  • The good and experienced nurses are leaving! What do you have to say about that? Hire foreigners because they will do better?! What about language barrier, their monies being sent to their home country and all the other disadvantages!
Treat nurses better! Be nicer! Yes we are getting paid to do our job but do not abuse and disrespect us.
Nursing is a blessing but is very challenging and physically demanding! Lack of support from the relevant bodies, heavy workload, poor work environment and structure, hostility, little to no promotion and recognition of qualifications and bullying could all cause nurses to flee.
The same people who can help you forget that they too were once in your shoes when they get promoted. A healthcare system without nurses will not function because nurses are the backbone of healthcare.

Hey Reems,I have been a registered nurse for 14 long years now.Like you I have had some very good experiences but have gone through hell.I have thought on many occasions of migrating but what keeps me back is my family.Just the thought of being so far away and not being able to be there to care for them.I am holding on by a thread.I don't blame the many nurses who have migrated and are planning to because I have experienced my fair share of unfairness, abuse, working in toxic environment and the list goes on and on.Nusing has been placed on the back burner, the persons or organizations we entrust with our well being and job security continue to disappoint as time and time again. No one seems to care.We suffer silently and are expected to show up and give the best of ourselves.Girl it is frustrating. Some days I feel like leaving and never returning.Being a hardworking, pursuing a higher degree is no longer what is required for upward mobility but rather who likes you or whether u belong to a curtain sisterhood.Despite what we go through I and many dedicated nurses out there continue to do our best but how much more can we endure.

14 years of service is a very long time Jacqueline. What is your position at work now? I agree to holding on by a thread. You want to migrate but you also want to stay back to care for your family in the event something happens to them. You want a change, new environment, better working conditions, pay and to accomplish more for yourself and family but you remain here. Most of the experienced and good nurses have left so you question whether you should leave too because you feel like "who will care for your family." The people who can help make healthcare and nursing better only care when they are nurses or at a certain position. Surprisingly, the same people who advocate for nurses and patient safety change their tongues when they become promoted and reach a certain position. They forget where the came from and what it was like to be a bedside nurse. Many of them feel like they got their fair share so the now nurses should experience the same thing if not worst. Nursing in Saint Lucia is very discouraging for a young nurse especially if she is ambitious, career focused and want to have a bright future. It is true that we suffer silently. Most times I cry my insides out when I get home because of the abuse from all angles, trauma and bad experiences I encounter. Yet I try to keep a positive mindset and pray. Forget upward mobility even if you get outstanding appraisals, have multiple degrees and certificates and are an exceptional worker. If you do not have friends in high places or do not kiss bams then forget it. Nurses who come after you get promoted before you and the ministry never looks into it. Plus if you get blacklisted for speaking out or as they say being "insubordinate" then you are done. It is very frustrating feeling like there is no one to air my concers and ideas to because I have tried so many times and to so many people. Everybody brushes you off because what you say does not matter to them neither does it affect them. I feel sorry for the country, the people and the nurses who are affected. Healthcare is a disaster in Saint Lucia and no one but the "bedside" nurses seem to care. Then we get blamed for whatever happens even though we are overworked, burnt out, have high patient ratios most times who are dependent and of high acuity, stressed out on all levels and the list continues. Then they wonder why nurses are so bitter. You carry all your work stress home to your family and isolate yourself to deal with your internal wounds. Nurses I say to you, the longest rope has an end. Do not be bitter or let your family suffer. Continue doing your best with the little that you have. This too someday shall pass. #nursesrock

Well Rema totally agree with. Nurses are migrating works wide for better pay and professional development. I migrated for professional development. Migrating to another country is not a bed of roses. It has it's challenges. But at the end it's the persons mind set. Im in the UK the pay is so not worth it but the opportunities are so diverse.

At the end of the day we have to care of ourselves, I preach this daily to my colleagues. That your mental health is more important than anything else.

    • @reemssonson
      @reemssonson  2 роки тому

I agree Beverly. Most times it seems impossible to take care of yourself at work. Sometimes the patients are heavily dependent, there is a code, you get admissions, have to deal with irate relatives plus patients, take work related calls, document, perform multiple doctor order, do health teachings and education and so so so many things for just that one nurse most times. It is A LOT. You put yourself last and by the time you get to sit to eat or give your feet a break, you hear, "the nurses always sitting, they always on their phone, they always this and that." Other times you remain hungry or forget to eat. Go home with your bag packed the same way as when you left home. As it relates to mental health, most nurses suffer from depression.

I think you pretty much summed up all of the struggles that we nurses face in St. Lucia. But honestly nurses migrating to another country will not change the system here. The change has to come from key stakeholders in our healthcare system. Apparently, they are not bothered with providing nurses with the respect that we deserve. Not too long ago, nursing used to be a recognized as a noble profession. Now a lot of people are just getting into it for the financial benefits that may accompany it. Sigh! Its been a tought ride but in all i keep myself grounded and always remember why i became a nurse; which is to help people. I always give 100% with my patients and knowing that I made them feel a lil better each day is worth it to me.

I agree that the change has to come from the key stakeholders Blessed Babes. A lot more can be done to improve the healthcare system. As it relates to nurses going in it for the money, I see it differently. There are so many professions making much more money than nurses here in Saint Lucia. Plus, one would seek payment with every career because it takes time, money and dedication to complete one's study. Nurses do not get paid adequately for the work that they do so it is a bit outdated to say that nurses do nursing just for the money. That is good you are keeping yourself grounded and remembering why you became a nurse. Keep it up.

