Great summation comment…. “This is really all you need.” Absolutely correct. The Orient diver collections are just KILLIN’ it!!! I have two Kamasu, two baby tritons, and a Mako 2.
As an Orient fan, I loved this unapologetic Orient geek-fest. Too much fun. I love the new Mako 3, the grey dial looks great, and I loved it on the brown leather and grey fabric straps you had it on. This one will be joining the Mako II and Ray II Raven in my collection as soon as I see one at a good price. Thanks for this Orient-oriented episode.
I must say that this channel is by far the one, if not the best around. From the content to the context, to the way of presentation. Solid, staight to the point, there is no single minute I would call boring. Always informative, objective and interesting - love the perfect narration. Not to mention the look - edit, sound etc. All the best, keep up the fantastic work !!!
I personally appreciate the history lesson. Especially since I’m fairly new to watches. It looks like some sellers are calling it the Kamasu Mako 3. Which makes sense I suppose. When prices come down a bit, I am for sure getting the white dial. Thanks for the great review! Oh and I like the numerals.
Great review as usual. I own both a blue Mako USA II and a black Kamasu and love them both. Modded both with LIW bezels and ceramic inserts. Two points: Firstly, the Mako USA was basically a custom watch ordered by the US distributor “Orient Watch USA” and thus was originally only available through the Orient USA store (and sold only to the USA and Canada). Later, they allowed Marc from Long Island Watch to sell the Mako USA II at the end of their production. Secondly the Kamasu was named by Orient Watch USA through a voting poll sent out to customers. So it was actually fans that voted on the final name.
Great to see that you still have your red Kamasu with you : ) I got mine (red dial) around the same time as yours. Even though, i dont wear it much, it is still part of my collection.
Beautiful! The colour combo works for me with the gunmetal dial, the earthy bezel colour with gilt and orange accents. And thank god it's got sapphire! 😅
Longines and Breitling also have dive watch dials similar to this. Makes all three stand out versus boring subs. One of these Super Makos may be my next Orient. Good review.
I'm definitely a fan of the Orient Mako Kamasu Kanno Ray Tristar 3000. All kidding aside I like the arabics, makes it more versatile looking to me. Kind of a field/ dive watch, or what we call in the south, a sinkhole watch.
Thanks Shane for another great review. I appreciate the backstory of Orient and recognize the effort you put forth in creating this video. Nice job in summarizing the situation. The Mako 3 looks good but it seems like I always go back to consider the Kamasu…one of these days I might have to pull the trigger! Thanks again!
I just got the Orient Baby Triton, the bronze case painted and green dial, I'm ready to love it and behold it for the rest of my life, to each its own I say.
Great video! And it reminds me that I used to watch your channel 1 or 2 years ago, then I can't remember. Until the notification of this video. Glad I watched it 😊
It’s always the bracelet… I put my Kamasu on a jubilee with solid end links and a better partially milled clasp and transformed the watch, and one of my favorite watches… A collection of ever 60. I’ll do the same with this one and it’ll be awesome.!
I loved my red Kamasu. It went missing a couple of years ago and I mis it terribly. Oddly enough two other Orients are missing. My Mako XL with a full lume dial, and my champaign colored Ranger. I still have my green Defender 2 and a Nami with a carbon fiber dial. I need to find those watches.
I'm feeling old watching this Shane as I'm wearing my old orange bezel 44.5mm Mako XL, which I think I bought sometime around 2011 with its shake to wake non hacking 46943 movement. I think it came out sometime between the first and second Mako releases. Still one of my favourite watches, excellent timekeeping, accidentally magnetized it a few years so took the opportunity to have it serviced and it's running at +1 spd! You do need a wrist on the larger side with its 51mm lug to lug but I think 7.25" and above is fine. I do like this new one whatever people want to call it and excellent review as always!
I recently chose the green Baby Triton. Horizontal Day-Date can look dated, or it can look vintage-inspired. To me it always looks dated on the Orient dive watches, or on any contemporary dive watch, tbh. But the colorways of these are outstanding and unique and it was a close thing for me and for the price it sure seems like owning both is a an option. I like that these colorways are really different, which gives a reason to consider these over the Kamasu. I also think the Arabic Indices provide the same inherent value.
Thanks shane, it's nice to see an entry level Orient diver again. I never had the regular Mako 2 but the Ray 2 in blue was my first entry level modern diver before buying an SKX and going deep down this rabbit hole of dive watches. The regular Mako with arabics has always seemed to have weaker lume than the Ray line and the USA lines but even though I never bought a Mako, I always liked the look. I still have that Ray and did a minor mod on it to get a tapered bracelet and sapphire. Still have the white and black versions of the USA 2. So yes the drawbacks are continuing with the small crown and untapered bracelet. I don't even really mind pressed clasps as they often feel slimmer than milled. Orient will probably always stay in my collection.
