  • This is the recording of a webinar I did for Camera Bits, makers of Photo Mechanic. In this video I demonstrate some of the advanced techniques I employ in my workflow as a commercial sports photographer. I give an overview of how I use Code Replacements and Hot Codes, plus a couple other tidbits. This webinar is intended to provide a taste of what Photo Mechanic can do. I teach this in-depth in my workshops. See www.jeffvoganphotography.com/...

    You are the GOAT with PM! Seriously advanced stuff here. Much more advanced than I currently need, but saving this for when I have a future big/medium shoot and I want to save post production time!

      Kind of you to say. These techniques can be very helpful in more than the few examples I showed during the webinar. Once you understand the power of it, you'll find plenty of other opportunities to take advantage of it.

    Just getting into Photo Mechanic because I started shooting motorsport, and quickly realised Lightroom wasn't gonna cut it. But damn, this is way over what I thought was possible, this is awesome! Here I was thinking I was slick preparing keywords on a Stream Deack 😅

      I have seen some interesting use of a Stream Deck used along with Photo Mechanic. It was used by an NHL hockey team to program buttons that acted as a Code Replacement. Pretty slick use however that is a pretty specific use that would not work well in many other scenarios. Photo Mechanic can be set up to do some pretty sophisticated tasks to make the workflow faster.

      @@jeffvoganphotography The idea for the Stream Deck came from an F1 photographer - but he only has the F1 drivers to worry about. The hillclimb series I started shooting has some 60+ drivers on any given event, and the entries vary wildly from one round to the next, it's always a pain to keyword anyway. But with Photo Mechanic it's way easier!

    Hello Jeff. Great video, impressive work, and the {foldernum} workflow is very sophisticated, congratulations! It seems to work with a card reader at first glance, doesn't it? However, at certain events like triathlons, I transmit directly from cameras on helicopters, motorcycles, the finish area, etc., to an FTP server (Live Ingest). It appears that the quick folder switch in the camera doesn't have an impact because {foldernum} is not part of the EXIF information...

      The workflow that I demonstrated is not appropriate for situations where you are photographing multiple subjects at once, like triathlon, football, hockey, etc. you lose the folder information when you FTP or live ingest. Such events would utilize a different workflow than I demonstrated.

      I gave some thought to your requirement but haven't tested it. You could write the folder number to an unused ITPC field, then when you transmit the images to an FTP server, you could set PM to live ingest from that FTP folder and apply the Hot Codes against the foldernum variable in that otherwise unused ITPC field. That would be worth testing out.

    Looking forward to review of new release. I don’t see much difference at 1st look… other than new annual subscription. Thanks

      I am not sure what you mean. Camera Bits announced a new subscription model. It is not a new release. If and when you receive updates/new releases will be dependent on when you bought your perpetual license or when you subscribed. Perpetual license holders will receive feature updates for a year after purchase.

    When you send these off to an editor do you have to do something to isolate the jpeg or does PM default to sending jpeg only?

    • @jeffvoganphotography
      @jeffvoganphotography  6 місяців тому +1

      If you look at the transmit area of uploader window, you will see Saved as jpg or Original Photos/Videos. To send as jpeg, select the Saved as jpg option. It’s that easy.

    Hi, I understand that i can not use "Hot Folders" base on folders in my camera when i using Live Ingest (tethering) in PM?

    • @jeffvoganphotography
      @jeffvoganphotography  8 місяців тому +1

      If I understand your question, I don't believe so. If you are tethering, most tethering software stores the images on the computer, bypassing the memory card. So the use of Hot Codes based on the storage folder would not work. Some tethering software allows for the images to be stored simultaneously on the memory card and the computer, but I have yet to find software that will also let me change storage folders on the memory card while tethering.

      i found out i can stor on card and send to Capture One AND still change what folder i can save my photos in Nikon D5 :-) This open up some new possibilities when i shoot tether and i can let the customers see the photos live @@jeffvoganphotography

    Great video. If only Sony cameras would allow the creation of user defined folder names, and not auto assign seemingly random groups of numbers.

    • @jeffvoganphotography
      @jeffvoganphotography  8 місяців тому +1

      Sony sent me a pair of cameras to test and document my workflow on their gear. Sony cameras allow you to change storage folder numbers. The only restriction is that the storage folder numbers are created incrementally. The storage folder numbers, when I tested the cameras, were not random. They were sequential.