Migrating for me seemed an easy decision when I left because I wanted to be where my family was. But getting there, boy did I want to return. When I hear stories of staff shortages back home I can’t help but feel guilty. Especially since the situation is not much better here and it is much more emotionally taxing not having co workers who understand your culture. At the end of the day, wherever you are, it’s important to ensure self care. That’s the only way to keep a level head and be able to care for our patients.

Family is everything. That is understandable that you feel guilty knowing you could have nursed your people back to optimum health and wellness. Migrating is a risk and remaining in Saint Lucia is a risk. Everything in life is risky, we just have to know what is worth risking and what is worth taking a risk for. Self care is paramount indeed.

Stay there and try to change the system. Become a nurse advocate. Raise funds for resources, people may donate.

Wow some great ideas! Thank you! Agreed! I am trying to change what does not want to be changed and is seen to have no problem. It is just like advising people who think they need no advice or help and that you need it more than them. Pointless but some day may be things will change for the best.

nothing but the truth in the videos and in the comment section. I have always thought it to be true that if the avenues were better for our own nurses many would not have left family behind to migrate. even in the abscence of immediate gratification for further studies , knowing that there is upward mobility can increase comfort but even that is lacking. mental health amongst the staff is of concern. I am not sure what is in place however being faced with what nurses encounter requires debriefing. otherwise one would find that persons can grow cold or accustomed to what is not mentally healthy for them. I wish hope and pray the best for the health care organisations of St lucia.

I agree Janel. Better avenues are needed for nurses. It is true that one can remain patient if they are not promoted as soon as they are done with their degree but knowing the promotion will not come is something else. Knowing there is upward mobility can increase comfort indeed.

Hey Reems. A lot of what you said is nothing but the truth. I know I can pick a lot of reasons from your list as to why I migrated. I also understand why a lot of people choose not to because I was so attached to my mom and this has been the hardest part for me- not being around my family. Like another nurse mentioned under your vlog when it comes to professional development and benefits offered migration is a plus but salary wise uncle Sam ain't keeping it in your pocket. The salary appears big when it's US/ pounds/Canadian to EC but by the time you take care of your obligations especially when you are with the agency it's reduced to nothing. Budgeting becomes your best friend. I would say however the opportunity for upward mobility is endless and that means the opportunity for a better paying job. Your degree is recognized, you are promoted automatically to the grade that fits your level of nursing experience, you are a stakeholder in the organization an so your opinion matters ( well at least at the organization I work), the organization knows the stress of the job and even if a lot of nurses don't use the resources there are resources that help with coping with stress and ones mental health. You also get to self- schedule, major holidays are alternated so that one set don't get it off all the time, etc. Nursing is a demanding n stressful job. Nursing is Nursing no matter where you go. The same staff shortages, the same high ratios and now client care is more complex and as a result the risks and criticisms are even more, would you believe even health aids are an issue too. It takes focus, self motivation and a desire to take steps to move yourself forward to get out of that Nursing cycle. Well that's my end goal to GET OUT!!

Staying in Saint Lucia right now is really a choice. With the amount of health agencies hungry for nurses, it is a competitive market where agencies combat each other for nurses. You do not know where to go because you have many options with lucrative packages for you and your family. I wish I had the courage to leave now Tessa. Attachment to your relatives can really prevent your from leaving. A nurse mentioned that some of us are staying back for our relatives instead of living our lives and being in a better position to help them. Whilst it is true, it is still challenging for some of us to leave our home country and everything we know behind. Thank you for your comment as an international nurse! I see from your comment that migrating comes with its own drawbacks. I love the fact that there is the probability of upward mobility when one migrates. In Saint Lucia, it is almost like you remain stuck in the same position irrespective of the degree you made so many sacrifices and cried for. Management will even mention that you are a young nurse why would you want to leave bedside nursing. The disrespect! It is like you have to remain a bedside nurse for all your nursing years but I understand that there are so many nurses who can become managers or hold other positions. If we all leave bedside nursing, who will care for the sick at the hospital basically is their argument. Some do not want nurses to get promoted because it took them a long time for themselves to get promoted. They fail to realize that that is what is causing so many nurses to migrate. Some say we are easily replaceable so let us see what happens. Nursing overseas is diverse. There are so many things a nurse can do and become. I wish that nurses would get promoted automatically with each degree completed. You earn the degree and do not use it on the job here. You even forget what you learn. It is the culture in Saint Lucia to keep nurses at the bedside. There are little to no job openings when one completes their degree. Even when one is available, friends in high places already have their friends to fill it out. Most times the friends are not as qualified as you and cannot get the job done. People are only concerned about themselves and have hidden agendas that is why our healthcare system continues to fail. Even basic things like asking nurses how they want to work for the week could make a difference. You are given two requests per month and sometimes you do not get the time off when requested and that further causes bitterness. Nursing is nursing everywhere for true. Better structure, more respect for nurses on all ends, better benefits and involvement in decision making are things that could limit the high number of nurses leaving Saint Lucia. It just feels like we are the enemy. For sure nurses are not stakeholders here. The representative bodies remain quiet and continue to let nurses suffer in silence because they are not the ones suffering. I agree the end goal is to GET OUT!
