    I've never heard any Raff before; that sinfonietta clip was superb. I want it !

    Dave, I hope we will get a video on the Mozart piano trios soon! I need to refresh my collection...

    Dave, thanks for covering the Raff Sinfonietta; as the clip you played demonstrates, it is a lovely and perfectly orchestrated piece which deserves to be better known. We'll have to part company on Strauss's workshops - as with anything poor performances lead to poor results, but overall I think they are magnificent if densely Romantic works. I had a very light breakfast, it may be time to look into a Grand Panera.

    Thanks for the overview. There are also excellent works for various wind groupings written by composers such as Beethoven, Danzi, and Reicha.

    The German composer Carl Reinecke (1824-1910) wrote a sextet and octet for winds.

    I think, Poulenc and Francaix both were great composers for wind ensembles.

    Carl Nielsen wrote an attractive wind quintet. It's easy to miss, but well worth discovery.

    Delightful works! The combined
    Prague Wind Quintet and Miami Wind Quintet (that’s Miami U. of Ohio) made a wonderful recording of the Gounod accompanied by Hummel’s Octet-Partita and the rarer Divertissement by Emile Bernard on a Mastersound CD. These were recorded in Prague in 1994, so don’t know if they’re still available. Also my recording of the Strauss Serenade, Op. 7 with Zinman and the Tonhalle Orch Zurich takes over 8 minutes and doesn’t sound slow. How could the Netherlanders do it in 2+ minutes?

    Isn't Krommer's Partita's for wind ensemble not considered good enough to mention? (They are played lovingly by the philidor ensemble on Calliope) Lovely video as always! Thank You!

      First, I mentioned them in another sequel video (to Haydn's Op. 33) and second, he was a contemporary of Mozart working out of the same school, whereas I was talking about music that postdates that school.

    Strauss Op. 7 is a fantastic work...but only 2:23 in that recording? It's around a 9 minute work typically.
    I have tried to find a copy of the Raff disc, but have only found one copy available and at an outrageous price. That's what happens when things go out of print. It is also one of the things that bothered me about the Raff box. It would have been even more enjoyable if they had included the concertos and other misc works that Tudor has in their catalog.
    Going to go get my gran Panera now... 😋

      Yes, of course it is. The timing on the disc is a misprint.

      @@DavesClassicalGuide Indeed, the lost art of proofreading. Lovely piece though. Very good video... I love music for wind ensemble and have been buying the stuff up like crazy in the past couple of weeks, but there is always more to add to the pile.

    Great video. But Herbst symphonie means Autumn (or fall in American English) symphony,not winter. I don't speak German but remember the second song in Mahler's Lied von der Erde about a lonely man in autumn/fall (Ein einsame im Herbst)

      I knew that! I mean, I sort of speak German. That's the problem with amateur video. Damn. Thanks.

    Where does Stravinsky's octet fit into this tradition? (Thanks for the great video!)

    • @DavesClassicalGuide
      @DavesClassicalGuide  3 роки тому +1

      It doesn't really, other than being a work of Stravinsky's "neoclassical" period.

    What about Berg’s Chamber Concerto for piano, violin, and 13 wind instruments? Speaking of which, have you heard Boulez’s recording of the gran partita?

      1. What about it? 2. Should I?

    • @boccherinifanatic8356
      @boccherinifanatic8356 3 роки тому

      Well, it’s a sequel after all. I think the Boulez is a fine performance. Though it’s clearly not Boulez’s specialty.

    How do Holst's lovely works for military band fit in here?

    What about wind quintet & Franz Danzi? Is it a totally different tradition?

    • @DavesClassicalGuide
      @DavesClassicalGuide  3 роки тому +1

      Not really--it's the same school, although the wind quintet was a new invention and, as i think you imply, its single lasting legacy.

      I'm still not much into wind ensembles, but already heard Hindemith, Schoenberg & Ligeti.
