Aside from entertaining and informative content, one of the major (pun unintended) reasons I tune into this channel is simply to enjoy listening to Jake speak, the way he articulates his ideas is a sonic delight to me !
From idea to conception: this is entirely excellent. I love your closing thoughts and demo example too; really helps demonstrate the evolution of songwriting
Take that Beta Max, VHS is here to stay! Great work with the production, instruction! See ya next time, and Star Licks better make a beefy offer for SMS contracts!
Drummer here (of a sort). I don't have much of an ear, but the Equally Tempered/Perfectly Tempered demonstration was so perfect and clear. And mind blowing! Interestingly, the difference was clearer to me when I watched the video than when I listened with my eyes closed.
I really admire this analytic approach to music. That's what a great producer should be like. I've had the honor to work with a few prodigies, like you. Maximum respect for the music theory knowledge. Hats off, I really like your videos. I only wish I could understand more of them! :D Keep up the great work!!
The guitar solo did seem more mild than it should have been though. Typically, you expect to hear dive bombs and really flashy bits like a Van Halen solo typically is. This solo was more just simple and straight forward like the styles that came about 15 years earlier than this timeframe.
To me it sounded like nicely produced nothing. The song pretty much sums up why 80s glam metal died. Cliches, unoriginality, not very good rip-off riffs (main riff sucked), lack of energy, lack of attitude. It sounds almost like a parody of the genre. For its purposes (teaching) it is good effort, as a song meh.
All the nuances ... the interstitial stuff ... is what makes this video extra great. All the stuff you're saying is actually a relief because now I don't feel I have to invest the time to figure out practical music theory ... playing the B bass for the G chord because it's the first inversion ... simple but not obvious.
After playing live, producing, writing etc for over 40 years, I have to say this is an excellent dissection of what is Involved with creating something and taking it from an idea to a finished product.
Ok, I'm about 24 mins in and I have to say this about not using the minor third, nor the major third, but bending up from the minor third to not quite the major third. I GET IT!!!! I remember having that very conversation with other musicians, this would have been in the late 80's or early 90's. I totally get what you're saying. It's a feel thing. There's something there that should be delved into for sure. Music, like math, doesn't always fit inside the perfectly divisible. Sometimes we need micro tonals to make things better. There's an explanation I'm sure. Gotta tell ya, I discovered you recently on UA-cam, you have the knack of making complicated things understandable. I've been eating up your content, practicing the 7 modes of the major scale, loving Phrygian, Lydian, and Locrian, and now exploring the modes of Harmonic Minor, all thanks to you. Keep rocking, your content is incredible.
As i started to worry and say.. huh... man jake hasnt uploaded in a whi- 40 MINUTES? YES PLEASE. Great video as always man but... that snare... it aint 80's if it doesnt have a shit ton of reverb. Keep it up!
I graduaed high school in 1985 So .... this is my generation of music and can confidently say that you succeeded in emulating the 80s hard rock glam band and in the process showing people that haven't been there what the writing recording producing process is like, even for one simple radio friendly song a lot of work goes into it. Thanks for all that I've been learning from your videos Jake, ... I seriously appreciate your passion for music !
Jake, you are The Dude. No BS, no fluff, just solid theory and production. Still waiting for Jake to embrace that Bari-Bass voice and drop his country album…

Because of this pandemic, my finances currently look like a tuna salad got into a fight with a jello mold, but I am gonna sign up for your Patreon as soon as I'm able.
Michael Anthony would be SO PROUD to hear you wailing away on one note for an entire riff.
Excellent, pure brilliance, a must to hear and see.
I usually don't listen to this genre of music, but your song is still very enjoyable!
Man what's better than your music is the advices you give
I've learned so much things from your channel "theory" and "non-theory" things
already know all about mixolydian from your poster 😎
but seriously your poster is really good. thanks a lot, so useful for writing and jamming.
I was actually going to buy it a while back. Only thing that kept me from buying it was is the only size 18x24? I'd buy it if it was that size, but the site says "other sizes" and doesn't let me pick a bigger size and I'd rather have something bigger. If it exists. Is the site buggy or is the only size 18x24?
Redder01 I ordered it three weeks ago; how long does it take to arrive? 🤔
Teesprings Customer Service states they’d respond in 24 hours... four days ago. 🙄
@@DrErnieGibson it didn't take me that long, about a week.
@@josephperez4319 there's only one size i think. i dont have a ruler, but it seems like 1.5x an a3 size. imagine an a3 piece of paper but a bit bigger.
This is awesome! I grew up on the Sunset Strip in the 80's when hair metal ruled, you all did a great job.
PS: I think you're wasting your talent, if I were you I'd contact every major record label and ask to get in on song writing teams. Your musical knowledge could help any song writing effort I'm convinced of that.
It could probably pass as an ACDC song! It has that vibe to it, great job! There's some kiss and GnR in there too
Dunno about ACDC, to me it felt more like Mötley Crüe or Poison.
This is one of the better videos on song composition that I've seen. It explains the whole process more succinctly than others. Great video.
Speaking of A Major, and A minor,
C Major chord asks his relative if he wants to go have a drink in the bar.
Relative says, "I can't. I'm A minor."
Have you been inducted in the hall of fame yet?
“I can’t, I’m A minor, and I’d B suspended. “

