  • The Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, commonly known as the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar, is one of the most significant religious sites in Spain and an iconic symbol of Zaragoza. Located on the banks of the Ebro River, it is a place of pilgrimage and devotion for Catholics from around the world.
The history of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar dates back to the 1st century AD. According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to the Apostle Saint James on a pillar made of jasper and requested the construction of a church at the site. The pillar, believed to be the same one, is venerated inside the basilica.
The basilica showcases a blend of architectural styles due to its extended construction period. The original Romanesque structure was built in the 12th century, followed by subsequent additions and renovations in the Baroque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles. The result is a stunning fusion of architectural elements.
The basilica's exterior is characterized by its multiple domes, towers, and intricate ornamentation. The central dome is topped with a lantern, while the towers on either side provide panoramic views of Zaragoza. The façade is adorned with sculptures and reliefs depicting biblical scenes and saints.
Interior: The interior of the basilica is equally impressive. The main altar, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is adorned with ornate decorations and religious artwork. The Holy Chapel, where the pillar is housed, is a revered space for prayer and contemplation. The frescoes, paintings, and sculptures within the basilica contribute to its grandeur.
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar is intimately linked to the annual El Pilar Festival, also known as the Fiestas del Pilar. Held in October, it is one of the most important festivals in Zaragoza. The celebration includes processions, music, dancing, cultural events, and a spectacular fireworks display.
The basilica holds great significance for Catholics, who come from all over the world to pay homage to the Virgin Mary. The pillar is a revered object of veneration, and many pilgrims touch or kiss it as a sign of devotion. The basilica's status as a pilgrimage site attracts millions of visitors each year.
The Aljafería Palace is an awe-inspiring fortress located in Zaragoza, Spain. It is one of the most significant examples of Islamic architecture in Spain and stands as a testament to the city's multicultural heritage. Here's some information about this historic palace:
The Aljafería Palace was constructed in the 11th century during the Taifa Kingdom of Zaragoza. It served as the residence of the Banu Hud dynasty, who ruled the region at that time. The palace was initially built as a fortified palace-fortress and later underwent several expansions and modifications under different rulers.
The Aljafería Palace showcases a blend of Islamic, Moorish, and Christian architectural styles due to its complex history. The original structure is characterized by its defensive walls, towers, and courtyards, reminiscent of the Al-Andalus period. The palace also features stunning architectural details such as horseshoe arches, intricately carved plasterwork, and geometric patterns.
The palace complex is composed of several sections and courtyards. The most notable areas include the Mosque Courtyard (Patio de la Mezquita), which features a beautiful portico with horseshoe arches and delicate plasterwork, and the Throne Room (Salón del Trono), an exquisite space adorned with ornate decorations and a magnificent dome.
After the Christian reconquest of Zaragoza in the 12th century, the Aljafería Palace underwent significant alterations to adapt it for Christian use. The Palace of the Catholic Kings (Palacio de los Reyes Católicos) was added, incorporating Gothic and Renaissance elements. The coexistence of Islamic and Christian architectural styles within the same complex is a unique feature of the Aljafería Palace.
In the 20th century, the Aljafería Palace underwent extensive restoration to preserve its historical and architectural value. Today, it serves as the seat of the regional Parliament of Aragon. Visitors can explore its magnificent rooms, halls, and gardens, which have been beautifully restored to showcase the palace's original splendor.
The Aljafería Palace is a captivating historical site that reflects the Islamic and Christian influences that have shaped Spain's history. Its intricate architectural details, stunning courtyards, and rich cultural significance make it a must-visit attraction for those interested in exploring Zaragoza's multicultural heritage.

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar is such a beautiful, elegant and awe-inspiring 😍 ♡♡♡ After the ascension of Jesus.. The Holy Mary who was still alive in AD 40, appeared to St. James who was preaching the Gospel in Spain. She assured him that Christians faith would be as strong and durable as the pillar on which she stood and As Mary promised, James successfully completed his evangelical work in Spain. It's seen as a holy place that has a spiritual holy power because there were many miracles 🙏 There are a lot of beautiful structures in Zaragoza with a long history 😃
