I wish I could remember what channel I saw this on... instead of canning a dedicated run of water, fill in the empty spaces when canning other items with a jar of water. When I can meat or beans, there is usually an empty space in my canner because the package size only gives me 6 full quarts and I don't want to open another package. So I put a quart of water in to fill the canner to capacity. Thank you, Toni, for all you do to help so many people. Bright Blessings.

Our farm is next to a water shed, as a result, I have two fresh water springs, both tapped to fill ponds. In the 1950’s it was popular to fill ponds near road ways for fire trucks to pump. I think the previous owner got paid to construct one, the other was meant for cattle and horses, it’s in the middle of a field. The springs still run in the dead of winter, often having green grass around them as the water temp is a constant 52F. I tell folks they can fill up their water jugs anytime, it’s good water we had it tested. I re-fill water bottles to save on buying water bottles. We have a house filter for sediment, but our water is pure and has minerals. We are fortunate to buy a farm that was never near coal mining once upon a time! But when things get covered with snow and ice, being at the end of the power lines sucks, our power goes off often and we don’t have a 220 generator to pump our well. And during August, when there is little rain, our well sometimes runs dry and it turns the water orange...yuck. We keep non-potable water in jugs, to wash with and flush the toilet, but to drink? I think your idea of pressure canning water is a very good idea! Instant fresh drinking water, perfect! 😃

I've been canning water since 2017. If I have a few jars of veggies or meat to can, I will fill the rest of the canner with quarts of water. I also use gallon jars too. Nice to have on hand.

Very clever! I would have never thought of that, but in an SHTF medical emergency, sterile water would be priceless. At the very least, you have potable water for drinking.

Love you Toni, but even I wondered if you had finally snapped, until thought of it's uses and how to take process to normal Saline. Cindy took it next level to sterile cloth, a great
    idea I thought.

If you have stacks of empty jars they may as well contain water. I haven't pressure canned water but I do boil water and reuse my lids for water storage. It's safe to eat, drink ,cook with etc. It is not sterile. By doing this I have water storage but am not wasting a lid so when I need to fill a jar with food there is no pain in dumping the water out to use a jar.

  • @maidenminnesota1

Never thought to do something like this. Beats having to boil contaminated water and hope it's decontaminated enough in a "boil water" emergency. Brilliant!

There's just me and my husband so I don't can a huge amount of jars at once. To fill the void in the pressure canner I put water in jars to take up the space. You are so right, sterilized water may come in handy for all kind of things.

Every time I have 7 empty quarts I pressure can water. I do the same with my 1/2 gallon jars- like you I can only get four 1/2 gallon jars in the canner. This does two things, it truly sterilizes the interior of my jars and it gives me clean sterilized water for use if we have a power outage (we have a well). It keeps all of my jars in use and when it comes time when I need the jars I empty the water, and I have jars to use.

Good for you Toni! Luckily we have no issues and live close to one of the purest water sources in Ontario if need be. We currently use our Berkey for canning, cooking, drinking and brushing our teeth. I suppose if you lived in a city condo or apartment on a higher floor
and there was an emergency, it would be difficult to haul and filter for more than a day or two. Any time I don't have a full load I always can water and store. Presto was kind enough to gift me a jiggler when I went to order that along with another rack. When speaking with the customer service rep.,( who had the virus, and sounded awful) I told her that when the Lockdowns were on I missed my eye injections and trouble reading my gauge as a result of further deterioration. What a nice surprise. Now I can listen instead of trying to focus on that gauge! I must ask Toni - have you ever tried/planted black garlic? Its available at a supplier near Stouffville in 2 weeks but I know nothing about it. Thanks. Take care.

I wish that I had more jars left. There is no reason to have empty jars when they could be canned with water reusing old lids. If you need the jars later for something better you pour it out. You could also once open pour water in a clean used water bottle, though it would no longer be sterilized it would become unbreakable. Perfect for times when there are boil water alerts.

Two words, ... "Storage space", as in, .. it's full!
I was "caught" canning up another "something" I can't remember what now, and what was said was this, "Where will you put it!" and it wasn't a question, it was an accusation.
I ignore such things as such things deserve ignoring.
It's better to say nothing and be though of as an idiot, then to say something and prove it's true.
I've been using the same mason jars of water as filler for some time now. There's no way it's not sterile.
    OK, Have a great one.

I have several quarts of water canned up too. I started doing it to test used jars that I acquired at yard sales or some we found in an old shed. I used my tattler lids since they are reusable and I am not wasting a regular lid on testing jars. I dumped out a couple and then realized - why? Why not just leave the water in them until I need the jars and that way I have sterile water - shelf stable and ready to drink if I need it in an emergency.

Your water, not matter how long you have it, will never taste like plastic. I hate getting the odd old bottle of water and having it taste like plastic smells 😠 nothing beats glass as a food storage container. You can find a 100 year old bottle, clean it well, and it will be fine for use.

Hi Tony, I'm not sure what that is accomplishing, if it's city water like in the US, the chlorine in it should have it sterilized already, but you'll probably still have the chlorine, fluoride, and all the other nasties they put in it. I would simply distill it. That's just my two cents worth.

Sterile water for emergencies, like wound treatment or if it's needed for other health conditions, or, as we've had a few in the US, in case of a "boil water emergency", like if a treatment plant fails or there's a chemical spill that pollutes the water supply.

I have a canning book from the 40's put out by Kerr, they have a temperature and time table for every type of food. It lists oven, water, and pressure canning times.
So I don't get why there is now this stigma to use and oven or water bath to can. An oven can get temps up to 250 degrees same as a pressure canner does easily and it's all about giving enough time to heat all the way through the can. The times for oven and water bath were much longer than a pressure canner is all.