Yup, this sounds exactly like something out of the 80s and if someone said it was a big hit at the time I would believe it. The singer of this is superb and really has the 80s scream down.
That intro to this video reminded me of Ben Stiller in Zoolander! Love the seemingly natural communication of Signals Music Studios, a natural Musical genius! So packed full of knowledge you can watch it a endlessly and learn more every time! THANKS!
This is a super deep dive, and I really appreciate you walking us through what you wrote and DIDN'T use. I just found your channel yesterday, but this is really informative. Thank you!
Thanks Jake, now I can finally write the songs I've been envisioning in my head for the past 3 years
Aside from entertaining and informative content, one of the major (pun unintended) reasons I tune into this channel is simply to enjoy listening to Jake speak, the way he articulates his ideas is a sonic delight to me !
As an 80s kid, I would’ve rocked out on it in highschool 35 years ago!!!
Wooaaahoooo woooahhoooo you gonna get whats coming to ya!!!!
This is my favorite UA-cam channel. No matter what level you are, there’s always something to learn here
Hey Jake. I´ve recently discovered your channel and must say, all your "lessons" are top notch. Thanks for that!
Jake, great video. I can’t believe it took me 10 minutes to notice the mask on the our lovely friend in the back.
thx bro! theres also a mask on the llama, got keep him safe
This is definitely one of the best videos you’ve made
Is beard stank even real?? Asking on behalf of a hive of sentient bees.
i'm very sorry but no, you died long ago and I used CGI to replace you in this video :(
Yes its possible
@@SignalsMusicStudio A very selfless maneuver!
Hammer time!
Jake you the G.O.A.T of UA-cam Music Theory Lessons . Just thought you should know that
Yessss finally!!! I've been looking forward to this :)
I really admire this analytic approach to music. That's what a great producer should be like. I've had the honor to work with a few prodigies, like you. Maximum respect for the music theory knowledge. Hats off, I really like your videos. I only wish I could understand more of them! :D Keep up the great work!!
This is legitimately a really good song, and I'm not even big into the style.
The guitar solo did seem more mild than it should have been though. Typically, you expect to hear dive bombs and really flashy bits like a Van Halen solo typically is. This solo was more just simple and straight forward like the styles that came about 15 years earlier than this timeframe.
@@trebmaster Jake is alot of things but he's definitely not a flashy player , very effective non the less.
@@kkarx so glam metal died bcz glam metal is garbage
I agree
All the nuances ... the interstitial stuff ... is what makes this video extra great. All the stuff you're saying is actually a relief because now I don't feel I have to invest the time to figure out practical music theory ... playing the B bass for the G chord because it's the first inversion ... simple but not obvious.
Darn it, I wanted the whole video to be the vhs format lol...
I think you are the best teacher in the whole internet. THANKS for your lessons.
The dislikes are gonna get what's comming to them
Yeaaah! *Nothing* can stop what is coming!
You guys rock, so true. Karma comes around
No
Wax on Wax off 👋
After playing live, producing, writing etc for over 40 years, I have to say this is an excellent dissection of what is Involved with creating something and taking it from an idea to a finished product.

I legit heard the lick in my head as i read that
Better than to become a banana
Keep it up!
I graduaed high school in 1985
So .... this is my generation of music and can confidently say that you succeeded in emulating the 80s hard rock glam band and in the process showing people that haven't been there what the writing recording producing process is like, even for one simple radio friendly song a lot of work goes into it.
Thanks for all that I've been learning from your videos Jake,
... I seriously appreciate your passion for music !
12:55 right after i saw this "Why didn't Frusciante tune his guitar?!" video ua-cam.com/video/Daw93bRHe4Y/v-deo.html :D
AMAZING....Right off a Poison CD! CC Deville eat your heart out! Great track!
Jake: You did implant the ear worm. Hearing it in my head as a I do yard work.
Jake, you are The Dude.
No BS, no fluff, just solid theory and production.
Still waiting for Jake to embrace that Bari-Bass voice and drop his country album…
I pretty much spend every day depressed and sad until i see a new signals music video.
This is why you are the best guitar teacher on UA-cam. All of y’all did a great job!
PROTIP: For some extra Steel Panther vibe, extend "com" to at least a quarter note.
What makes this likeable as much as the music is the obvious fun that you guys had making the video -- especially the drummer :D
That is so Warrant, Firehouse, Ratt, Poison, Winger, Firehouse, Mötley Crüe, Great White, Cinderella, and Skid Row, all mixed up into one song.
Jake - you're amazing! The amount of effort you put into the hilarious intros, the great lessons and the side effects is INCREDIBLE!
Lack of audio sync at the beginning cracked me up! Just like a VHS tape...
All that was missing was some "pan and scan."
You nailed this! As someone who was a teen in the early 80s, I would have totally blasted this in my car!
quoting a movie I forgot the tittle: "when did motley crue became classic rock!?"
That's definitely the song "1985" by Bowling For Soup
Love how you dissect the magician's hat and show exactly where that rabbit's coming from. Bless you!
Is it me or Eddie looks shredded in that thumbnail picture? Pun Intended
This is possibly the greatest thing on the internet.
Mixolydian - The Movie, by LordLizzioMetal666
Great job breaking everything down. I am really impressed with the time give to all the little details in both the music and video production.
As Adam Neely said constantly: repitition legitimizes
Geeze, those vocals are off the charts. Thanks, for showing how it all came together.
OMG I can't believe this video is 40 minutes long! It was so pleasant to watch that it seamed like only 10 minutes have passed. :) Great content.
The song was really awesome, it (virtually) brought me back to the eighties. The best part? The breakdown of the entire thing, and seeing the sausage being made, every little bit by bit. Thank you so much - you and Kerry Devine and Beardstank. A lot of work, but most definitely appreciated by this viewer!