I actually found the crown on the Mako 3 to be far superior to the one on the Kamasu. The teeth are more aggressive giving much better grip. I kept hold of my strapcode Kamasu bracelet when I sold it, so i swapped out the OEM bracelet as soon as it arrived
Any name with a three , means a sapphire crystal ,,,, Ray three ,round indices,Mako 3 Arabic numerals, slightly larger crown ,two tone bezel, Kamasu rectangle indices ,,,, but all have sapphire crystal , F6922 movements and all have gorgeous colours
Funny enough you're right, whenever you come in my mind, the first thing that pops up next is that red Kamasu... Cheers Shane, happy you continue the Orient's Divers Saga, looks like you'll be the source for it in the future. Be well mate.
Doood - you taking off the specs the way you do means awesome lecture ahead 😄👍! Fab review and I think you're right about this new Mako (or whatever it's going to be called) - it's simply not interesting enough in all regards, particulary a step down in design-language compared to the sharp and consistent barracuda look of the red Kamasu. Sadly the bezel spring (I guess?) of my own Kamasu broke after 1 year, it's now a 60 click turn with a wobbly feel, but still love the look of it. Heard about quite some issues with the Kamasu bezel, after I started researching the topic...
I am an Orient fan. Comparing this piece with my blue Kamasu on a Long Island Watch bracelet I have to go with the Kamasu but if one was on the fence they are cheap enough to buy both.
I have always been a fan of Orient watches. I have a Mako 1 with the blue dial. I also have a Ray 2 with a black dial. I want a Kamasu with a red or green dial, I can't make up my mind. The Mako dial has allways been my favorite for legibility. I am very interested in the Mako 3. I would like to see the dial colors in person but for now my choice would be the grey/silver dial.
Great photography, and I found your introduction about Orient names interesting. There are still many great value watches, as you say, the Mako 3 or Kamasu would be as reliable, tough and comfortable as many much more expensive watches.
Yep. I felt the same about my ray 2. Easy enough fix.. buy a 22mm and 20mm oyster online.. make sure they are the same model, same brand. Use the 22mm endlink with the 20mm bracelet. 20mm band makes a huge upgrade to how the watch looks and feels. It's worth doing.
@@danpodina438 that’s a fair point but if you had seen the 40 mm Mako USA, you would see that the case was actually swallowed by the bracelet and I think it reduced its wrist presence.
I'm ok with 22, but sometimes i look in it on my wrist and have that feeling that "there's too much steel there". I may try multilink bracelets to see kf it changes the look.
I had a V1 with the twin crowns. Loved that watch and regret selling it. For me the pick of the current range is the Triton mini. A little bigger than the Kamasu and the Mako with a more serious tool watch design.
Why they insist in doing this so big ? Make it 39/40 mm and 20 lug to lug. Seiko has just done It with his Seiko 5 SKX style. It is the reason why I have not bougth a Kamatsu.
I like the size in my skinny 6,25" wrist, although it could use 20 lug width. I believe that Orient considers a smaller Kamasu in the future, hopefully with better prices than the smaller 5KX.
Somehow on this watch and the Ray and Mako USA series the size seems smaller on my wrist. I really don't notice the difference between it and my 40mm divers. In wearing my Christopher Ward Trident Proo 300 40mm today and looking at my wrist it seems no bigger than my Mako USA 2 white dial. Even though it is.
Great video as usual... Cheers! By the way, from a few real pics and videos I've seen of the 'white' dial Mako III variant, it's actually a champagne colour.
I liked my red Kamasu when I had one! It was one of the most legible watches I've had. I became annoyed with the disproportioned crown and eventually sold the watch. I'm surprised Orient hasn't corrected that yet.
Can you help me with the exact model number, please!? I still confused by the name of Mako III in this video 😅 As the sunburst diak with the digits I only see with the Mako II, but the II does not have sapphire, and the Mako IV has sapphire, number digits on the dial but no sun burst. Thanks in advance
I bought the gray one and I am kinda unhappy with it. For my use it is way to reflective, as you mentioned in your video. The readability is Soo bad. Maybe because of my poor eyesight. I keep finding myself dodging this watch all the time and wearing other ones :-/ that's sad, as I really like the design and the size
I really like this watch & typically gray is my favorite color tone, but the gold ruins it for me. I’m not a fan of the 1980s pimptastic gold. I’d go for the Blue or Cream dial versions, as neither has any gold accents. 👍🏻
Ugh. The crown is hard enough to use on the Kamasu. And you’re saying it’s even harder to use on tis new watch? They really need to make the crown bigger, or the crown guards smaller, or both!
