Scary Monsters is the greatest album ever made. It's just the perfect mix of totally diverse influences - funk, experimental, pop, punk. It's almost too much but it stays just on the right side of overload.

Adding a Harmonizer on the snare drum, to make it "spit" during the ending motif was an act of pure genius from Tony Visconti! He wasn't afraid to try anything! His engineer at the time, Colin Thurston, used the same technique on the 2nd Magazine album, "Secondhand Daylight."

    The vacuum created
    by the arrival of freedom
And the possibilities it seems to offer
It's got nothing to do with you,
    if one can grasp it
It's got nothing to do with you,
    if one can grasp it
A series of shocks - sneakers fall apart
    Earth keeps on rolling

It's got nothing to do with you,

    • @robtyman4281
      @robtyman4281 10 місяців тому +1

@@bodylan11 ...the lyrics are actually in reference to his recent divorce from Angie Bowie at that time (1979/80), and the freedom he felt again as a result: "by the arrival of freedom, and the possibilities it seems to offer". Then he takes a dig at her: " it's got nothing to do with you, if one can grasp it".
Then later in the song, he mentions his financial situation: "...legally crippled"; which kind of necessitates him to write more commercial hits in the future (hint: Let's Dance).
So in actual fact this song was telling us what was to come (in terms of his songs). The realisation dawned on him that in order to have more money, he needed to change direction, and become more commercial... as his divorce had drained him of it (money).
Bet you never knew that this song was about that! ...and neither did most people back then. Well you do now!

Scary Monsters album is littered with these wonderful concepts throughout, in no small part thanks to Fripp's guitar solos. But often the songs don't take you to that end point you wanted to go. It leaves me feeling a little unsatisfied. Not necessarily in a bad way, because I like how this song carries an expected beat and then an appropriate child-like sing-along in the chorus, but then rather than just fade out we get a minute's worth of guitar wrestling that could well lead to another song entirely and even right to the end there is this kinda funk sound making its way before anything takes off. I'd say that many of the songs are kinda anti-pop pop songs.

Scary Monsters was my first Bowie album. It is as close to a perfect album as it is possible to get in my opinion. Even the weakest tracks are brilliant, and tracks like Scary Monsters, Ashes to Ashes, and Teenage Wildlife are among my top ten Bowie songs ever. Bowie made at least 10 classic albums, but this is the pinnacle although considering the circumtances it was made under, Blackstar may be even more impressive.

I always thought this was mockery of how rich elitist live and think. And making money and getting outta poverty is like going up a hill backwards. Idk could be totally wrong.

THE VACUUM CREATED BY THE ARRIVAL OF FREEDOM
AND THE POSSIBILITIES IT SEEMS TO OFFER
while they sleep, we go to work, we're legally crippled, it's the death of love
it's got nothing to do with you, if one can grasp it......
best lyrics he ever wrote in my opinion

Its basically a folk/pop song that turns into post punk, high art rock epic. The lyrics seems to be addressing fate and being in God's hands, 'its got nothing to do with you' but keep struggling; its asking you to let go. The jewel is Robert Fripp's outro, so atonal and rough, which just gets more abrasive as the song ends. Its unparalleled and typically Bowie, its a masterpiece.

The vacuum created by the arrival of freedom
And the possibilities it seems to offer
It's got nothing to do with you, if one can grasp it
It's got nothing to do with you, if one can grasp it
A series of shocks - sneakers fall apart
Earth keeps on rolling - witnesses falling
It's got nothing to do with you, if one can grasp it
It's got nothing to do with you, if one can grasp it
Yeah, yeah, yeah - up the hill backwards
    It'll be alright, ooh
While we sleep they go to work
We're legally crippled it's the death of love
It's got nothing to do with you, if one can grasp it
It's got nothing to do with you, if one can grasp it
    More idols then realities, ooh
    I'm OK, you're so-so, ooh
Yeah, yeah, yeah - up the hill backwards
    It'll be alright ooh
