that someone had wrapped in a tarp and wasn't using. There's quite a bit of really small straw pieces in there, I'm picking out the big stuff, but there's like small bits, less than a cm long. Will it come out during washing and carding, or is the wool kinda unusable for making roving? Thanks
The small little bits will come out during the entire process. You will likely have some very small debris remaining at the end but it should not have an impact on spinning the wool.
Great video, the new mic made a big difference - it sounds great! I love the cats - lucifer was so curious about the carding machine! Do you make those machines yourself or do you buy them complete?
I would have thought the real reason to was to get the dirt out! What is the difference between cutting and pulling it apart used to make small amounts of butter using my blender.
Is it possible to over wash the wool; not in the sense of pushing/squeezing it, but in the sense of soaking it many times to get the final product as white as possible?
Think of felting as "dread locks". It is when the wool gets tangled and matted. A common product made with wool are dryer balls that are purposely felted to be used in your dryer along with optional essential oils. If you search Google for felted wool projects you can find a large assortment. Of course you want to felt your wool after its clean 😊I believe we went over felting in the live stream that was posted to our channel 3 months ago. ua-cam.com/video/sA8gUXK8v2U/v-deo.html
Wow! That guy really likes to point out how the others don't really work hard or their failings. Everyone watches T.V. and just happen to get some of the work done at the same time. The young woman hasn't mastered the hand eye work( she looks fine to me). He, of course, just hasn't the patience for it, which I suspect means he hasn't mastered it.
@@The10AcreWoods yes, indeed! Teamwork can be key to things. Being able to do things well and doing things fluidly, mastering, are different. Thank you.
Men say they don't have the patience for a lot of things that traditionally fall to women. Odd! Related: I enjoyed the peek into the way this family does things, but would have liked to hear from the women who actually know how to do them. Mansplaining is a little irritating.
Nix the kitty was so cute playing with all that fluffy wool!! Thrilled with the mid-week video!!!

Thank you so much!! Yes we are forsure in this as a team.
I had absolutely no idea that I was so interested in all aspects of wool! But I'm happy with it.

Thanks Wendy, great to hear. Happy Carding 😊
How nice for people to give you stuff like that that's awesome thank you for the video I really enjoyed them Northern California
Glad you enjoyed it.
The cat was the best part 🤣🤣
Love the black cat. Wish I found this 30 yrs ago.
Love the sweet little pouchie watching over the whole process!
Us too!

wow! I am so inspired
We normally wear woolen clothes but there’s lot of hard work behind that wool omg!
I loved watching the wool class! And I actually knew that was a butter churn!
Tara now wants to make butter 😁
Love love love that churn!!!
Yes, will one day make our own for sure. Was a gift from a very good friend who found it on kijiji
Thank you. I’m doing some of my fleeces I haven’t quite gotten to and I needed a refresher before I did it again. :)
You are so welcome!
When I was small and disobedient I’d have to/get to make butter. It was the plunger type. Good stuff, hard work

I really, truly loved this.
Thank you 😊
Wow you daughter and wife work very hard. After the animals. The wool. And yes. As they watch TV.
They sure do, keep the hands busy Tara always says, multitasking
Thank you! This was so neat to watch during our sheep farm lesson with Gather Round Homeschool ❤️
That's wonderful to hear, thanks for your comment 💕

what a great video really enjoyed it, love your cat 🇬🇧😊

Yes, lots of work to make clothes. The plan is to spin and knit later.
If you hold onto the wool from drawing into the carder, you get wool building up on the licker, not onto the drum.
Thanks for the tip
good job mark thanks for the info

Love it!!

Awesome video 🤗

I would check with a local sheep farmer, due to the price of raw wool they have problems even selling it.
Is there a way to keep some of the lanolin? How do you separate it from the dirty water?
Boil and the lanolin seperates(floats) dirt sinks

does it still smell like sheep ? id love to keep sheep one day. i have taken care of them but never worked with the wool before (only store bought)
Not intense but slightly

I guessed that contraption was a butter churn because I spent time in Morocco. They use animal hides and toss them in the air.
Correct, Tara wants to make some butter with it at some point.

hello Really wonderful. I am in Mongolia. Our sheep's wool is almost free. How do I get the equipment?
We just searched online, there may be some groups in your area that may be able to point you in the right place, locally.
I’ve been looking for an old butter churn
Thank you! What is the spinning wheel called and is there a link for it?
:)
You got it, it's called a spinning wheel, just do a search on Google and you should find a bunch, maybe Craig's List?
@@The10AcreWoods Altight! Thank you also for the great video!
WOW so cool 😎 but looks like a lot of work to make yarn.
It is! But also very satisfying
I came for the cat
We have 6 now, all are black and all are rescued. 😊
Wow that's a lot of work. How long does it take to process 1 sheep from beginning to end?
Never added it up but for a week, steady
Great video, the new mic made a big difference - it sounds great! I love the cats - lucifer was so curious about the carding machine! Do you make those machines yourself or do you buy them complete?
Great, you found the other videos 👍. We purchased the equipment, Tara is always looking for deals 😊
What is the micron count
sheep wool?
28-33 for canadian arcott
From where we can buy this tools you use for wool
New they can be quite expensive try searching Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji eBay, Craigslist or even eBay and Amazon.
how many hours would you say this whole process takes?
The entire time to process one fleece would probably take about 2 to 3 weeks from cleaning to spinning.
I would have thought the real reason to was to get the dirt out! What is the difference between cutting and pulling it apart used to make small amounts of butter using my blender.
You heat the lanolin which releases the dirt.
@@The10AcreWoods i finally figured some things out after watching more. Thank you for responding and helping to clarify for me.
What is the machine called? I kept trying to catch the name, but think I missed it.
Are you speaking of the Wool Carder?
@@The10AcreWoods yes! Thank you so much!
Hello guys ! How is the garden ?
Frozen now lol, but we had a good first year.
Is it a butter barrel/churn x
Correct, it's a butter churn 👍
@@The10AcreWoods sorry I answered before I got to the end lol I like to watch other people doing the process as it's always different to how I do it x
Is it possible to over wash the wool; not in the sense of pushing/squeezing it, but in the sense of soaking it many times to get the final product as white as possible?
No, the only problem would be that the more you handle it the better the chance of felting it as you mentioned.
@@The10AcreWoods What exactly is felting, and why does that occur? Would felting reverse at all with lots of carding?

It’s an ice cream maker?! Or a butter maker??
Ding, Ding, Ding... A butter churn it is 🎉
The 10 Acre Woods
Going to try and milk the ladies next year? 😝
What’s the name of that machine ?
It's called a wool carder.
Washing machine?
Do not want to clog it with lanolin, but for sure an old used one might work
Washing the sheep wool..i could not hear if it was jot or cold water.....
Hot releases the lanolin which is a grease the sheep produce
What happened with momma cat and her babies?
Tara here,
Inara the black cat mom from this year and her two black kitten's (Rhea and Lucifer) are now part of our family
That is a barrel
Thank you for repeating the video. This one is much better- easier to focus on what you're trying to teach :)
Thanks Nicole 😊
