  • In this video I build a cherry monitor stand with a continuous grain walnut drawer. I show how I layout my dovetails, how to cut a housing dado by hand, and how to use a plough plane. Hope you enjoy it.

Great to see you back in the shed and posting. Everyone's keen to see you make stuff but plenty of us know that business and life take up so much time! Let the channel be a release rather than an added pressure and we'll catch up with you whenever you're here!

A nice glass of whiskey, a bowl of tobacco, and the smell of sawdust, I can't think of a better combination. Beautiful project, thank you for sharing!

Great "small" project John. Nice to see how our skills can be used for all kinds of things like this and that even with just hand tools it doesn't take that long to make something beautiful that will last a lifetime.

Great to see you back. I always enjoy your videos. I think you should treat yourself to a router plane. They're just as fun as a plough.

I did mine 900 x 400mm pallet wood panel on 130mm legs with stretchers. Table saw, #5 bench plane & a block plane. No drawer as I my skills aren't there yet. Nice project John. Take care & stay safe.

I appreciate you pointing out the mistake. I've just begun practicing dovetails, and I find myself getting discouraged at times because everyone else's dovetails look perfect while mine resemble the mistake you made (the only difference being that all of my dovetails have the same issue, not just one 😂)

    • @JohnMcGrathManInShed

Keep at it, no one made perfect dovetails without plenty of practice.

Great project, nice to see you back in action. Fair play for making this so accessible, you simplify everything. Also nice to acknowledge the errors.
I have built your mitre station, it’s working a treat and was such a straightforward build.

I'd put a small strip on the bottom of the drawer that stops the keyboard from going to far in. If it does, instead of moving the stand to get it, you pull out the drawer then push back in.

Maybe ya done it to explain better, but my handtool mindset was shoutin 😂 i mark dovetails the same way, but id step off from both sides, then mark the top end and the face at the same time with that gauge...... Im savin time anywhere i can coz hand tool stuff is kinda slow 😂 but aye, can understand why ya migt have done that to explain better 😁
On another note; your videos aint gettin recommended to me anymore...... I had to go to your channel to see this, thought "havent seen the lad in a while, i may go check on em" 😳 maybe a more "catchy" clickbate title is in order...... There no harm in that, if UA-cam is a source of your wage then its only natural to "work" to your advantage so more people see it.
Good to see ya again lad, love from Wexico (Wexford) 😁

Good to see you back John. I saw a dovetail video a couple of days ago where he said that if you're sawing slightly off the line, DON'T TRY TO CORRECT IT, keep cutting straight. If you do you _will_ end up with a gap as you demonstrated. He said one slightly differently angled edge is much less obvious. Found it, 5:40 here.... ua-cam.com/video/Se-bRIRG7Y4/v-deo.html
