About JamesandKarla:
Hey everyone! We are husband-and-wife architectural/interior photographers based in NYC. We started our video channel to act an artistic intervention to help raise awareness of the importance of small independently-owned businesses and the unique character these shops add to the streets and neighborhoods of New York City.
In our videos we will showcase portraits of storefronts and shop owners in New York City & beyond and capture moments of city life that capture the spirit, energy and cultural diversity of individual neighborhoods. We also bring our dog, Hudson along whenever we can.
We made it our mission to thoroughly document unique 'mom-and-pop' stores when we began to notice the alarming rate at which they were disappearing. Our critically acclaimed books include “STORE FRONT: The Disappearing Face of New York”, “New York Nights”, “STORE FRONT II- A History Preserved” and “Broken Windows-Graffiti NYC”.

I watched a movie called Carmine Street Guitars that’s still on TV here on and off. The guy that runs it designed all of Lou Reed’s guitars. I’m unsure where in the city Carmine Street is though.
Ritean that is very cool. Carmine Street is in the West Village just off 6th Avenue. In a recent Greenwich village livestream we visited Joe’s Pizza on Carmine Street and got a slice for Hudson. The guitar shop is just down the street.
NYC is rich with guitar history! This was a great a place I never knew about, thank you! Go to Chelsea Guitars for more history.
Yes NYC sure is rich in guitar history. Dan at Chelsea Guitars told us lots of great history & stories too as well as Matt from the sadly now closed Matt Umanov Guitars.

Amazing place, amazing guitar collection! It´s such a shame I can´t play any instrument at all. Being a music buff as I am, this is one of my biggest frustrations.
I´d love to stop by Rivington Guitars someday and hear these amazing stories...perhaps the magic of the store blows away my inability to perform!

Oh yes Christian there are so many gems in our neighborhood of the East Village because so many of the storefronts are smaller in size which thankfully lends itself to being rented by a small independently owned business. We feel lucky to have such a great selection of places to browse and shop at. You certainly would love visiting Rivington Guitars and speaking with the owner as he is to knowledgeable. If you want to make money at guitar, learn how to repair them.
I’ve heard countless musicians, studio or main acts from the ‘60’s and ‘70’s, talk about “Manny’s! Gotta go to Manny’s and get this or that Telecaster” or whatever. I spent a lot of time working in Manhattan post 9-11, got to see a lot of stuff on my downtime, but never hit the guitar shops. Wish I had.
