The deceptive mind

  • Daniel asks John for advice on how to stop his mind attacking him. "It seems as though my mind has it in for me - at its worst, as if it's trying to kill me. Why would a human mind do that to itself?" John replies by finding the undivided. "The mental idea called 'I, me , mine - my' separation from God, wants to be noticed. But before the simple light of truth, it is darkness and confusion - a deceptive wolf in sheep's clothing."

John you put it so well and so simple when your face clears the top of that paper and you rise above it. im practicing over and over and watching your videos brings me a new strength and a feeling that in the end it will all be ok. thank you John for gracing us with your wisdom. im a loyal follower and always will be. thanks for getting me through the tough.

Your videos have helped me so much, thank you. I’ve stopped ruminating which has been a big problem for me and caused lots of depressed times. I realize how many problems our brain creates for us - it creates needs, and when we don’t live up to these needs, we feel a lack in life, and become depressed. I have really become more aware of this - the needs - we can totally live without them, they do not threaten us on life, if they are not met. Instead, we should focus on just being in the silence, do things just for the sake of doing them if they are valuable for us and others, and just stay in the present, without great needs of status or other ambitions, caused by an ever increasing dynamic and hyper marketing social media global world. We are who we are, and that is enough.

Apart from some small points, this all could very well come from, say a Buddhist. The “rising and falling”, which John refers to is a typical Buddhist way of describing the fleeting nature of the world. It’s a beautiful thing to realise that these ideas or descriptions refer, ultimately, to the same, one truth, which is beyond description.

When I was learning to meditate, I thought I had to KILL my mind. I finally came to the realization after A LOT meditation and present moment awareness that, through the process, I was MAKING PEACE with my mind. Both the right and left hemispheres come together. Your brain’s frequency changes and true MAGIC happens. Drama falls away. Dramatic people seem to just move out of your life.
Honestly , when you meditate, you are creating quantum mental space for greater possibilities to come. I am still surprised , even today, at how miraculous this regular practice is. It has completely changed my life for the better. ❤️from Phoenix, Az🍀

Mindfulness puts a lot of emphasis on "listening", but what about our other senses? For example, I find it relaxing feeling the sun and gentle breeze on a 75 degree day walking or hiking where there's woods and mountains. How about feeling. Recent I took a trip to Colorado, and park on the side of a road where the Big Timber Mountains were, and there was a creek with clear flowing water. I crawled down to get to this creek, took my shoes off, and placed my feet in the water! Though it was cold, ot felt like my feet were being kissed with oil! The sun brighten my face and it felt like I was alive!
Mindfulness isn't avout just listening and silence. It's about feeling with all of your senses in that silence. The sensations, the smells, the seeing of the beauty of God's creation. All that comes together and brings you peace and clarity. Best feeling in the world.
I struggle with silence, because I'm hyperactive by the way.😁 A foolish mind utters everything in it. But a sound mind...there's wisdom. So yes, I'm foolish, but working on it. 😁✌

Why does my mind attack me? Because you are a sinner, like us all. You have the human problem of sin in you, Daniel. That’s why Jesus came and died, to save us from our sins.
John, Jesus did not mean resist not evil when we are dealing with our own sin, the flesh and the devil. We are meant to fight it, with His strength and only with His strength can we do that.
On the other hand, Jesus did say resist not evil when someone (a person) does wrong to us, i.e. don’t retaliate.
‘But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also’ (Matthew 5:39 KJV)
You have to look at the context of scripture.

I find it honorable that even though John is a person who isn't really willing to stand firmly on orthodox Christianity, he is still bold enough to insist that there is a terrible place of outer darkness for those who reject God (or...whatever he thinks is that perfect peace). I too believe that the real terror and horror of what we call "Hell" (it has like...a hundred names) is less a burning lake of sulfur (though there might be such a thing) but rather the terrible absence of God and with His absence the absence of all good things (love, peace, friendship, hope, happiness, faith, etc.)
I have suffered from depression and I have been in great physical pain. Of the two, I'd rather have the physical pain than to feel that gnawing emptiness in my heart. I believe that the scariest part about Hell is that terrible loneliness and despair. The realization that even though you turned from God at every opportunity, He was still there taking care of you and being your friend. The realization that now that you have what you wanted - a life without Him - you realize that life is no life at all - and it is too late.
Fortunately, God has not left us orphans. God has made a way for us to be restored to Him what was lost in our sin through the person and works of Jesus Christ - who died on a cross to take that terrible fate from us and onto Himself. Having swallowed up death, He rose again, and now lives forever at the right hand of the Father in Heaven to intercede and save completely those who put their trust in Him.
Now to Him who is able to do above and beyond all we could ever dream or hope for - to Him be glory and honor and praise forever! Amen!

Saying it this way is very misleading. Something that APPEARS to be cruel can be kind. But then it's not actually cruel, is it? Unless you are very clear in your mind, I would leave any apparent cruelty to God. Also, the word "cruel" almost implies a destructive intention rather than a kind one, so I frankly think this term is badly chosen.

    • @pascalhassenpflug3401
      @pascalhassenpflug3401 4 роки тому

@@mikeq5807 Steven Mitchell thinks that just means impartiality (as I read it from his comments in his translation of the Tao). I could also see it to mean that all egos are treated as insubstantial. IMO it certainly doesn't mean that cruelty is somehow preferred to or always a part of kindness, (and I feel that John's quote is misleading in that way, so I'd rather point this out).

God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.
‘God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.’ John 4:24
    See also: Job 11:7-9; Ps. 90:2; Jas. 1:17; Ex. 3:14; Ps. 147:5; Rev. 4:8; 15:4; Ex. 34:6-7.
It so sad to see someone trying to give spiritual ‘wisdom’ and they don’t even know who God is.
Especially seeing as God has come in person, in the form of his only son Jesus Christ who came and died for the sins of those who trust in him and who rose again and who is sitting at the right hand of God, who will return to this earth to judge it.
For [there is] one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5 KJV).

There's a scripture in the bible that says be still and know that I am God.

"How can you argue about silence"

In my experience, there appears to be more than one kind of "silence;" the first kind is the silence you try to hear, it's rather mundane, distinctly flat, thoughts and stimuli come and go, interspersed with vague spaciousness, neutral or vaguely pleasant. Small awareness, tenuously aware of a small awareness. Nothing spectacular.
The second kind is much more profound and _cannot_ be invoked by the will: it's when the Silence hears _you._ Completely different phenomena. I've long-given up hope that I'll ever experience that again. So be it. Beer helps.

When I try and listen behind the sounds I just hear a ringing in my head. Is that silence?