Sorry to double post but I do remember Marc from Long Island Watch telling Tristano that Orient Watch is actually in a weird place in the Seiko Epson corporate umbrella where they are actually overseen by the printer division and they don’t get the same marketing and research and design budget as their big brother. I think that shows in their weird approach to proprietary websites and model names. It seems like someone needs to step in and re-organize things for them, so that they can capitalize on being the value for money diver and dress watch king.
I kinda like the challenges in name variants, regional marketing differences, model revisions, SKUs, maybe even some LEs. Adds some mystique and extra fanfare. Adds to the appeal and allure of the brand and series. This particular series is such a collectors piece especially with the confusing storyline. A connoisseur’s pleasure if you will. 🤌🏻 Imagine in 50 years looking back on this watches crazy history.
Orient puts second hand, bezel from Ray in Mako & it fits perfect!!!**) Mako&Ray - Classics now. Faaar classier than Kamasu, i guess. And faaar classier than tons of PRC mikrobranddivers. Colors are pretty attractive for me. Black, blue, orange exists looong time in previous TRUE Mako and Ray (1&2). Price...Mako 2 (without Mighty Sapphire and with short second hand))) was about 150. Now ...300!!! SRP, of course, but ...:)
Let’s face it orient are killing the entry level dive watch game right now.. so many colour choices.. perfect sizes.. ( I think citizen $hit the bed by upgrading the ny0040 to a 44mm case).. that sapphire grey mako is 👌
I am still waiting for the ivory dial's price to go down a lil bit. Here in Germany, it costs more than other 2 colour options. I think that ivory colour is simply superb and stunning. Plus I haven't had diver watch with that colour, and also, to give variety on my Orient diver watches. I have Red Kamasu and green Ray III (Kamasu II). So now, time for ivory Mako III. As for blue, I have had already too many diver watches from other brands with blue dial
Complicated story, I ended up with a Mako 3. It’s the Grey face. If I got the Burgundy face and black bezel I’d be more hyped about it. But it’s okay. I’ll just put some NATO Straps and use it for work. It’s classier than my G-shock🤷🏻♂️
It is really puzzling why Orient does not "move upscale" and adopt the features of the Mako USA II in all of their watches. Dont get me wrong, I am a huge Orient fan. The Mako II was my first mechanical watch and I have been hooked on mechanical watches ever since. I own a Mako II, a Ray II, two Kamasus and two Mako USA II models. As much as I like the others, the Mako USA models are in another class. The Mako USA models can hold their own with watches costing twice as much (or more). Why make anything else?? Or why not sell dive watches at several price tiers? These new models don't really offer me anything that I dont already love about the Orients that I own. Like you, I think that the red Kamasu on a Strapcode bracelet is pretty hard to top and is my "go to" watch.. I agree, the white Mako III is about the only one that I would consider.
I will admit to being a Seiko fanboy, and have the SKX007, 009, and the Samurai. I have yet to pull the trigger on an Orient, and I'm not sure why. If I had to pinpoint a reason, perhaps odd case sizes and lug widths, particularly on the Bambinos. That said, this grey dial looks spectacular and might be the one that hooks me.
As far as the naming goes it really should come from the manufacturer. Its weird how you can move up through the levels in collecting yet i sill see the strong value for money in these pieces.
Im really hesitant on buying after market bracelets. More times then not they arent long enough and i dont think i should pay more for extra links. I like the newedt mako and may look into either the white or silver dial.
Yeah, this one might end up being called the "baby triton XL version 1.26" On a serious note, i'm with ya, this should be called the Mako 3, and the upgraded ray(the round indices) should have been called the Ray 3, not the kamasu 2. it makes no sense, it's not some upgrade over the kamasu in any way.
Orient needs to make a GMT on one of their cheaper watches like the Mako to match and even better the Seiko 5 GMT as it would have a sapphire crystal and not the hardlex that Seiko uses and didn't didn't get the buyers memo saying that we all hate the hardlex and it's now 2023 so stop with the Hardlex.I have a Kamasu Blue on the black rubber strap and the only thing missing is an ARC on the inside of the crysal .How fantasitc would it be if Orient made a GMT out of the Mako 3 and have a sapphire crystal with anti reflective coating.Great review you explain things so well but others try to convince people they are an expert.
Thanks! That would be really cool... Since they are connected they should just use the new Seiko NH34, but I'm not sure if they would. I wonder how hard it would be to mod a Kamasu with one.
