    Depends on the lure. A walking plug like this Skitter Walk or Zara Spook (my favorite) work best on a medium retrieve, too fast or too slow will kill its natural mullet-like swimming action. Now a popper like a Chug-Bug can be worked much faster or slower with better results. Also gotta consider the surface conditions... dead calm, mirror smooth water = slower retrieve. Choppy or flowing water requires you to pick up the pace. Trout love when you pause the lure, but reds tend to like a steady retrieve, same with tarpon. Snook can go either way. Lots of variables in play here, thus the default answer is it depends / have to experiment.

    Have you guys ever done a video on how to change our hooks for top lures? I’d like to know how you do it and what hooks you suggest. Thanks.

    For Skidder Walks or Spooks, a medium speed twitch, twitch, twitch, twitch, followed by a long pause, has worked best for me most of the time. Poppers usually need to be worked a bit slower to produce that good gurgling sound. If it's dead calm conditions, I do slow it down a bit to start, then speed things up a bit until you get a bite.

    I've struggled to get that walk the dog action. It seems between each twitch your line goes slack so maybe that's what I'm doing wrong as I thought you had to keep tension on the line.

    So when you started out you said you were using a walk the dog style such as a spook. But you were reeling it straight in? At least I didn't see you moving your Rod tip at all. So were you just basically reeling it straight in? And pausing it?

    I agree with John Moore, it depends on the lure AND also, you forgot to mention about what kind of knot to enhance the performance of walking the dog.

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong 4 роки тому +1

      There are so many factors at play that is makes it tough to make all-encompassing claims, so this video would have been 30 minutes long if we tried to account for everything. As for knots, the loop knot is best for most plugs, but a snug knot is better if the plug comes with a split ring at the top as described in this post: www.saltstrong.com/articles/loop-knot-vs-split-ring/

      @@Saltstrong Agreed, so many variables are not mentioned to provide best performance and many points missed. Might be good to provide a 2 part video cap off better elaborate for best performance. There are so many amateurs who are clueless to the "what else " can enhance a prelude to optimal performance AND growth. Thanks.

    What’s the water depth? How far will they come up for a top water lure?

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong 4 роки тому +2

      This video was on a shallow flat that was around 2ft deep at that time. There isn't a max distance fish will travel... sometimes they'll come up 10+ ft, and sometimes they won't bother coming up 10 inches.
