Thanks for watching, let me know if you have any questions! I highly recommend watching: Top Final Cut Pro Settings to Change Before You Start Editing! ua-cam.com/video/-RiaeumnoRc/v-deo.html
I just watched this video again because I forgot how and honestly even tho I copied my project to another external HD, this is the best simplest UA-cam tutorial on this topic.
So many convoluted videos out there on this topic, that actually don't even get around to mentioning THIS procedure (external manual backup basically)!! Great video, well done.
Very helpful, thanks a lot. If I have “leave files in place” selected, will moving the project to the external library take the clips and stuff with it or will it be just the project itself. Thanks.
Thank you so much for this!! Super helpful! Quick question- in another video you had different settings for saving the cache, backups, etc straight to the hard drive but this one you say to keep it in library. Which do you recommend? I would really appreciate more clarity on that. Thank you again!
Quick question, when you say "project" do you mean it in the colloquial sense, or the way Final Cut Pro means "project." I'm ultimately trying to move the entire video creation to an external drive without breaking it
How do i move a project with all related files on one external hard drive to another external hard drive. I do not get the fcpbundle extension during the process on your video.
Thanks for this informative video. Do you think it's okay to create a new library for each editing project we work on? It seems to keep things more organized for me. Thanks!
Hi Tony, thank you for your comment and feedback! It is absolutely fine to create a new library for each project, especially if that project has many clips from different cameras or days of shooting. Personally, I categorise my libraries based on the type of project I’m working on. For example, one library for UA-cam videos, one for client work etc. That way I can easily move clips from different projects within the same library. Regardless of what method you use, make sure to always have a backup of the original clips! :)
Hi, if you move a library to an external hard drive, does it also move the projects and keep them intact - in other words, would my project still be there so I could continue to edit it ? Thanks.
Yes Kevin, that is entirely possible. My advice is to first open the library from the external drive to make sure everything is carried over and works properly before then deleting the library from your MacBook

Great to hear your feedback, thank you!
Lots of confusing FCPX backup videos out there, but this one was short, concise and clear - THANK YOU!
Great to hear!

Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant! Clear and explains everything, from the very basics - thank you very much!
That is great to hear, thank you!
I usually do not comment but this was great! Much better and easer than the top recommendation videos!
Thank you so much for your comment!

Awesome, exactly what I needed! Thank you!
That is great to hear, glad the video helped! :)
Exactly what I needed. Thank you!!!
Good to hear, Final Cut Pro is a great program, but not always that easy to understand

You’re welcome 😊

Can I move my library to an external hard drive that's formatted in exfat?
Yes, that should be no problem
how do you copy to an existing library? i'm following the same steps, but my pre-existing libraries are not available to select... thanks!
Hi, I cover how to move libraries to an external drive in a different tutorial of mine 😃 ua-cam.com/video/mMWfVjFdgKw/v-deo.html
Hi - I tried following these steps exactly but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be doing anything for me. Any troubleshooting advice?
Quick, easy, excellent. Thanks brother 🥰
Glad to help! 👍
Should I delete the media in Local library then?
What about consolidation of the files?
Hi Eren, I need more info before I can react.
can you then delete the libary on your macbook to save space and work off the external?
Yes Kevin, that is entirely possible. My advice is to first open the library from the external drive to make sure everything is carried over and works properly before then deleting the library from your MacBook
Can you do this on final cut 7
Hi Kenny, that is a long time ago. I have little experience with the final cut 7. Probably, but not sure
Thanks much
Brilliant
my library is currently at 850gb with around 39 projects
I moved my projects onto an external hard drive and they now say 'missing file'