@@RelativeTime I like looking at mods but they are not for me.I think like a car a watch should come the best it can and don't modify it.If you do then there is no reason for the company too make it better
Just learn the international model code for current Orient models and then trace the lineage with the *base* model numbers, it's not that hard. And yes, AA08 is not Kamasu, like, at all. Kamasu and Kanno belong to AA00 base model. Speaking of this one (RA-AA0819N?), the sunburst effect on the dial is cool but I think it's a bit less functional than RA-AA0001B because the minute hand doesn't fully reach the markers and the bezel isn't fully marked either. I wouldn't mind the bracelet at all as I usually swap them to NATO or steel mesh straps on day one, unless we're talking titanium. By the way, with this hand length and color scheme, the RA-AA0819N just begs to be made out of titanium *and* a few mm smaller in diameter (the F6922 will fit in there anyway) so that the minute hand would reach the markers and the day/date window would be closer to the edge. I'd buy such a Mako immediately if they made one.
The Kamasu is indeed the best main stream brand entry diver, but it's a shame Orient are so reluctant to make smaller watches. However, compare it to a microbrand and look at the difference. I look at my Phoibos Voyager 3, which is about the same price, but better in about every way
Hard to say without seeing it. If it was a fitted bracelet so you didn't see any gaps in the end links, I think it would look okay. But if a normal straight and link I think the silver and black clashed too much

Also, I believe the crown is different on this watch (it definitely potrudes more and has a different teeth pattern to it) than on the Kamasu
Mako=shark(Look at the back case), Ray = Stingray(Look at the whole case shape), Kamasu = Japanese Barracuda (Look at the minute hand's shape)
I'm so confused what do we call it? Please help lol
yeah, Orient USA is doing a great branding job for Orient globally. We know Orients as Makos, Reys, Bambinos etc not the references

The 12 6 9 dial with sword hands is classic military spec diver.

That would be nice.

Definitely the best Mako yet.😀
I bought the gray one and I am kinda unhappy with it. For my use it is way to reflective, as you mentioned in your video. The readability is Soo bad. Maybe because of my poor eyesight. I keep finding myself dodging this watch all the time and wearing other ones :-/ that's sad, as I really like the design and the size
I needed to add that champagne dial to my collection....it kinda jumped off the screen at me!
Dial layout Gives me a bit of a Longine Hydroconquest look to it
I really like this watch & typically gray is my favorite color tone, but the gold ruins it for me. I’m not a fan of the 1980s pimptastic gold. I’d go for the Blue or Cream dial versions, as neither has any gold accents. 👍🏻
That orange fume dial is fire
I own the Ray llc. Love it. Looking forward to buying this one
( I think citizen $hit the bed by upgrading the ny0040 to a 44mm case).. that sapphire grey mako is 👌
Agreed... no idea why Citizen went bigger.
There is also a new 40mm diver coming from Orient. Not sure of the name yet. I think Orient Japan is just calling it the 40mm Mako.
Complicated story, I ended up with a Mako 3. It’s the Grey face. If I got the Burgundy face and black bezel I’d be more hyped about it. But it’s okay. I’ll just put some NATO Straps and use it for work. It’s classier than my G-shock🤷🏻♂️
I just got the same color. Upgraded the bracelet pretty easily too
It is really puzzling why Orient does not "move upscale" and adopt the features of the Mako USA II in all of their watches. I agree, the white Mako III is about the only one that I would consider.
also a killer midrange by innova
I will admit to being a Seiko fanboy, and have the SKX007, 009, and the Samurai. I have yet to pull the trigger on an Orient, and I'm not sure why. If I had to pinpoint a reason, perhaps odd case sizes and lug widths, particularly on the Bambinos. That said, this grey dial looks spectacular and might be the one that hooks me.
The bambino lug width still confuses me. No idea why they went that way.
To be more specific the red kamasu I associate with your channel 😀
Great video
Bracelet is perfect 👍
A Ti Mako would be great!
The Kamasu is indeed the best main stream brand entry diver, but it's a shame Orient are so reluctant to make smaller watches. However, compare it to a microbrand and look at the difference. I look at my Phoibos Voyager 3, which is about the same price, but better in about every way
Do you think this would look good on a black, stainless steel bracelet?
Hard to say without seeing it. If it was a fitted bracelet so you didn't see any gaps in the end links, I think it would look okay.
But if a normal straight and link I think the silver and black clashed too much
Have they sorted out the crown on this compared to my kamasu Teal green dial as mine is small and hard to get the thread to catch to re screw in
I like Hawaiian pizza and sharp, yet whimsical dials.
Love Oris. Great quality

Opps, you are right. I copied the card off an older video and forgot to change that part. Thanks for pointing it out.
Would you call that "Day-Date" complication 'double action' or 'Triple'?
Thanks again for this Video
No problem. Thanks for watching!
