I appreciate the lyric change for Toby. “Well let’s say, he’s square” to “He is wise and square.” A massive improvement from the original. It makes it much more welcoming and fitting for our Oldie Goldie Toby.
Being someone getting back into this show after years of having nothing to do with it, (mostly due to being forced out of liking it around 2014) this actually made me extremely happy, especially considering the fact that there is clearly so much effort and care put into this! Its nice to see when I get back into something I loved so much as a kid!
I swear to god if you go back to the 60's and 70's with these song covers, they'd probably be actual platinum hits! Great work anyways HH, I've always kinda regarded Engine Roll Call as a guilty pleasure and this cover is just FANTASTIC!
Man this whole song makes so nostalgic! This was my childhood, growing up in the hit era (don’t worry I’ve seen all classic seasons I’m not a fake fan). Some of my favorite parts were: - Gordon’s line always got to me - the bouncy instrumental bridge before the CAE part - the whole last part from the chorus after CAE to the end just…man you are a genius!
This is what the theme song could have sounded if the TV series started airing in the 1960s edit: The cost of not only running but maintaining the engines, rolling stock, equipment, employee salaries, etc. must be through the roof.
I imagine it isn't as intense in the books; the only really "new" engines are Pip and Emma, and there are hundreds more HST sets and the multitude of spare parts to go with them. HSTs still run on the mainland; remove the NWR lettering and the BR Intercity blue and yellow and they would fit right in.
While that could be true, what is the cost of maintaining a fleet of engines that are more than or nearing the 100 year mark, with the diesels, excluding pip and ema, probably reaching the 60-70 mark now. The amount of parts you have to have manufactured just for required maintenance would be a lot. While I don't doubt for a moment the hat family wouldn't have stockpiled spares, the problem still remains of needing to make new ones. If you can give me a realistic sized list of companies, each specializing with something, that could realistically work in the area that Sodor is supposed to be in, I will gladly shut up and take that answer and be satisfied.
@@randompersonwhocomments3645 I can point out: There are many heritage railways and mainline-certified steamies all over Britain that, if combined, would equal the NWR workforce. Most of the engines used date from the Grouping; some from before, and others are older still - Stepney was built in 1875, and Talyllyn and Dolgoch (by extension Skarloey and Rheneas) were built in the 1860s. In addition, diesels like the Class 37 and 47, built in the 1960s, are still in operational mainline service, and the Great Central Railway is looking to re-bridge the Loughborough Gap to complete the full route. The GCR acts like a mini-NWR, with its own mainline, period signalling and rolling stock. Sodor is quite a large area in its own right; in the Rev. Awdry's maps it creates a narrow channel between Sodor and the Isle of Man. While engines like Edward and James would be at risk, having no siblings to speak of, there are multiple examples of Black Fives like Henry and Great Western models like Duck and Oliver. Not to mention locomotives can share parts, and indeed the Bluebell Railway owns an LBSCR E4 'Birch Grove', which is basically a larger E2 with trailing wheels. You do make a point that creating quality spare parts for steamers is not easy - the boiler for 60163 Tornado was built in Meiningen Works in Germany, a facility that dedicates itself to maintaining steamers all over Europe. (The rest of the locomotive was built in Darlington Works.) You also make a point that the costs would be through the roof, which is why many of the heritage railways depend on funding to run and are usually quite small and contained.
I take your points and they make sense. I will now stop talking and let you go do more important things than this, but this information that you have given me has given me a fresh perspective on rail preservation in Europe; I am eternally grateful for this wealth of information you have given me. Once again, I will now stop talking and once again I will say thank you for the information and have a good day.
@@randompersonwhocomments3645 No problem at all. Every version from the HiT era. I didn't even know that there was another version of it in a game, but these main three appeared in the main series, so yeah. As for the BWBA version, we don't count that version.
If this how the theme was composed when the format changed, I don’t think people would have hated it as much. Nothing can replace the original of course but this would have been catchy as hell
There could not be any other better song to have introduced me to you and your spectacular talents than the one I grew up with and treasured my whole life, the Engine Roll Call. It is an absolute banger, and it always has me snapping my fingers along with it. I hope you keep up the out of this world work you do.
HH, I just gotta say, thanks! I grew up listening to engine roll call all the time after each episode as a kid. I go back to listen from time to time tor nostalgia, but I gotta admit, it always makes me feel silly afterward. Engine roll call and really any music from season 8 or so onward sound DISTINCTLY like they’re from some stupid kids show. Your covers on many of the songs from this series puts a more mature spin on them, which I as a fan in his early 20s greatly appreciates. So again, thank you! Keep up the good work 👍
Another great music piece! You never cease to amaze me with what you bring out. I found myself tapping my foot to this all the way through! Stay safe everyone! And make sure you wash those buffers! -Jack
Headmaster Hastings, a massive well done. Now I can actually listen to roll call song without massively cringing, unlike the original roll cal song. I salute you.
Dude this is one of your best the way you combine the roll calls from calling all engines and the Great Discovery had me swinging. And I can listen to this for hours on end. I absolutely enjoyed this keep up the good work.

I've always thought that I was in the minority in terms of actually liking this song. Pleasantly surprised that I'm wrong. It helps that this is a really good cover. Love that 50s/60s style here. Seems like Thomas music adapts very well to that early Beatles era. "Classic" you might kinda say. XD (inside-ish joke)
@@headmasterhastings4884 I guess it was just the babyish tunes Robert did in his early days on the show. The song sounded much better in the series 19 version, HOTR cover, and of course yours.
Fantastic as always! I love how you combined all the different versions of the song! Although I've always wondered what lyrics could be added for Duck, Donald, Douglas and Oliver...
Duck! Waddles or so he says Donald! The one Topham had bought Douglas! Won't leave his twin behind! Oliver! Saved from the scrap line BoCo! The last of his kind! Murdoch! The strongest on the island! Daisy! Please don't make her mad Fergus! Always wants it right!

Yep
I love it
100 %
it even still has the original meaning in it, which was that he thinks square. That was the joke, if no one got it.
Yeah, that always kind of threw me off a bit as a kid. I’m glad he made a change with it.
My 3 favorite parts of this song:
1:18-1:38 "Geek Music" styled tune.
1:39-2:01 Calling All Engines tune.
2:24-2:47 The Great Discovery tune.
Exactly! =)
I Agree
I like it :)
The singer for All the engines: *nice descriptions*
The singer for Toby: He's square.
he is a box though.
Henry doesn't get a good description either
Toby is a box
